At game today - met and talked to Jerry Reese

Hunter : 11/10/2014 12:36 am
So,

I have a connection within the Giants organization, who hooks me up with pre-game field passes every time I can see them when they are on the road - once in Denver, once in Arizona, and most recently today in Century Link field.

Met and talked with Josh Brown, Weatherford, Odell Beckham Jr's Dad (no kidding), Zak DeOssie (who is a real prick btw) and actually met and talked with Jerry Reese for about 5-10 minutes before the game today too.

First of all, he's a very nice guy. Approachable, polite, and you can just tell how much he cares about this team. Unfortunately I told him I had a "good feeling" about the game, that perhaps NY would pull it out. He did too - he felt that they had a real shot if they could run the ball and get some turnovers. The poor guy, you could just see it in his eyes when he responded: "We just need one win man, just need to get that win today." I could really see in that statement how bad Reese was hurting to get back in the winners column.

Anyway, we talked about the Seattle D, Odell, etc. Then, he introduced me to Odell's Dad, and Jerry's sister was also on the field. Nice gal...

So I walk over to the sideline because the whole team then came out for pre-game warm-ups. Jerry's sister happened to be watching too, and was right next to me. I told her, "You know, I feel bad for Jerry, because he gets a lot of sh!t from a lot of people." Regardless of whether you (BBI) agree with that statement or not, whether it is warranted - he can't control injuries, and he can't control who Coughlin plays and who he doesn't play. I've heard it all - good and bad about his draft classes - I get it.

SO here is the interesting part - his sister said: "Yeah, it's a rebuilding year - just a rebuilding year." I inquired a little further and asked what she meant by that. Her response essentially was that Eli is playing well in 2014, that they really hoped he'd return to responsible football, and that he has excelled in the new offense. But outside of him and JPP, they really have no supporting cast and they know that (especially with all of the injuries-Jennings, Cruz, Beason, Schwartz). They had this plan for 2014, and they couldn't even see if the ingredients they went out and obtained were going to work because everyone has gone to IR. Thurmond III, the O-line being hurt before the year started, Jennings, Cruz, Beason, all the CB's, the RB's and Odell being hurt for the first two months, etc...

Like many on this site, I hope for the best every Sunday, but it was very eye-opening to hear that those very high up inside the organization already know the reality of what is on the roster and that eventuality of this year is pretty much that it is over.

So - just thought I'd relay that experience from today. As easy as it is to sit here and just trash Jerry Reese, I saw a sincere love for this team in his eyes today, and in how he expressed himself, and how much he really cares about the New York Giants. For what its worth...it was a nice beginning to an otherwise disappointing outcome today.

That and $1.50 gets you a bottle of water. This is a business and half empty stadiums with a resume of classic blow out games gets most GMs fired.

of this season, we had so much to replace, it was a 2 year rebuild. I had no idea that all these injuries would occur. I thought we had an 8-8 team for 2014 and then get into the win column in 2015.

I still trust the Giants front office to do what it takes to finish this rebuild next year. Somehow the players have to avoid all these injuries though.

It was a 4 year $10 million contract that results in cap savings if he is cut anytime after the first year. That is cheap for a "bridge" RB during a rebuild.

I know Zak pretty well... He could be one of the nicest guys I know. I've seen him go out of his way to meet with fans and kids, and usually wherever we go there is somebody who will bring their kids to him, and he will spend time with them. But before a game, that is prep-time... they've got things that need to get done, and he's all business (as I would expect all of these guys to be).

He's got a quirky sense of humor that I think may be sometimes come off as being curt, but I am willing to bet that he was likely making fun of Weatherford and not the fan. Of course I'm biased because I know him, but I'd hate to think he wasn't getting a fair shot here because of a 30 second encounter.

those legs haven't been on the field in weeks. And it's not like he's been durable in the past. If Reese is actually trying to say he planned this as a rebuilding year from the start he's full of shit.

+1 BL

Hunter - thanks so much for relaying the information and your experience! Bet you had a blast in the 1st half of the game :)

Given that we are at a point where where are head's are about to explode in anger about the state of the team, hopefully, people will cool down in a few days . . . Nice to personalize the figures behind the scenes and hear some insight.

I don't see how anyone can argue with the point that a. it was a rebuilding year, and b. the most frustrating piece of it is we can't even evaluate all the free agent talent due to the ridiculous amount of injuries. This year has essentially been wasted.

All in all, I'm enjoying watching Eli regain his form and OBJ break out. I'm hoping we get to see some of the rest of the bench develop with actual game time. Hopefully it will reveal some gems or deepen our resilience in years to come.
Yes, it's a rebuilding year.
manh george : 11/10/2014 10:23 am : link
Despite keeping the game to a tie through early second half, the difference in athleticism between the two teams was already clear, and by game-end-it was startling. Even when tied, it didn't seem likely that the Giants could keep pace. They were being worn down on defense, and didn't have enough functioning parts on offense. Some of that is injuries, of course. If we had a real halfback, we might have build a cushion, and the wearing down of the defense might have happened a lot more slowly.

But sheesh, it was frustrating, even when the game was tied, to see the Seattle defense make plays in space, and the Giants defense entirely incapable of doing so. I don't think that's effort, it's more likely talent, back to Eric's original premise. We need more players with physical skills.
Here is my $.02
RH : 11/10/2014 10:29 am : link
after the way last season ended, we all felt changes were needed. Some more obvious than others. What we got were a new offense, a new play caller, and alot of new players in key positions. Before the season started much of the fan base seemed split between optimism and doom. I had hopes that we would return to the field healthy, with a new, exciting offense. Our O-line would be much improved, and the defense would be a strength. I really thought that we would struggle early a bit (which we did), but I also hoped we would go on that run & eventually challenge the eagles for the division. After the game in Philly, I have been in a dark place regarding our beloved giants. We are as bad as our record currently shows.

I am slightly eased at the thought that this season was looked upon as a rebuild year. We are in transition for hopefully better things, but we definitely need some more coaching improvements. The defense is broken & has been for some time. We don't scare anyone defensively - haven't for a long time. This needs to change. I am also still seeing too many communication errors between Eli & the receivers.

As much as it will hurt to see, we may want to go into full evaluation mode for the rest of the season. We are not competing for the division anymore.
I wasn't going to share this on here bc it's somewhat of a 'look at me

thread but I also have a "connection" to someone who is very close with the Giants Front Office.

He told me on the offseason that following last season, the inside circles of the Giants agreed that moving forward was essentially a two-year plan, with the focus of 2014 being to get Eli and the offense back on track with a new coordinator and contend for a playoff spot, with the plan being that 2015 would be a year they could win the division and make another run.

Now, it may all sound like BS and at this point should somewhat be thrown out the window because we are not any better of a team than we were last year, but I found it interesting. Was also told firmly that the Giants are committed to Coughlin for 2015 as well, so long that he himself doesn't retire after this year.

Again, take it for what it's worth...

So FUNNY all this DeOssie stuff is being discussed today. Was watching the miserable game yestrday and when the game was well out of hand and we punted, DeOssie made a tackle on specials and while still ontop of the guy, he got right up in the guys face and was running his mouth. Manziel is a punk, and has conducted himself off the field in a way detrimental to the team.

Tell me, would or have the likes of Montana, Simms, Elway, Kosar, Young, Manning (both of them), Wilson, RGIII, Newton - has any of the these QB's (a.k.a. Team Leaders or the Face of the Team) with such blatant disregard for personal conduct?

Not only that - he's a rookie. Rookies shut up, for an entire year, and learn the game. It's pretty simple.

I hope Manziel breaks his leg worse than Theisman

that makes absolute sense and what I've been saying since they signed their FAs. Personally I think this is year 2 of a 3 year rebuild, they started in 2013 cleaning up the roster, it just didn't work out much better than this year has. Far as them hanging on to TC through the end of next year, of course that is the plan. They need to give MacAdoo at least 2 years as an OC to consider him for the HC jobn, which they will, and both he wand Eli are under contract till the end of 2015. Makes only sense to hire a new HC when he has options as to whether he wants to keep the QB or then sign a new one.1 year was never going to be enough to evaluate MacAdoo or his system, or how Manning performs in it and if he could reverse his bad trend.I don't see TC going anywhere this offseason, it doesn't make sense to do that unless the coach of the future pops up as a candidate they feel they have to sign right now.I see no such individual on the Horizon, thus, they groom MacAdoo, and make the call as to the HC position, the QB position and what to do with Mac after the 2015 season.
Of course it is going to be spun as rebuilding.
RDJR : 11/10/2014 4:08 pm : link
Problem is in the NFL there is no such thing. This isn't baseball, where careers last 10 years or more for key players. It is a win now league and the Cowboys were supposed to be rebuilding too. Spin any way they would like but unless there are major changes 2015 will be more of the same.
They spent enough money in UFA
JonC : 11/10/2014 4:16 pm : link
to field what they felt was a competitive squad, perhaps one that could stay healthy, get lucky, win 9+ games and get in the playoffs. Once you're in, who knows what might happen.

The foundation of the team underneath was rotted, and pretty clearly wasn't improved a great deal with the past 1-2 offseasons. Injuries reveal this, paper thin depth, a pile of failed draft picks and careers lost to injuries.

They basically tried to retool while adding to the foundation underneath. Injuries ruined what competitive chances they might have had, but imo, this was a 8-9 win team at best on Opening Day.
Thanks Hunter

My question is when does the rebuilding start? It certainly hasn't started this year. If we were truly rebuilding why didn't we sign so many veteran free agents to one year deals? Might as well lose with the young players,no?

Your evaluation has some merit AND some holes but interesting nonetheless. Those insights aside, Zak DeOssie has been cited scores of times within the organization and in the community for his relationships with fans and charities in the area. You won't find a more giving and approachable guy on the team. Spend some time around training camp and watch him with fans and especially kids and your opinion might be more informed than it was by a 5 second observation in a pregame scenario. You brought some interesting points to the discussion. I hope these points are not overshadowed by a douchey knee jerk evaluation of Deossie. People might not understand how you can be so wrong about that but might still have heard something valuable to the discussion
