Bill Parcells' new book

McNally's_Nuts : 10/31/2014 10:05 pm
I bought it on my kindle a few days ago and outside of how he got his name "Bill" and how furious he was at Charlie Weis, this book was a waste of money.

Did not read anything anything I didn't know outside of those two.

Anyone else read it yet?
And yes

I had high hopes for this one.

Hang onto your nuts!

as you may or may not know, you can read the first few chapters free, then buy it. No Medals for Trying was good, but I'm probably not going to bother with his newest effort. If you want to read a good sports book, David Halberstam wrote a terrific one about the 1976 Portland Trailblazers called The Breaks of the Game. :)

I read an excerpt in SI about Little Bill and the Jets and it wasnt as interesting as I had hoped.
Does he give his side of the story...

re: his falling out with Belichick?
With a little googling...

I may have answered my own question...

From NFL.com...
Quote:
Bill Parcells handpicked current Patriots coach Bill Belichick to be his successor in New York, but an awkward resignation letter two days later ignited one of the coldest feuds in coaching. In his new book, Parcells, which is set to be released at the end of the month, the Hall of Fame coach dives into the issue a little deeper.

"He made a deal and then tried to get out of it," Parcells wrote of his former defensive coordinator, who went on to win three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots after spurning the Jets. "A deal's a deal. You want out? You're going to pay. Simple."

Parcells went on to write that he didn't "begrudge" Belichick for taking the Patriots job, and that he probably got it for him. Nothing like a backhanded compliment between former friends.

Belichick's side of the story (from an interview with David Halberstam)...
Quote:
JM: Discuss Belichick's relationship with Bill Parcells.
DH: It was tense during their years with the Giants and tense after (Belichick) went to Cleveland. (Belichick) was offered other jobs after being fired from the Browns, but he is an East Coast guy and felt Parcells needed him in New England (in 1996). Belichick had formed a friendship with Robert Kraft while in New England and wanted to succeed Parcells as the team's head coach, but Kraft wanted to get rid of all of Parcells' guys. When Parcells announced that he would not coach but remain in the front office with the Jets after the 1999 season, Belichick knew he had to get out.

JM: What was the worst moment of the Parcells/Belichick relationship?
DH: When they both moved to the Jets, that's when it tore apart. Parcells had a wicked tongue and he used it against Belichick and his star players. When Bill worked under Parcells with the Giants, he did not like the way Parcells had different rules for the indiscretions of Lawrence Taylor. In the book, I write about a terrible moment when they were with the Jets. Belichick called a blitz and Parcells opposed the call. They went with the blitz and it worked. Parcells was furious and over the open microphones in the middle of the game, he shouted at Belichick, "Yeah, you're a genius, everyone knows it, a goddam genius, but that's why you failed as a head coach – that's why you'll never be a head coach ... some genius." Everyone who heard it was shocked at the cruelty of Parcells' comments.

book was just boring and repetitive. The author and Parcells talk as much about Belicheck as they do about Sean Payton, which I found so weird.

And no mention of Parcells wanting to be Giants GM after he resigned from the Cowboys either, I remember reading and article here about that way back when.
Pretty sure the Parcell's/Giants GM story is
Ben in Tampa : 11/1/2014 2:03 pm : link
Told in "The GM" by Tom Callaghan. I'm not entirely sure if that's the book, but I definitely remember reading about how Parcell's and someone from the Giants (memory failing me) sat in a car in the parking lot of the meadowlands and pitched the idea after a Cowboys game.

Of course, everyone from the Parcell's side denies that now and I think he Giants just politely forgot about it out of respect to Bill. That's why its not in his book.

That second BP/BB story
Phil in LA : 11/1/2014 2:19 pm : link
is similar to the 1991 draft where Parcells desperately wanted Kanavis McGhee in the first round but the Giants didn't take him. Then Young picked KM at the end of the second, and Parcells had a fit.
I'd like a book

That had both sides.
It was

also funny to read how Parcells screwed the Buccaneers not once, but twice. If Parcells wasn't one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time, he would be one of the greatest assholes of all time.

I remember that. And KM sucked.

Parcells also wanted Darien Connor instead of Rodney Hampton
