The humanity of Gus' personality played an integral role in his development, especially the very deep relationship with Max, which was interpreted by some viewers – and even Esposito himself – as possibly homosexual. The loss of Max is partially what turned Gus into a ruthless villain, who is not above anything when it comes to avenging Max's death, including the murder of children and the gradual killing of Hector Salamanca's entire family. However, the loss of Max is also what cultivated Gus' desire to create a new "family" by empowering his illicit meth empire, as well as the chicken restaurants. Gilligan has stated that he decided against the show officially confirming or denying whether or not Max and Gus were, in fact, lovers; however, he also said that they "probably were lovers."
I totally missed that. His sexuality just didnt strike me as relevant to his character in the story.
Is not really relevant to the character I suppose - just something I noticed a interesting. He's got no other interests other than business it appears.
Though he does mention "the kids" when he's cooking dinner for Walt at his house.
Better Call Saul, the whole Chile backstory is something Vince G always wanted to dive more into.
I think it is safe to say that the death of his partner was something he took extremely personally which is why he was hell bent on revenge because the man was also his lover.
what a cast. I enjoyed a 62 show binge earlier this year after being encouraged to see it from my sons. I will re-watch in the near future. I think Gus was depicted as gay in the show but he was also depicted as cautious, dangerous, and calculating. Great character.
I figured it was his lover or something. The crying, and decades long waiting for one by one revenge on all of them pretty much told you that was more than just some random friend. And if I remember correctly they were not related. So it wasn't his brother either.
When did Gus ever murder Children? I don't remember that at all. I know the street dealers killed Jesse's girls little Brother, but I don't remember Gus having anything to do with it.
This makes me want to watch the series for a 3rd time. Â
like the Sopranos ....2 shows you never wanted to end. Breaking Bad was absolutely amazing with the acting, story lines, characters, etc. A great series
for Better Call Saul....show how he made his bones etc. I liked his character alot. Think they should have introduced him earlier in the series though.
He was bad ass in that episode where he has the silencer and cleans through that one house was amazing.
They could have a whole new " (Bryan Cranston) " type character in Better Call Saul. They could just make him a more dealer type then family man turned dealer. Could go in a hundred different directions. Im sure there was plenty of 'Walt'types before Gus got around to dealing with the real Walt. I hope they do it very good and dont ruin the whole Breaking Bad series. It deserves the best.

The street dealers worked for Gus, so by extension, he is responsible. And when you consider how controlling Gus is and how much attention he pays to every little detail and how all his underlings are carefully vetted before becoming part of the team; you have to assume that the street dealers would not have killed the kid if they didn't consider it standard operating procedure as defined and dictated by Gus.

I thought Breaking Bad ended at the right time - I had a tough time seeing another full season of action. I did think they could have added a couple of more episodes and wrap up a few story lines, but an entire season would have bordered on too much.

The final episode was rushed. Everything was so easy for Walt. No real cleverness involved in any of it. Contrast that with the final two episodes of Season 4, where Walt had to use every ounce of his ingenuity and then some to outfox Gus.
and split in half. Derailed the pacing, added in too much fluff in the first 8 episodes, then rushed the final few episodes.
I really wish AMC didn't strongarm Gilligan. I would have loved a crisp final season. Still great TV, but it was one of the weaker seasons for the show.
Milton/UConn - I agree with both of you. The last three episodes felt unnecessarily rushed. It's my favorite show of all time, but there were a few things that bothered me towards the end.
The idea of Gus being gay never even occurred to me Â
I have to watch the season's involving Gus all over again. This opens a whole other realm of possible interpretation.
"Hermanos" was the name of an episode...I believe the one in which Gus' partner was murdered in front of him. Now I have to think of Hermanos as being in "quotation marks." Like, in the hyper macho culture of the Cartels, homosexual lovers would euphemize themselves as "Brothers," the meaning of "Hermanos."
"Brothers Chicken" -- gotta think about that.
Also makes you want to look at whether those two brothers that Hector raised (were they even his sons? Weren't they cousins???) were also made to have sex with each other. Hector forced them to physically torture each other. Why wouldn't a psychopath introduce sex into the picture.
They were also immaculately dressed, which is indeed a stereotype, but since when has Hollywood dispensed with stereotypes as a way of telegraphing sexuality or gender roles?
I won't mind having to spend time with Giancarlo Esposito. I frickin LOVE THAT GUY!!!
Gus was a fascinating character, and I hope he will be returning in "Better Call Saul," which as we know is a layered title, as Saul is actually probably named Liam or Shamus.
But I think it was more than likely that Gus and his chemist friend from back in the day were lovers.

I thought they were related somehow. Cousins or something?

Because none are messy?

Would love to see more of Mike, too.
