Carl Banks : scholarship culture

dancing blue bear : 11/7/2014 11:17 am
great listen on joe and evan. talking about how some drafted players in the locker room have no fear of being cut, and have little interest in contributing. saying how it handcuffs locker room leadership.

mentions specifically - brewer, hostly, robinson

ERW - eat ride warmup is what banks calls it. he has talked about it before, but it is very interesting. saying giants don't draft terribly they just hang on to draft picks too long, etc.

it will be available as a podcast later.

banks is always a great listen

the GM ? Because he is right on the money
i think
dancing blue bear : 11/7/2014 11:24 am : link
it plays into antrel rolles play with passion, and JPP lacking heart comments this week. i feel like it hits the nail on the head. the draft is a crap shoot, to a degree. developing the roster and players, requires finding the right guys, physically and mentally. players are responsible for their own careers.

I would imagine JR and TC shape the roster together. obviously TC decides who dresses.
It's inexplicable
bceagle05 : 11/7/2014 11:25 am : link
that guys like Hosley and Brewer are still here. Just awful, awful players.
carl is on the money
dancing blue bear : 11/7/2014 11:28 am : link
it really hit home as i was listening, especially the thing about brewer, and how the OL has fallen apart, and the giants were trying to be proactive with drafting brewer, mosely, hermen, etc, but those guys didn't have the drive to succeed, and they have been cashing checks.

granted, they weren't premium picks, but we have found above average starters later in the draft and UDFA.

It does run tangent to the the thoughts i see on the boards about our talent.

brewer for instance. does anyone think he has less physical talent then dave deil, or seubert?
This makes sense to me...
MikeN in Ottawa : 11/7/2014 11:29 am : link
guys playing with no fear of losing their job...if players have no fear, contributes to malaise. Surprised TC has let this happen...get rid of these bums. All three of those guys have been non contributors for far too long...they need to go. There are probably others...Beatty?
That was certainly a great listen
figgy2989 : 11/7/2014 11:29 am : link
Carl was definitely spot on here. I think that is a problem with Reese, he just doesn't want to admit that he has failed on certain picks and will hold on to them as long as he can.

Take Adrien Robinson as an example...this kid did not even put up numbers at Cinci and he took a shot on him in the 4th round!!! Even if he was a "project" type pick, then how long do you give him to develop? Shit, we are going on over three years now and he was bypassed on the depth chart by a practice squad player.

Cutting one of these guys earlier would have sent a message.
Zebra3 : 11/7/2014 11:31 am : link
Now it's too late. We IR guys too much too.
pure speculation here
dancing blue bear : 11/7/2014 11:33 am : link
but i would imagine it is JR who is more reluctant to cut draft picks then TC. As a personality type, TC doesn't seem like the type to carry dead weight. I think the giants have done better then average in getting production from UDFA then most teams. I feel like the Gmen are a place were people can "earn their way onto a roster". then you look at guys like JJ, moss, robinson, brewer, garden etc who play out their rookie contract, but rarely dress.

implies that TC is stuck with these guys but won't use them

says ODB (i know i prefer old dirty basturd) has the mentality to be great that a lot of these guys are lacking. has the drive, and is just about passing Randle to be the #1 receiver.

Yeah it's a safe bet to say that has lareayd happened.

i think so, too
dancing blue bear : 11/7/2014 11:45 am : link
in fact i but randle on the bench and started ODB in my fantasy league.

but think about that. it took a month in the nfl to pass randle who has been here for 3 yrs. It says a lot about ODB, but also RR. Banks loves his mental makeup.

I don't like pete caroll at all, but i know that in seattle, mental makeup is as important to player evaluation as is physical ability. Seattle is also not afraid to admit a mistake, and cut bait.

those are 2 things the giants would be well served to evaluate in house
I really doubt..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/7/2014 11:49 am : link
Herman is just sitting around cashing a check. He was a late draft pick which meant little $$$ and he was a project.

If he's just happy to sit around and cash a check, he is really dumb - since it isn't a whole lot of cash.
Let's not laud Seattle's..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/7/2014 11:52 am : link
personnel moves all that much. They have flexibility because of Wilson's rookie contract, but in the past offseason, they lost their best WR to Detroit, Rice retired and Harvin was traded.

Now they are struggling on O, Lynch is possibly having a character issue and they still are weak at WR.

People act as if Seattle has been a juggernaut for years simply based on last year's SB title.

They have a lot of warts and have made some questionable personnel decisions, even with the extra $$ they have from Wilson's contract.

I think ODB passed Randle as our #1 WR the moment his hammy was healthy enough for him to practice
Seattle makes tons of mistakes
dancing blue bear : 11/7/2014 11:56 am : link
in personell. and it is no doubt mitigated by the QB's contract. I am saying that they make mistakes and move on. down the road they will not recover as easily from bad decisions, and it will haunt them.

they gave up picks for harbin and sydney rice. They spent a top 15 pick on bruce irvin. spent a ton of money on taverns jackson and flynn. i am saying that recognize bad decisions and move on from them

yup and the Seahawks are dealing with locker room issues this year themselves with Harvin (who they dumped) and Marshawn Lynch

just goes to show that championship chemistry is hard to keep together
Not a Banks media guy fan...
trueblueinpw : 11/7/2014 11:57 am : link
Banks was a terrific LB for NYG and I loved watching him play. The image of Banks bending Randle Cunningham in half as Cunningham completed a ridiculous pass to the end zone is one I'll always remember.

But as a radio guy, I don't like Carl at all. He talks in platitudes, never really saying too much. And he never calls out the coaches. This past week he was going on about the guys on the practice squad at the end of the Colts game. But he was really picking up on something said by Howard Cross. Cross was talking about how Chad Bratzke came up to the team from the PS and how NYG should jettison the guys they have there and bring in some new challengers.

Anyway, its pretty clear there are personnel problems. But going after the PS guys is kind of silly because how many teams have great talent on the PS? Its sort of the nature of the PS that you have guys that aren't terrific - otherwise they'd be with the big team on Sunday.

I'd just like for Banks to get after the coaches once in a while. He always bags on the players, which is like shooting fish in a barrel. Why not talk about the coaches Carl?
Herman made..

$405,000 last year and was only guaranteed $88K this year. Plus, he accumulated $98K in fines.

Take out taxes, his agent's fee and assorted other stuff, and that isn't much at all.

I have heard him go after coaches. not so much TC, but quinn for sure. He has criticized Fewell often (last week this team doesn't know how to blitz). He has been critical of gilbride in the past as well.

I have not heard him go after TC, tho.

dancing blue bear : 11/7/2014 12:12 pm : link
it isn't about assigning blame, per se. It is an organizational thing. TC is also responsible. We don't know how the roster decisions are made. I am sure everyone has a voice. I speculate that roster decisions are more in the GMs realm, then say game day inactives.

Look at these guys that make the team year after year, but never dress. there is a disconnect

I think Carl Banks has a good idea of what's going on with this team
ij_reilly : 11/7/2014 12:24 pm : link
I'm sure he doesn't know everything going on with the Giants, who does?

But I would be surprised if he did not have some real inside knowledge regarding the workings of this team - in the locker room, on the practice field, game time, and after the game too. One could argue his broadcasting abilities, whatever.

I take his comments as pretty close to the truth. In my view, the reasonable assumption, I believe, is that he is pretty much on the mark in regards to his comments on how the team functions.
I'll take Banks' view over anybody else.

The more I think about it, the more I tend to agree - I'll always be a loyal Coughlin fan, but I'm sitting here thinking...Parcells wouldn't stand for shit like this, he used to threaten to cut guys regularly

Trouble is, in the salary cap age, it's not as easy as it used to be to just cut guys when you can't spend much to replace them

what Ray Lewis said of the Giants' pass coverage after Monday's game. Just show up do what you're told and you'll keep your spot and your check. Sort of like some teachers who have tenure! LOL!

Lewis said the Giants were playing "Book Coverage" they went to their zones by the book, but weren't looking around for anyone to cover. I'm not a fan of Lewis, but I thought he was spot on. Too many times we saw LB's or DB's dropping back and letting guys roam free. Herzlich has been guilty of that on too many occasions.
Banks makes some goof points but Brewer is really the only guy
NYGmen58 : 11/7/2014 1:03 pm : link
who does not belong on the team (or any NFL roster for that matter).

Hosley is only here bc the position was devastated by injuries so he's a better option than most guys off the street.

I don't think it's fair for him to put Robinson into that category though. Sure he's been frustrating as a 3rd round pick who has done little to date but I wouldn't question his effort and desire to succeed. He just doesn't appear to have the mental capacity to "put it all together". He was the 3rd best TE this preseason and thus is the 3rd TE. He's played ok on special teams. Is he a disappointment? ABSOLUTELY but it's not like he didn't earn a spot on the roster this preseason.

I'm not saying what Carl says is wrong but it's a peripheral problem that ignores the core flaws of the Giants.

Anyone that's played high school football remembers there were always kids on the team that were along for the ride and the varsity jacket (like Brewer). Sure, they suck and are an embarrassment but they don't affect locker room leadership or culture. You simply ignore those guys. Carl is just blowing a lot of hot air, as he often does, even if eloquently.
IMO
old man : 11/7/2014 1:07 pm : link
Randle=ERW.

More importantly, the Giants have been historically a player friendly organization, keeping guys too long(DD eg., even Will the Thrill) to the detriment of the team success.
Once a Giant.... has its cost.
Immediately cutting a Charles James(I'm not promoting CJ) but keeping a Brewer is borderline lunacy.
Fear can be great motivation.

He is not collecting that money. He's on practice squad. That means around $100K.
2014 Draft / Finding Giants
Drewcon40 : 11/7/2014 1:29 pm : link
Weren't the Giants drafting many players that were captains of their respective teams? Hopefully the 2014 draftees (Beckham mentioned above) signal a change in the type of characters we draft.
I remember Parcells cutting Lionel Manuel

Matt M. : 11/7/2014 1:52 pm : link
This is no different. I think, as someone pointed out, it may also pertain to coaches. We have retained, for example, a vastly inferior coach in Quinn for far too long.

For those blasting FatMan, you are missing the point. Yes, the money in question is a lot for most people. But, it also may be all the money this guy ever sees from football. After that, he is on his own. Sure, he has a great start, but after a few years could be left with no viable option to make that much money over the next 5 years, let alone a single year.

Also, like it or not, these guys are kept for financial reasons too
NYGmen58 : 11/7/2014 2:01 pm : link
Mid-late round draft picks still under their rookie contracts are very cheap.

I'm not defending it or justifying the logic but just pointing out that there is a reason guys like Brewer hang around rather than signing veterans as backups.
1987 or 1990
Matt M. : 11/7/2014 2:01 pm : link
Same difference. The effect was real and felt by the team. There were other similar cuts in giants history. It doesn't even have to be a player of value. Just the notion of a struggling team losing a teammate for perceived accountability issues is enough.
IMO Kellen Davis outplayed Robinson
SB : 11/7/2014 2:02 pm : link
...Robinson was the 4th best TE this preseason. Davis had a really nice TD against the Colts. Robinson coughed up the ball against the Pats.
i had high hopes for robinson
dancing blue bear : 11/7/2014 2:09 pm : link
but he has done nothing. i agree he was 4th after the summer. if he wasn't a draft pick, he'd a been gone, imo. hosely shoulda been cut coming outta camp, and that would have been an interesting decision had he not been suspended.

as to money. true that mid round picks are cheaper than veteren backups, but UDFA are cheaper than that. also the new model where veteran minimums count less then then cash value against the cap has mitigated that to some degree.

Well if UDFAs are a better options than a draft pick, that's an indictment of those picking the players, not the player themselves.
Do Coaches count too?
kinard : 11/7/2014 2:38 pm : link
I mean the players must see Tom Quinn not being held accountable and the drafted players must be thinking they're golden...

By the way although Parcells didn't cut Lionel Manuel until 1990, he did get rid of starting receiver Bobby Johnson shortly after they won the SB in '87...
