Kelvin Benjamin claims he purposefully tanked the 40...

Mike in St. Louis : 10/29/2014 9:41 am
at the combine because he wanted to play for the Panthers...

if true, that's not too bright...probably cost him some money and there's no guarantee the Panthers wouldn't pass on him too...

"Thirty-five wide receivers had a faster 40-yard dash time than Kelvin Benjamin 4.61 seconds at this year’s NFL combine, but the former Florida State wide standout wasn’t surprised.

He purposely ran slowly.

“Because I wanted to play for the Carolina Panthers,’’ said Benjamin, noting he has been clocked at 4.41 seconds, which would have been fifth fastest at the combine."

claims?

or said jokingly?

I'll go with the latter.
No way he tanked on purpose

Just an excuse as to why he put up shitty combine numbers. Like you said, he cost himself a ton of dough with that crappy 40 time. If he would have ran a 4.41 as he states, he would have been definitely drafted higher.

One does have to ponder, if he put up that type of 40 time if the Giants would have chosen him over OBJ.
Not if he proved

To them in a private workout he could run faster
I know nothing about this story

but if I had to guess, I would say Yaj nailed it
Even if he did tank it,
mac attack : 10/29/2014 10:06 am : link
who cares? It's his own career. There is nothing that states you MUST run your fastest at these combine events.

He's obviously not a smart guy tho. Who's to say a team in the top half of the draft doesnt trade back or trade back into the 1st round to snag him before the Panthers?
So here is his supposed plan:
Patrick77 : 10/29/2014 10:07 am : link
1. Fail at running the 40
2. Go down draft boards
3. Get drafted lower than actual play and talent would dictate
4. Get drafted by and play for Carolina and be paid a lower amount
5. Profit

Seems like a great strategy...

BS, IMO.
I guess the drops he had at Florida St.
sjnyfan : 10/29/2014 10:42 am : link
were part of his long term plan then too.
if the panthers were

complicit in that decision, and there's any truth to it, the league should fine them heavily and take away multiple picks.
and if he was serious
Sir-Yes-Sir : 10/29/2014 11:05 am : link
(who knows) yeah it cost him some money, but honestly if I thought one team gave me the best chance to succeed for whatever reason (team mates, coaches, roster, whatever) it wouldn't be that crazy to maneuver to get there.
see, i told you guys
SHO'NUFF : 10/29/2014 11:39 am : link
we coulda had Martin and Benjamin.
if you've actually seen him play
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 10/29/2014 1:02 pm : link
you know this is BS.

He's just not that fast or quick, he rarely creates any separation from corners. But he's just an enormous human being so he's a "always open". Talented player who clearly isn't a bust. But I don't think he's ever going to be an All Pro.

Was it at least higher than Vince Young's?
