NFT: Good place for drinks in Morningside Heights area?

NYGmen58 : 10/30/2014 3:13 pm
So I'm meeting a younger cousin and her beau for a "double-date" of sorts and they are in grad school at Columbia so we agreed to meet in there area.

Can anyone recommend a decent spot around there to meet for a few drinks?
Kinda a dive but real drinks and real local color

You might try The Gold Rail on B'way and 107th or 108th. You might try asking if Sheldon from upstairs is around too, and if he is, tell him Lou sent you. Dave Sheldon is among the more interesting people in all Manhattan, and a fine raconteur.
Hahah

Lou I had to look that up since I'm in the area a lot and haven't heard of that.

Here are a couple of good spots, both on Broadway between 110th & 112th Streets

from "Z'rail" as one of Sheldon's roomies.

Played a fair amount of "8 Ball", the pinball machine game, there too.

If as a young college student one got too inebriated to be served at any of the classier joints in the neighborhood, well the saying was " zere's alwayz z'rail" for a night cap...
We kept a large string of colorfull blinking Christmas tree lights

out on the fire escape. Plugged on and lit up, it meant the poker room was "open."

We were enterprising poor Ivy league college students. We offered free beers to anyone who'd come to play poker with us, and took their money gladly.
That's awesome

Must've had some real characters joining in those games. Based off that description our version was Canons/O'Connells on 108th followed up with a fat slice from Koronets.
In a different era
