Free Agency Next Year - RB

robbieballs2003 : 10/30/2014 7:35 pm
I really like Jennings and I think Williams is a nice developmental guy to have on the team. However, we need another RB. I don't think that can be debated. I'm not making this a thread about other positions. We know we need to address the OL, TE, DL, LB, S and possibly CB positions.

Ok, back to the point. I really like Mark Ingram. I feel like he is just starting to reach his potential. I don't see New Orleans signing him. They have a ton of RBs on their roster and are up against the cap, I think. Plus, Ingram just seems like he wants a bigger role. He is not going to get that in New Orleans. Finally, we know that the Giants were interested in him during the draft.

Next would be CJ Spiller. He hasn't lived up to his expectations which is a good thing for us if we want to make a run at him. He would provide us with some much needed speed at the position and a true home run threat. He could thrive in the type of offense we have assuming we stay with this offense next year. He was on the trade block going into the year so it seems like he will be moving on from Buffalo. Just like Ingram, there was supposed interest in him from the Giants during the draft.

What would you do in the offseason? Would you go after one of these backs? Would you use another draft pick on a RB because this draft looks like an extremely deep draft for RBs? Is there another RB that will be a FA next year that you would like to look at?
I like both

Gimme some spiller please. Won't break the bank, he's talented and he's gonna be playing for another bigger contract. I like the FA that isn't signing his last big contract. That's the kind of FA the giants like.

If it was just between the two of them I would take Ingram hands down. However, when you look at who we currently have on the team I think Spiller is a better complement to what we currently have. I wouldn't be disappointed with either. I also don't think either would break the bank which is why I listed both. But, you never know what will happen come FA. It only takes one team to make a significant bid.
Ingram is good at everything
djm : 10/30/2014 7:58 pm : link
And has really truly peaked as a player after a few middling seasons. He's basically rashad Jennings with better chops and pedigree. We could use Ingram but spiller would seem to fill a bigger need for that change of pace back.
I would look at the draft
Blue Blood : 10/30/2014 8:18 pm : link
rather than FA for a RB.
Ingram....
damdevs : 10/30/2014 9:10 pm : link
Has lost a bunch of weight and it's done him wonders. He looks like a completely different back cuz of it.
Spiller
Giantology : 10/30/2014 9:11 pm : link
would fit right in, he's dinged up all the time

Haha
Spiller
stretch234 : 10/30/2014 10:36 pm : link
Isn't this the 2nd coaching staff that has thought Fred Jackson at his old RB age is a better option than Spiller. That scares me

You are looking at a 3rd RB

Just draft a speed guy late in the draft
Depends on Jennings
mrvax : 10/31/2014 8:32 am : link
if he's healthy, the Giants probably wouldn't grab one of those 2 unless they replace Hillis. If so, then great!

I wouldn't draft a rookie RB because they all need blocking & catching coached up and we are going through that with Williams.

Just because some fans had interest in these guys doesn't mean that the Giants did. I never heard one person associated with the Giants management that stated they had interest in either of these guys.
I would definitely like to see a speedy back
Curtis in VA : 10/31/2014 8:41 am : link
in the mold of Darren Sproles. I like Jennings and Williams pounding it. I think Williams is going to be a keeper as soon as he learns to be patient. But if the Giants can find a guy like what Wilson could've been, that would really be awesome.
You have to be a little cautious
Doomster : 10/31/2014 8:57 am : link
of Jennings, with his knee problems....not sure if that is the same knee he hurt before.....and while there isn't much mileage on him, he is still getting up there in age....

So yes, you have to hope Williams develops, especially in the passing game(receiving/blocking).....rare these days one runner can carry a team......by committee seems to work, but they all have to be good.....we need a third runner....Hillis and Cox are not the answer...hopefully, a low cost solution in the draft is the answer....
We definitely need that "change of pace type of back"
figgy2989 : 10/31/2014 8:57 am : link
Maybe a 1st or 2nd down guy that you can split out wide, set up screens for, etc...

Justin Forsett,
Curtis in VA : 10/31/2014 9:10 am : link
would be a perfect fit for that speedy guy who can catch the ball. Signed a 1 year deal with the Ravens for cheap. Would be available next season if they don't keep him.

So would Jacquizz Rodgers but I'm sure he would be too expensive.

I'd be looking for a speed back in the draft
JonC : 10/31/2014 9:18 am : link
UFA money is needed urgently elsewhere, and we can find a speedster in the draft around the 3rd round.

I really like Ingram, but he's not the speed back, more of a straight forward workhorse except he gets dinged. Spiller is a player you just can't expect consistent big plays from in the NFL, he's not the talent he was projected to be by many on BBI.

I agree, you can find that Lemichael James type of RB in the 3rd/4th round. However, I just hope that type of guy actually pans out for us, unlike what happend to James in SF.

My hope is if we can find a guy that could also be a return specialist, we can get OBJ off the punt return. Depending how what Cruz looks like coming back, OBJ will be our number 1 guy for years to come, no need to have him back returning punts.

I hear you. They have to prioritize the cap space, and then perhaps they can pull in such a player in an affordable manner, but I would doubt Spiller signs with NYG for $2M per, for example.
I agree
figgy2989 : 10/31/2014 9:37 am : link
I do not want Spiller either. He has not proved he can consistently stay on the field. I believe that type of RB (although not with as much hype coming out as Spiller) can be had in the draft.

what's the point in Spiller?
UConn4523 : 10/31/2014 9:40 am : link
he's likely a guy you have to overpay based on potential that will never live up to it because he's always hurt just enough to be limited or not play at all.

I'll take Ingram over Spiller hands down.
Would much rather them find one in the draft as well.
Curtis in VA : 10/31/2014 9:45 am : link
But if they can get something like the Ravens got with Forsett, at about $730,000 for one year I think that would be doable. Obviously there are more pressing needs though. The lines on both sides of the ball need tons of help.
Problem with Ingram
figgy2989 : 10/31/2014 9:46 am : link
If he stays on the pace that he had going over the last two weeks, he is going to demand big bucks in the off-season.

Spiller's speed and skillset on paper is ideal and
JonC : 10/31/2014 9:48 am : link
it tends to create belief among fans, but he's really only had, what, one strong NFL season? We've also had enough of players who arrive with a history of dings and injuries.
Ingram will want a starting job
JonC : 10/31/2014 9:57 am : link
and the market rate, but I'd make a strong attempt to secure him and look for a returner separately.

There's a solid chance we pick another WR in the draft, with the ability to potentially backfill Randle or Jernigan. Perhaps they'll target one with return abilities.

Go Terps : 10/31/2014 10:05 am : link
Jacquizz Rodgers, Joe McKnight, and Roy Helu are potential FAs that could fill that role at reasonable cost.
Losing RB David Wilson hurt us this year, no doubt about it
SGMen : 11/1/2014 10:13 am : link
He has something you can't teach: speed.

In this WC offense, he'd be catching quick passes, running draws and just being a change of pace back.

Alas, his neck is damaged and he had to retire. Just a shame as we've missed on so many early picks over Reese's tenure.

I think we need to draft a speed running back in the upcoming draft. I'd take a UFA RB for the right price. Remember, Jennings will turn 30 next year and that is usually the age a RB begins to show decline. I think Jennings finishes the last 7 or 8 games and does well for us but I'm not seeing him as a viable RB beyond 2015.
I'd rather look
Jon in NYC : 11/1/2014 10:26 am : link
in the draft for someone in the later rounds. Someone like Venric Mark for example could be a steal.

I agree! We need a back with very good speed. Early on teams against our defense, would clear out, throw to the RB who would run for a lot of yards before our Lbs would rally.

I want to run the same passing concepts with our offense, however, I want a back who can do that. That's why I miss Wilson and what he could have brought to this offense in terms of speed and acceleration. He had good balance too so it sucks to see him retire with his potential.

So finding a back who can be change of pace and provide that added speed would be great.
