My guesses
rich in DC : 10/30/2014 8:43 am : link
3B will be Prado.

2B will be Refsynder.

SS will be gained in a trade- maybe Casto (Cubs)?

SP will be CC, Pineda, Tanaka, Greene, and either Phelps or a low upside vet who eats time and innings until one of the minor league arms is ready.

My guess is that ARod gets to spring training and simply does not have anything anymore, leading the Yanks to release him just before the season starts (yes, that means they will pay him $61M for nothing- but they just finished paying him much more than that for three years of nothing before that).

If they're going to sign someone old...
Dunedin81 : 10/30/2014 8:57 am : link
for fuck's sake make it Victor Martinez.

I'd rather they not sign Sandoval but his swing at YS would be impressive. Still he will be overpaid because of the WS and I would hope they aren't the ones to overpay him.
I'm not too optimistic, so here's mine.

Our Opening Day starting 3B will be A-Rod (double sob).

A-Rod will have 250 ABs and play most of his games at DH.

SS - Asdrubal Cabrera
3B - Prado
ARod - 250 ABs, majority at DH
rotation: Tanaka, Pineda, Greene, Phelps and McCarthy.

Can't see Sandoval here. Headley is serviceable enough, if they re-sign and Prado is viable too.

Do not want Shields in any way shape or form.

I guess CC will be there in camp, but I think he is cooked. Sadly he went down hill quickly.

I really don't like Headley

He's going to get way too much for a third baseman who isn't much of a hitter.

Yeah, true he didn't show much as a hitter. I don't kow if ARod can hit anymore either after two years of being out.

I also don't expect anything from Teixeira either. Guess they can play Teix and ARod at 1st - that way they can alternately be on the DL.

I don't have any predictions for the Yankees lineup or rotation
MadPlaid : 10/30/2014 10:23 am : link
What about Ivan Nova? When do you think will be the earliest he can rejoin the Yankees?

Also, I'm hoping they bring back Robertson. A solid home grown closer is a nice thing to have in my opinion.
I'd be open to Tulo at SS

whoops. shoulda refreshed before I commented.

No worries
MadPlaid : 10/30/2014 10:37 am : link
Nova had the surgery early last year, unfortunately for him, but may be fortunate for us. Does the recovery allow for a pitcher to come back to the team within a year? Or, does he rejoin the team mid-year if at all?
He was throwing in September
BeerFridge : 10/30/2014 10:38 am : link
He should be available pretty early.

+1 to this lineup, but I do think they sign another FA pitcher besides McCarthy especially with Tanaka's elbow a concern going forward. A guy like Liriano if they don't go all in for Scherzer or Lester.

I hadn't heard that. Good to know. I was really optimistic for him last year. I really thought he was going to be very good. Dang injuries.
last I read about Nova....
Greg from LI : 10/30/2014 10:46 am : link
He had started some light throwing. Rothschild has said that they are going to tread very carefully with him and let him rehab at his own pace. Maybe he'll be back around the All-Star break.

Rooting like hell for him, because in many ways he's one of us. When he was a kid in the Domincan, the first team to scout him and offer him a contract was Boston. He refused, because he and his father were Yankees fans and that's who he wanted to play for. Gotta love it.

Yeah, it's still 12-18 months. Opening day is prob not possible but I would have to think June is a reasonable guess without setbacks.
Now what about Tanaka?
section125 : 10/30/2014 10:48 am : link
He made a couple starts in September. Is he considered "healthy"?
Tanaka has me nervous
MadPlaid : 10/30/2014 10:55 am : link
Yeah, he made it through the season without having to have the TJ surgery. But, will rest be enough for the long haul? I'm worried that his best pitch, the sinker, is going to be the end of him.
Tanaka's just going to be a wait and see thing, unfortunately
Greg from LI : 10/30/2014 10:57 am : link
He's healthy until he isn't.
Yeah, a partially torn tendon.
section125 : 10/30/2014 11:00 am : link
I'll presume Dr. Andrews has a workout regimen for strengthening that tendon.
Yanks are going to have to address their catching situation...

Was also told it "does not appear" that Austin Romine will get a fourth option, so he will be out of options next season. #yankees

One or two of Murphy, Romine and Cervelli will need to be moved, and Sanchez could go too with Luis Torrens set to hit full-season ball next year.
Romine is not a MLB catcher
mac attack : 10/30/2014 11:10 am : link
Just keep Cervelli as the backup and wait until Sanchez is ready. I wouldnt mind signing Russell Martin either.
Romine is a serviceable backup...
Dunedin81 : 10/30/2014 11:12 am : link
nothing more, probably not less.
I'm hoping they pass on any big FAs
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 10/30/2014 11:12 am : link
I could understand Asdrubal, a middle of the rotation SP, and some infield depth but this team needs to realize that it is essentially in purgatory and will need to be smart and patient about it or else they'll be stuck in there for a lot longer.
I really want Lester
CruzShip52 : 10/30/2014 11:14 am : link
Ive always liked him, he was one of my fav players in the league on a non yankees team

Tanaka
Lester
Pineda
CC
Greene/Phelps/Nova (when he comes back)

I would enjoy watching every single game with that rotation
They really need an outfielder with pop
Greg from LI : 10/30/2014 11:14 am : link
But there's no one particualrly appealing on the market, and prices are ludicrous.

That Ellsbury deal was such a damned mistake.

Nelson Cruz looks likely to resign with the O's and Markakis is nothing special. So yeah, not likely.

Melky has pop, don't know if it's legal, but he will want to play full time.
Sign Hanley Ramirez for right handed pop.
If Hanley was a shortstop...
Dunedin81 : 10/30/2014 11:30 am : link
it might make sense. If he hadn't missed significant time in 3/4 years he would be in line for a massive payday. But his 50 SB speed is all but gone and you have no idea if he's a 30+ HR guy at this point, so you're paying for uncertain offensive production, uncertain position/defensive play and a bad injury history.

If he gets a 5-6 year deal, he'll win one MVP, have two seasons where he plays less than 80 games and on the balance he'll hover around an .800 OPS and get paid a ton to do so.

I'll give Ellsbury credit for playing up to expectations. Nobody really expected 25 hrs from him. Maybe with a better lineup behind him he hits .300/.310. Only he and Gardner seemed consistant - until Gardner got hurt at the end of the year.
Not

only is Melky going to play full-time, he will be one of the biggest FA contracts this off-season.

I agree so long it is at the right price. I hope they don't over spend on McCarthy. I would prefer they keep their picks. The Yankees were at their best when they had more home grown talent than free agents.

They
DanMetroMan : 10/30/2014 11:55 am : link
absolutely should keep Robertson. QO keeps his price down. 15.3 if he accepts. Why not toss him out a "fair" 2 year extension to that 15.3? Something like 3 for 36 with incentives for games finished and see if he bites? He's an elite reliever.
Yeah, next year with Lindgren, Betances and Robertson
BeerFridge : 10/30/2014 11:57 am : link
it's game over after 6 innings.
