NFT: Garden Season Debrief

pjcas18 : 10/27/2014 9:41 pm
just pulled up the plants this weekend from my first garden in the new house, generally positive, lots of bonding witht he kids and some good production, still had tons of grape tomatoes - felt bad, but I planted too many of them and you can only eat so many.

Anyway, the things I had problems with were:

1. spaghetti squash - flowers all summer, no fruit. what's up with that?

2. watermelon - took over the whole garden, and the watermelons were the size of bowling balls - but how do you know when they're ripe? the first 5 I checked were not, finally got a lot of them, but it was like late september and we planted them memorial day (I didn't even expect them to grow, so I was surprised), but just in general how do you test for ripeness?

3. eggplant - the best thing from a eating standpoint for my family - but I didn't get that many. I bought some fairytale egplant too because the garden center I went to only had one traditional eggplant plant, and the fairytale produced tons, but no one liked them except when I grilled them. But only a few traditional eggplant.

so, any suggestions or tips I need to do to winterize?

any thoughts about the issues (lots of positive, but I wanted some advice on the bad).
