MookGiants : 10/28/2014 6:28 pm : link
and vehicle damage, they don't believe anyone was hurt.

That was crazy to watch live. Praying no one is hurt.
Pretty wild seeing that live

Hearing that nobody was in the vicinity. Probably a few hundred million (if not billion) going *poof* before our eyes...
OK probably not billion
regulator : 10/28/2014 6:29 pm : link
but a huge sum nonetheless...

mrvax : 10/28/2014 6:43 pm : link
they had a Space Shuttle launch from Florida that was circumpolar and could be seen along the east coast? Thought it was amazing.
it happens..

It's rare for a single malfunction ends up cascading into a catastrophic failure. It's a testament to the professionalism and dedication of the NASA teams of engineers that these misfires happen so infrequently.

I'm glad nobody was injured.
Not a $ 1 billion.
Crispino : 10/28/2014 7:12 pm : link
$2 billion.
I watched that live

And was about to run outside to see if I could see it from my southern view on river road in edgewater. As I'm opening the door the thing blew up. Crazy...
I think it was a commercial rocket ….

Contracted to serve NASA needs. I'm guessing these firms have their own engineers).

It was an Orbital Sciences

rocket, not NASA.
Space Shuttle

was never circumpolar (the launches planned for Vandenberg AFB in California were supposed to be, but were cancelled after Challenger).

57 degree inclination was the highest inclination the Shuttle flew (at least the highest advertized). Some of the post Challenger classified Shuttle missions were rumored to be higher inclination.
Kal-El is home!

It was billed that way and I could see the shuttle from Long Island a few minutes after launch.

Once I moved to Orlando, I got quite a few good looks at it.
You don't get to literally watch your tax $ go up in smoke every day
