I enjoyed listening to Francesa today. He was in a bit of a tight spot because he has a radio-program to make as entertaining as possible, yet he's friends with Tom Coughlin. I think if it was anyone else other than Tom coaching the team, Francesa would have gone off and ranted that a change must be made.
Instead, he was measured and loyal to Tom and said: "I've never called for Tom to be fired and I'm not calling for that now. But if the Giants decide to make a coaching change, no one can say anything."
The question is: Do they?
Personally, I am of the opinion that Coughlin is still an excellent coach and that the problem with the team is completely related to the players he has to work with. That being said, at age 68 - even if he can still coach which I believe he can - he may not be the right guy at this point in time to lead the rebuilding process that this team is clearly in.
Then there's Reese. Are he and Tom joined at the hip? Can you make a coaching change and leave this GM in place to select the next guy?
If so, who is the next guy? McAdoo can't be. He hasn't even completed his first season as an offensive coordinator and his success in that position is not confirmed. So, who would coach the NY Giants if a change was made?
A lot depends on the last 7 games. If they finish with 5 wins or less, I think the house will be cleaned. If they rally and finish with 7 or 8 wins, then maybe Tom is on the sidelines next season.
Opinions?
Anything less than a winning record will confirm a 3-year backslide and be reason enough for me to want change.
Not sure about Reese. Conflicted about whether he should stay or go with TC and his minions.
PS - I'm not an anti Coughlin guy. Favorite Giants coach of my lifetime and that includes Parcells.
2. What will the giants do? The question is complicated by their long and complex relationship with Coughlin. But I think they ultimately will fire him.
3 what do we as fans want them to do? In my mind, there is no doubt that Coughlin is a big part of the problem. For two reasons: first and foremost, coaches just lose effectiveness overa long period with one team. That's no knock on TC. It happens to just about everyone. Two, he has not successfully adapted to the new passing style of the nfl. Like most 68 year old men, he is set in his ways and it will take a lot to make him change. He seemed like he was willing to change but once Jennings was injured, he retreated into a conservative shell. I think the last four games are the worst coached of the entire Coughlin era.
And I know this is a minority opinion, but I think if he is fired, he will be back coaching with another team. Maybe Tampa Bay. And I think he will do a good job, just like Andy Reid in KC.
But I think his time in NY is over and Both the Giants and Coughlin would be best seved by going their separate ways.
I also think that it is really obvious and the only reason a number of Giant fans want him to stay is loyalty. Thinking with their hearts instead of thir heads.
Will it be Tom? Or will it be someone else? That is THE question and Francesa framed it rather well.
He should have stepped down with Gilbride. Having this rinky-dink offense forced upon him to stay on was never going to work. TC is a big play guy, not throw it to the flats and run into your o-line.
I for one hope he steps down so he doesn't have to absorb the 2015 season.
“Failure isn’t fatal, but failure to change might be” – John Wooden
When you continually run the ball on 1st down for little or no gain it is a failure. On 3rd and long to continually run the draw its a failure. When was the last time it worked? TC may not be calling the plays but he is responsible. This teams special teams have been some of the worst in the league. TC was a WR coach, yet we cant seem to develop our own talent.
I appreciate all that TC has done for the team but its time for us to go in another direction. I would like to see us go with a Defensive Minded coach and keep Eli in a WC offense. We need toughness. This team needs to be more consistent and for whatever reason under TC we have been very streaky, very High highs and very Low lows. These last 2 years have seen far too many lows, even winning 7 out of 10 last season the team played some of the worst football I have seen.
Francesa made a great point, at some point instead of fixing the coordinators around Coughlin, you might as well just bring in a new voice.
I made a thread after McAdoo was hired that the Giants should commit to Coughlin long term because it makes no sense bringing in an entire new offense with a HC on essentially a one year contract. Are McAdoo and Coughlin linked? There are a lot of questions.
If that really is the case then Coughlin stays one more year no matter what happens this year. If that was merely conjecture and the Giants do not intend to hand the reins to McAdoo then I think Coughlin retires at the end of this year.
The more I think of the McAdoo hire the more I believe that they assured him he would have a chance to take over in two years. Why else would a young coach take a job under a 68 year old head coach. McAdoo had to know that Coughlin was not going to be around for a long time and that when he retired a new head coach would insist on picking his own coordinators.
I just makes sense that the intent was to hand over the head coaching job to McAdoo after two years. And if that is the case, the Coughlin stays for one more year.
On the other hand, I don't think the head office is an absolute monarchy. I think you have Reese, you have the Mara's (with both John and Chris having massive input) and you have TC/coaching staff giving input, along with Ross and others. A few years ago, there was a hint that not everyone was on the same page. We don't really know the behind the scene situation. We tend to lump it all on Reese, assuming that as the GM, he controls all. Regardless of what the deal really is, there needs to be changes to whatever combination constitutes management.
Personally, I'd like to see them all go. massive house cleaning from head to toe. That is unlikely to happen. Coughlin and crew are likely to go. IF the management team can work together in selecting a replacement, mgt stays status quo. If not, the behind the scenes power balance gets shuffled around a little bit.
While the talent is somewhat down, it is not so down as to allow all these dismal performances and 350 yds running against Seattle. Yes the LB crew is below average, but how is it McClain looked so bad Sunday? Did he just forget to play MLB? Did Hankins go from being one of the highest rated DTs to a sieve in a week. Robert Ayers and JPP just forgot how to play DE? Kiwanuka is cooked and should not be there, but is Moore so bad that he cannot do as well as Kiwanuka? That is BS because he is better at rushing the passer. How much worse against the run could he possibly be?
I think it is time for a change. I don't want to see McAdoo go. I like the offensive style. Can they roll the dice and promote him to Head Coach? IDK. If they bring in a new HC he's likely to bring his own OC. And, who is out there to be the new HC?
This the obvious answer. No matter who you may bring in to replace TC, the team will still be a mess through at least next season. TC is there to groom McAdoo. I suspect TC will get a one-year extension and then hand over the reins to McAdoo at the end of his tenure.
The only thing I see possibly impacting that time frame is if the team is a real contender at that point. Loyalty to TC and recognition of what he's done for the Giants over the years could mandate him getting a last shot at a third title. If that happens, he then walks away with his head high and, likely, some sort of administrative position with the team if he wants it.
The Eagles sent their god Andy Reid packing, and boom a fresh staff turned the organization around on a dime. The Giants really need to be prepared to make the hard choices that they inevitably will have to make. The product on the field is embarrassing, and if not for NFL contractual obligations, its amazing to me that any network wants them on their broadcasts at this point.

You and i are on the same page.
Coughlin and McAdoo are both goners:
The GM won't change.
I see the Giants getting a defensive minded head coach. They will ask that McAdoo stay as OC.
Too bad John Fox wasn't available! He signed a big extension this past spring.
I'd sign him to one last 3 year contract and start getting better quality people to perform on the field. That process has already begun in earnest on offense. Let JPP and Rolle walk and use that money to bring in actual defensive leaders.
That game on Sunday had to be an eye opener to ownership. Blown out at Philly, more competitive against Dallas but the Cowboys were in control the whole way, blown out by Indy at home, then just flat out mauled by Seattle allowing 350 yards, 7.8 yards a carry. I don't see how there are not major changes after the season.
After last season Mara went public saying the offense is broken. Latter Gilbride stated the Giants coaches have been going to Reese for few seasons, telling him they needed OL. Reese's failures in the draft have taken there toll in bringing down this team. You can put in on the coaches if you want but coaches can only coach what you give them
there will be changes
there are a few choices
1. Cleaning house - Everyone is gone , Coughlin , Reese and ALL the assistance included Ben McAdoo.
start from scratch
2, Giving Coughlin one more year but Fewel and Quin gone
but would the Giants for a second year in a row give HC who is 68 the directive to change more assistant coaches ?
3. Coughlin retires -- Reese can name Head Coach - it this happens does Ben McAdoo stay (this might be one of the requirements for new Head Coach) or does he go with house cleaning
4. Coughlin retires and they give the reigns to Ben McAdoo
There seems to be whispers of some plan already in place for when Coughlin retires and McAdoo being groomed as replacement .. Does this still happen if Coughlin is gone?
The key additions to the backfield and linebackers went down or are playing at less than 100%. Your top receiver and top running back goes down. JPP is still inconsistent and Kiwi is MIA. You stull have a o-line with under par talent and a rookie in there that is making costly penalties because the line is so bad TC is forced to play him before he is ready.
On top of that we still managed to give Seattle a run for their money as we did against a red hot Dallas team. This is all pretty obvious stuff that I am certain the ownership is aware of.
I seriously doubt MacAdoo was brought in with any promise of being a HC. His current position was a BIG promotion and it is not even determined if he has been promoted over his head yet. I'm sure TC was granted a grace year when they brought in MacAdoo as this whole year is nothing but a rebuilding year and THAT is why they gave him the 1 year extension.
TC will be measured by the team's performance in 2015 and based on that and how TC feels they will decide if they want to let him retire or give him another 3 or 4 year contract. I'm certain TC's job is NOT on the line at all this year. In fact, if TC doesn't get rid of Fewell or Quin I'm not sure the GM or Owners will do it either.
TC will not allow any number of injuries to be an excuse for losing games but if you think the ownership will clean house after losing so many key players you're nuts! The fact that TC was able to get this team to go to Seattle, the Superbowl Champions, and play as well as they did in the first three quarters shows how good he is. We'll be getting more wins before the season is over. BBI can cry for cleaning house like it does every year but I thank God the Ownership isn't the over emotional wreck that BBI becomes after every lose and after every bad play.
If Fewell goes, I make a strong run for Rex Ryan who I also wouldn't fire. Think the Jets and Ryan are a franchise QB away from being competitive. Not SB yet, certainly in the hunt for the playoffs.

If Reese goes so does Coughlin...you do not want an Idzik/rez situation on your hands...if your bringing in a new GM you have to let him clean house the way he wants otherwise no competent GM is going to take the job...

TC is accountable for the defense too, it's not all on PF.
I think McAdoo gets more time. PF - Not sure, but he definitely needs better players
Last night I saw the Eagles go for it on 4th down and 4 yds to go. Last week TC wouldnt go for it on 4th and 1 near the same field position. Also, I'm tiored of over paid Kiwi starting and doing nothing and Morre spends most of plays on the bench.
TC is more concerned with not making a mistake than making a play. The Eagles did trhe right thing getting a new coach a few yrs ago and see where they are now. If Mara HOLDS on to the past, we can have a similar discussion next year
Now, the previous GM was not fired, so that mitigates things, but doesn't change the fact.
personally, i'd like to see fewel replaced, and marc ross replaced. I admit, though that i am not fully qualified to assess the jobs they have done, particularly ross.
as far as ross, I know everyone is involved in every pick, i believe Reese is more involved in rds 1 and 2 and less in the later rounds. injuries aside picks 1 and 2 have been etter than leauge average(imo, eyeball test) the rest has been below.
I think we have done well with UDFA, tho.
as for fewel, he has had bottom third defenses almost every year, i can't stand this giants D. I think a very good DC would make a huge difference
And promote McAdoo to HC.
And promote McAdoo to HC.
God I hope not. That would be a disaster. Their philosophies don't match hc and oc you think they would match with Coughlin as gm and mcadoo as hc?..that would be awful..i think we have seen this year Coughlin strategy doesn't match with mcadoo
And promote McAdoo to HC.
Are you drunk?
... should send their laundry out for cleaning.
There just may be a clean sweep.
