BBI Giants-Colts Game Preview

Eric from BBI : Admin : 10/31/2014 3:21 pm
FYI.
Game Preview: Indianapolis Colts at New York Giants, November 3, 2014 - ( New Window )
Eric, 34-17?
okiegiant : 10/31/2014 3:48 pm : link
This seems very likely and not up to your usual 42-0 range.

The Giants are simply not very good. I know a lot of posters want to blame this player or that coach but simply put the Giants lack talent.

Are they close, who honestly knows, but they need a few good drafts and some FA's who stay healthy before they can honestly contend again(imho).

The game won't be close...

...The Giants don't match well at all with the Colts. I'd like to see a good game but I'm probably going to bed early once again during a Giants prime time game. Hope I'm wrong.

This is certainly the type of game the Giants have won in the past. I certainly will be rooting hard and I hope you're right!

When was the last time Giants have won a game like this? October 6, 2012 when they beat 49ers, 26-3.

Sure, and maybe the Packers game(same year?). I mean we can't just call 2013 recent. 2013 sucked(and '14 still may)but the Giants always win a few they're supposed to lose and lose a few they're supposed to win. It's the Giants way!

Eli may light it up Monday...no one really knows.

Eric from BBI : Admin : 10/31/2014 7:39 pm : link
of preseason games, our first-teamers against their first-teamers have looked awful. It hasn't been close.
if they clean up the stupid miscues
WeatherMan : 10/31/2014 7:52 pm : link
and stay in manageable down and distance scenarios Eli can put plenty of points on the board. In this game that's not my primary concern though, for this matchup it's that the defense is going to get lit up. The Perry Fewell bend and break approach with a MASH unit secondary is going to get used and abused by Andrew Luck, and I expect Bradshaw to have a huge day catching passes out of the backfield.
"....not that talented."
SGMen : 10/31/2014 8:13 pm : link
Eric, I concur This team isn't overly talented right now. We could have had a decent year if things went the other way in terms of injuries. Last year we were ranked #32 (the worst) in terms of games lost to injuries. At least I have seen that posted on the board.

We had to be in the top say five this year and be blessed in order to have a good year. But here we go losing Will Hill (key loss, pot, bad judgment) before the season ever started. Stevie Brown was nowhere near his pre-injury form and it showed in those early games. We lose LB J. Beason to injury and he was our field general and leader on defense. We lose WR Beckham to a hamstring and I can't even begin to imagine how good our offense could be had we had him healthy throughout.

We lose WR Cruz just as Beckham is making it back into the fold and this is our biggest loss on offense so far. OG Schwartz is lost in pre-season and OG Jerry is below average, a serviceable backup. We lose nickel corners Thurmond AND McBride. How do you replace that much depth?

We lose RB Jennings to injury and DRC is also limited.

I can go on and on and cry about it but it just seems like we've had some unfortunate luck. TC does a solid job and he and McAdoo deserve 2015. I think Fewell is "middle of the pack" good and his defense works when the base four lineman can get to the QB.

At the end of the day, we don't have enough pass rushers to get to Luck - especially with Jenkins hurt and likely out. Unless Moore and Kennard really come on and suprise Monday night I don't think this defense has a chance against this balanced offense.

Colts 38-24 over Giants. Eli has a nice game but can't match Luck.
Way too many players lost to injuries to stay with the Colts
GeofromNJ : 10/31/2014 9:37 pm : link
And I think the loss of Jennings is more devastating than the loss of Cruz.

I disagree. Jennings will be back, likely by the Seattle game, whereas Cruz is done for the year and possibly never really regain his form as this is a very serious injury. I know Cruz will work hard, but this is a bad injury and he was going to have a big year with Beckham on the outside. Very big loss.

Now, losing Jennings hurts too but he'll be back for Seattle, I'm sure and hopefully will be solid once again. The time Williams is getting right now is also big so we see what we have with him. I think we'll see a better Williams going forward.
Just starting to get bad....
Tark10 : 11/1/2014 9:34 am : link
As the above posters have stated..too many injuries. I'll project a 5-11 season. Losses to Colts, Seahawks, 49rs, Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles, and probably Rams. We get our starting right tackle with a top 8 pick next year. Boy, this is a tough time to be a Giant fan. I'll be cheering for them anyway.
I'm surprised to see
PEEJ : 11/1/2014 9:54 am : link
that the Colts are only favored by 3-4 points.

I agree. If I am Luck, I attack Hosley all night long. Look for Bradshaw to have a decent night as well as he'll be fired up to lay the wood to us.

Losing Thurmond, McBride and Will Hill off-season killed what looked to be a superb secondary.
Plus the Strahan halftime ceremony brings back memories....

Lucki was impressive in Steeler game
jLefty : 11/1/2014 10:12 am : link
Score was lopsided but, man , Luck threw some unbelievable downfield passes. And his receivers are great.Super catches.Would like a good game, but am doubtful. Reese was right about the cautious offense. We possibly could have beaten Dallas but when we were in good field position we kept running into the center of the line.Oh, and also Luck is pretty mobile. He can get away from the rush. Tough.
Another good write up
rocco8112 : 11/1/2014 11:41 am : link
Thanks for putting my comment in the preview. I was reading it and when I arrived at the quote section I was thinking, hey these words sound familiar, it was cool.

Tough game this week, but Go Giants.

They're a better team by a fair margin...
arcarsenal : 11/1/2014 2:04 pm : link
And I don't expect a win.. but why would we base anything on pre-season? Even their 1st team against ours. You can't take anything away from that. It's just a totally different scenario.
.....
Micko : 11/1/2014 2:08 pm : link
I have a feeling this is going to be the game where the light-bulb goes on for the offense.

The light-bulb being a team and fan-wide realization that we suck.
Well..
arcarsenal : 11/1/2014 2:29 pm : link
This is a defense that gave up over 600 yards of offense just last week to PIT and let Ben throw for over 500 yards and Ben hadn't exactly been lighting it up prior to that.

It's a week to week league so there's a good chance IND sees their defense play better ball this weekend but it's clear they can be exploited so if we have a subpar offensive showing, that's our own fault.

There isn't a defense this year that has stopped this Colts offense. We're not going to do it either. The only way you're going to beat them is most likely in a shootout.

Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/1/2014 3:18 pm : link
because it was clear in the last two preseason games that their first-team was vastly superior to our first team. In reality, the 2013 preseason game was the first red flag that this "Super Bowl caliber team" (according to John Mara) was anything but that.
Your conclusion about the disparity between the teams I agree with.
arcarsenal : 11/1/2014 6:20 pm : link
Just not how you got there.

The main goal in preseason games isn't to win the football game. You're specifically trying certain things, working on certain concepts.. even forcing them.

Especially this year. A brand new offense, new personnel. It was impossible to really draw any conclusions about the Giants this past summer based on the preseason games. They told us as much.
I dont think letting Bradshaw was a mistake
GIANTS128 : 11/1/2014 7:07 pm : link
No one thought he had anything left in the tank due to all the injuries. But I agree unless we play "over our head" the game wont be close. But Ill be watching anyway till the bitter end.
I want a Giant Win

Talent

Who is all this talent that the Colts are throwing out there on D and really their OL.
You guys.
Reese's Pieces : 11/2/2014 1:46 am : link
Anytime those personnel geniuses Reese and Coughlin release a player, it's because they were "done." Never bad judgment or not enough cap space to sign them. Bradshaw was coming off a 1000 yard 4.6 yards/carry season. He was released to save 2.3 million in cap space. A two ring guy and a fiery team leader. See how done he is on Monday.

When people look back at this period when the Giants fell from elite to bottom-feeder so quickly, they're going to look at the 2012-2013 offseason cap squeeze. Forced the Giants to release players who were starting on the downside of their careers but were still better than anyone we had to replace them.

Like Osi. We didn't need him, another two ring player, because we drafted this sleeper pass rusher Moore. Osi was only thirty years old.

The team had no linebackers last year until they traded for Beason. Why did they say good bye to Boley? In 2012 he was second in solo tackles to Rolle and had three picks. (Yeah he was arrested for child abuse but that was just a fight between the mother and him over child support and the charges were dropped.) What about Chase Blackburn, who is still playing? He led the team in tackles in 2012 and had three sacks and FIVE forced fumbles.

This offseason, if true to form, they'll let Rolle walk and everyone will approve of not overpaying a player over 30. Can't anyone see how all these money-saving releases of players over 30 has led to a roster without much talent.

Strahan played well at 35 and the year after he retired people were trying to get him to reconsider and come back.
Colts should win this game
bc4life : 11/2/2014 4:32 am : link
but they aren't invincible. Their passing attack has done well but most of the pass defenses they have played against have been average or worse. Based on YPG best defense they have played is currently ranked 16th. Based on YPA best defense they have played is currently ranked 9th. Now the bad news - Giants are ranked 25th based on YPG.

Offense will have to win the game for the Giants. this means the Giants must protect well - Colts are tied for 6th in the league re: sacks with 21.

On a side note - Lot of injuries on the defense but with the exception of Beason - the front 7 have been relatively healthy. Yet, Giants give up 4.4 per running play. If Gilbride lost his job, I don't see how PF's is safe.
Bradshaw
bc4life : 11/2/2014 4:34 am : link
has about as many yards as Jennings to date. He's the least of our worries.
Jennings has run the ball about as well as Bradshaw
Reese's Pieces : 11/2/2014 9:12 am : link
this season. Bradshaw is averaging almost 5 yards/carry, but he is on a much better offense.

In receptions and touchdowns, though, Bradshaw has gone nuts this year, with 31 catches and 9 touchdowns.
