NFT: Tick help with dogs

MookGiants : 10/31/2014 1:10 pm
I have two dogs, one of them will let me take ticks off of him no problem, the other won't.

Well the one who won't got his first tick in a long time, and he's not letting me remove it no matter what I try. I can pet him and touch it, but if I try to grab it or bring out the tick removal tool he gets very angry. Short of taking him to the vet to have them do it what are some things I can do, I was reading liquid soap would cause the tick to fall off, is that true?
Not sure if he would sit still enough
steve in ky : 10/31/2014 1:28 pm : link
But I have burned them off. Light a wooden match, blow it out and then simply touch and hold the hot head of the match directly on the tick. I have done this more than once and had success with the tick releasing. Sometimes it took a few try's.

As long as he is still enough so you don't touch his skin he won't even feel the heat as it is only the head of the match that is hot at that point.
As to your queestion. I have tried some soaps with no luck

I have heard someone say Listerine works, but I have never tied it to say for certain.
Try this

but our vet said it doesn't work.
Cover the tick in vasoline

It will suffocate and release a bit. Come back to it in a half hour and it should pull out easy. Hopefully the pup gives you a few seconds to pull it out.

No way will he sit still long enough unfortunately.

I have also read that it doesn't work, but I can say I have done it more than once and it has worked, so like many things it may depend on the individual circumstance. However if a tick in imbedded to where I can't pull if off without breaking off the head the match is my go to method.
get someone to help you by holding him down

It's what we have to do with our dogs. They both fight like hell when they have a tick. Usually my wife holds them and I pull the tick out.
If Your Dog Won't Let You Remove It
Jim in Tampa : 10/31/2014 1:38 pm : link
Bring him/her to the vet. Ticks are tough enough to remove from a dog that will stay still.

Also, consider using Frontline if you don't already do so. Most of the combo products that protect against fleas and heartworm, don't work on ticks.

I can get my brother to come and hold him down but I hate doing that, dont want him to be fearful of us, if it comes to that I will just take him to the vet and let them be the bad guys. Will cost a decent amount but worth it to me. Going to call him in an hour if he continues to not let me near him with tick removal tool
I threw in the towel

You may be too worried about "being the bad guy."

Dogs are very forgiving of any short inconvenience.

No chance. Not sure why you would say that, pretty ridiculous thing to come on here and say if you read the posts
I have someone slowly feed him a piece
giant24 : 10/31/2014 3:59 pm : link
of chicken or something he loves. He could care less what i am doing to him as long as he's eating and he is over 60 lbs. Most ticks fill up with blood and then drop off the dog once they are gorged i have seen. As long as you put the tick/flea stuff on and it doesnt look infected I would let it be.
I read that if you burn the ticks off, they puke inside the puncture
schnitzie : 10/31/2014 4:51 pm : link
and discharge all their nasty infectious crap into the animal.

Best to pull them out with tweezers or your hand.

This is why I've stayed a cat person. Much as I'd like to have a dog.

Also, word in the rescue community is that Frontline has lost its effectiveness, especially against fleas. Go with Revolution. Covers everything -- fleas, ticks, and heartworm -- and is very effective.
we're home
MookGiants : 10/31/2014 4:53 pm : link
tick is gone, have to put him on doxy because he was running a low grade fever and the tick pretty much was all fat by this point so it got the blood out of him. 77 bucks but worth it, they muzzled him and he was pretty good with me holding him after that, for some reason when he's home he wont let us do that at all
frontline
sps28 : 10/31/2014 8:37 pm : link
Put frontline on your dogs and in a day or two the tick will die and fall off on its own. Never pull a live tick off the dog. You risk the head being stuck inside, which can lead to an infection

flea and tick spray.

Thank you.

Ignore the post above. Watching beetle juice and not paying attention.

try bigblue's technique - it has worked for me. and of course flea and tick repellant - I bought one of those collars but my dog had a reaction - got hives and a small patch of his fur turned a different color.
