NFT: Scorecard on US Ebola: Only the misdiagnosed patient died.

manh george : 10/30/2014 1:28 pm
The New Republic has a good article pointing out that Ebola in the US really isn't particularly life-threatening. Here's the score card for patients treated here:

Duncan, of course is a special case because he was misdiagnosed and lost two full days of treatment, and some of the subsequent treatments didn't exist yet.

Their point is that much more can be done to reduce the death rate in West Africa. True that.

My main point is that the fears here have gotten ridiculously overblown, because with modest cautionary steps and proper treatment, few will catch it and only a tiny proportion will die. My suspicion is that those who do die will almost exclusively be the same type of population that dies from other infectious diseases like the flu--young children, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

And it still isn't easy to catch if you aren't treating existing patients.
Just wait until the Ebola Terrorists get here

Yes.
The problem is the spreading of the disease
bradshaw44 : 10/30/2014 1:38 pm : link
If too many people have it, they won't be able to treat them all. That's the problem. So if we contain it now we are good.
It is contained now.
Section331 : 10/30/2014 1:43 pm : link
There is one active case - ONE! - in the entire US of A. In a nation of 330 million people, I'd say that is pretty damned contained.

can we just start a daily Ebola sticky and post all the articles, opinions and hysteria there? This is painful
Well, to be fair, the death rate is so low because
kickerpa16 : 10/30/2014 1:54 pm : link
we can intervene case-by-case (and don't have to deal with multiple cases starting to overwhelm the resources we have in place).

It would not be this low if the spread were more rapid, but the underlying point remains.

Comparisons between the third world and the developed world, when assessing mortality rates, suffer from quite a bit of issues. But don't tell a newspaper that...

Just remember semen can contain the virus for 70+ days.

And yes, preforming rim jobs in Liberia should do the trick.

I was very annoyed--they changed it to a Wednesday, almost always a lousy evening for me. And, to be honest, having gone about 3-4 years in a row, I had gotten a very good idea of what I like, and bought a few of the very good but not super-expensive bottles for my own collection.

So, no.
If I recall correctly...
njm : 10/30/2014 2:34 pm : link
The one patient who died was the only one who did not receive either an experimental drug or a plasma transfusion from someone who had beaten the disease. In fact, I think all of the more recent cases received plasma transfusions.

This certainly speaks well of the ability in the US to treat the disease.

The only question remaining in my mind is screening and/or quarantine of those returning from West Africa.

I'm at work, I'm not freaking out. I think you are misunderstanding me. I think we have the thing contained pretty well. My initial point to what MG posted was that in small amounts of victims it's very treatable. If it did break out it wouldn't be as nice looking of a score card. All I'm sayin.

Cable News Pied Piper? I guess ebola being the lead story on the 3 mainstream morning shows for a majority of days over the last 4 weeks had nothing to do with it.

This is all very good news b/c it speaks to the difficulty in transmitting this particular strain. However, think of the extraordinary care these patients required for treatment while containing. Before we pop the cork let's hope there aren't a rash of new cases from people coming out of Africa. These aren't contests about right and wrong. It's about making sure we follow a good set of protocols to contain and treat patients to protect the American public. We're figuring that all out now which is good. However, people have every right to be concerned about a disease like this. You don't want to get Ebola. You guys ever consider the long-term consequences of hemorrhagic fever if not treated effectively? It's not good. We need to ensure we don't have a sizable outbreak in this country. Strain on health care and morbidity should concern you all.
Would be great if this was indeed a non-issue

An provocative issue brought forth an unwarranted outcry, fuss and fury. People over-reacted including some pandering politicians. The doom and gloom did not happen. (Of course some say, yet but I'll leave that alone)

Certain people will now say that their fury caused increased vigilance which was the cause of the positive outcome.

But really, what's your point? Shouldn't we all know that there is an Ebola crisis in Africa and further that there were/are cases in the US? That was and is major news. It's Ebola virus after all. Does everything become sensationalized w/ our current media and politicians? Yes, of course - but that is due largely to a society that does not understand the disease and is looking for answers. Ask an Ebola survivor how they feel about Ebola virus. You think they'll tell you it was no big deal? They will tell you that through the course of the infection they thought they were going to die and felt like they were going to die. The minute that virus hits US soil it was absolutely the time for concern and discussion about how we should handle the situation. Why? Because there isn't a lot of solid information on how different strains will transmit. We are learning as we go. Science happens in real time - we don't have all of the answers yet.

out in a pretty desolate area. There were quite a few people around, though: reporters and their camera crews. They didn't go into any areas where they would normally run into actual people, absent the media circus.

Back on my original point: Not only has no one died, but the only people who have contracted the disease so far were (drum roll please)...health care workers. That's right, aside from people who worked directly with people who had Ebola, there have been zero cases in the US.

And the ones in the Dallas situation happened largely because the initial gowns they were given were just stupid. They had no covering at the neck. I don't know if that was entirely the hospital's fault, but health administrators somewhere along the line screwed up, pure and simple, or we would have had fewer cases still.
The nurse isn't breaking any laws
