It's rare for a single malfunction ends up cascading into a catastrophic failure. It's a testament to the professionalism and dedication of the NASA teams of engineers that these misfires happen so infrequently.
And was about to run outside to see if I could see it from my southern view on river road in edgewater. As I'm opening the door the thing blew up. Crazy...
was never circumpolar (the launches planned for Vandenberg AFB in California were supposed to be, but were cancelled after Challenger).
57 degree inclination was the highest inclination the Shuttle flew (at least the highest advertized). Some of the post Challenger classified Shuttle missions were rumored to be higher inclination.

It was billed that way and I could see the shuttle from Long Island a few minutes after launch.
Once I moved to Orlando, I got quite a few good looks at it.
