Really?

You had to put that tool in pinstripes for his farewell photo?
Why did he wait two years to announce it?

that's a great clip.
Was a really

good ballplayer for a little while. Only had a short prime though. $60M in career earnings isn't shabby.
Seeing him in pinstripes

made me die a little bit inside. I would have rather the Yanks be the worst team in baseball that year.
Clearly was planted by the Sox

onto the Yankees to screw up their season. What a waste. The Greek God of Walks was a great nickname though and ties into the Michael Lewis thread from down below.
great Yankee

At least a plaque right?

Ironically, he is not even Greek, although there is a connection....

The Youkilis surname has an unusual history. His Jewish great-great-great-grandfather, a native of 19th-century Romania, moved to Greece at the age of 16 to avoid conscription at the hands of the notoriously anti-Semitic Cossacks. He became homesick, however, and returned to Romania after a couple of years, although he changed his surname from "Weiner" to "Youkilis" to avoid army and jail.
Speaking of youkilis' name,
Mad Mike : 10/30/2014 6:02 pm : link
on baseball reference, the url for a player ends with the first 5 letters of their last name, followed by by the first 2 of their first name. For example, mo's url ends with riverma. For Youkilis, that works out quite poorly for a person of his heritage, which someone finally noticed one day, so they changed it by one letter. Just your fun fact for the day.
probably my least favorite athlete ever

It pained me to see him in pinstripes. I hope I never see his ugly mug on TV again, but I'm positive that ESPN will bring him in as an analyst somehow.

That's pretty funny!

What's not so funny is that there is a town in Spain called Matajudios (Kill Jews) and another in France called La Mort aux Juifs (Death to Jews). At least the Spanish town had the good sense to change its name. The French acted like the town name was some kind of honor....
Quote:
"It's ridiculous. This name has always existed," Marie-Elizabeth Secretand said. "No one has anything against the Jews, of course. It doesn't surprise me that this is coming up again."

Changing the name would require a decision by the municipal council, which Secretand said was unlikely. "Why change a name that goes back to the Middle Ages or even further? We should respect these old names.
^ reminds me of a current sports story ha
