Hugh Millen Breaks Down Giants Defense Against Seattle

Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/11/2014 4:51 pm
Quote:
To achieve a record-breaking rushing output such as Sunday's, near-perfect offensive execution was paired with inept defense. During Russell Wilson's career, no team has defended the read-zone worse than the Giants did Sunday. Their defensive-end contain was asleep, and the recognition and gap integrity by weakside linebacker Jacquian Williams was awful. And when the Giants brought safety Stevie Brown down into the "alley" area Wilson exploited, Brown seemed to forget why he was there and merely filled gaps occupied by teammates.

The Giants (3-6) may have played reasonably hard, but they sure didn't play smart. For Seattle's part, a synergy developed as Wilson's run threat aided Marshawn Lynch, while the prodigious running back's production opened lanes for the quarterback.

You can't break down

what's already broken.

It's mind boggling how inept they were.
I could have sworn the Seahawks already broke down the Giants D

This was about coaching plain and simple
Chris L. : 11/11/2014 5:05 pm : link
Rolle was on the fan today and said there was miscommunication. He kept harping on how there needs to be a better understanding between the coaches and players. That's on Perry Fewell. We didn't all of a sudden become talentless. We did a fairly nice job of stopping the Cowboys running game when we played them. There is no excuse for what happened on Sunday. I feel confident saying the Cowboys and Eagles have less talent on defense than we do but they get much better results. They are coached much more effectively. Their players understand their assignments and carry them out. We constantly have players out of position, receivers running free with no one within 10 yards of them, that's coaching. This defense will not improve until Perry Fewell is long gone. It should have happened at the end of last. It better happen at the end of this year.

You nailed it. We are still hearing about miscommunications after how many years? How are first year DCs not having this problems but a guy who has been here since 2010 can't get his guys on the same page?

Fewell's smiling was out of frustration,
yatqb : 11/11/2014 5:16 pm : link
because players weren't fulfilling the assignments they'd been coached to assume. Williams HAS to be dumb as a rock, and Brown not much better, as each gave up the edge routinely and fell for the play action fake to Lynch.

Of course, our DL and MLB got demolished as well, but that's another matter.
Yeah, there was miscommunication. And awful coaching.
manh george : 11/11/2014 5:18 pm : link
However, there were also players on the Giants defense, like Joaquin Williams, who apparently aren't capable of playing in space. His spacial ineptness on the play where he stopped running with the receiver and got beat for a TD was world class bad. All of the coaching in the world couldn't fix that.
I'm having a hard time letting this one go
TheHammer : 11/11/2014 5:19 pm : link
I have grown up loving these Giants and their defense. The storied history behind this franchise and all the great defensive players/coaches that have come and gone are dear/close to my heart. I've always been a "defense" kind of guy, even with all of these rule changes. I STILL believe a defense can win championships. However, I feel like my heart has been broken. It is sooo damn painful to watch this team play defense right now i almost can't bring myself to tune in on Sunday's. I am soo freaking angry right now with this team. It's one thing to not have the talent, but to combine that with shitty coaching is an entirely different thing. I'm a Coughlin supporter and want him to continue to coach here but holy shit does he have a bad record of hiring defensive coaches. Ok. I"m done. :)

wow. I actually am almost complete with the 1986 Giants @ Vikings game review and have moved on to the 1988 Giants @ Falcons game, when Hugh Millen played a key role in throwing a late, back breaking pick 6 to Carl Banks. He's probably still bitter about it 25 years later.

Williams or Ayers on the read options? When they both took the inside I knew somebody fucked up. I just didn't know who.
Every year...

Every year since PF has been hear I hear this shit and I am so over it.

Seriously, what good is some scheme if you can't get your players to play it. I don't get this coaching staff at times.

To have a coach act or think like well the players are missing assignments that's on them boggles my mind. Its the coaches job to coach these kids into doing what they want them to do.

I really do not want to see this guy as Giants DC anymore... Its time for more fresh blood. I love TC but man, his teams are looking unprepared more these days than in the past ( and they always did at times ).

Talk about walking the walk....
Doomster : 11/11/2014 5:54 pm : link

Team Speed...
BBurns : 11/11/2014 5:57 pm : link
There is Very Little On defense JPP has decent Wheels
Ayres as well . Then there is common sense Defense
its about contain . Now if we had One Player with enough
Speed to Chase down and or spy on Only Guy we had
that might have made a differnece on Wilso would
have been Will Hill as far as The Beast goes You need
a Player Like Kuechly that is instinctive and is a
Solid Tackler . I think Perry Fewell just does not have
enough Talent in the Front 7 I don't see one LB
thats Starting Material . Going back through the last few
Drafts is to me the Biggest issue . I wanted Sheldon
Richardson Luke Kuechley Mohamad Sanu Also last year
DT or O-linemen . That said We made a Great Pick with
OBJ . Better than I expected .But now were still
won't contend next year as well .
Not Many of us thought Wilson would be the pick when he came out .From 2006-2012 You probably have 5 players from
those Drafts Prince , JPP , DeOssie ,Randle,Kuen and Hosley
are the only ones on the Field can throw in Williams
who looks like a Backup at Best Jury still out on
2013-2014 . Its the Middle rounds picks that have not
developed or just didnt pan out . I still like TC
but in Reece I no longer trust or the scouts I hope
the Change is made before Eli is shot .

Amazing how you let Coughlin off the hook and want to keep him. Save for the 2 SB playoff runs and most of 2008, his teams have been error prone no matter who the assistants are. His time is well past.
I think Fewell
rocco8112 : 11/11/2014 6:00 pm : link
needs to be replaced since at this point, after years if ineptitude, this D needs a total rebuild.

That said, there is no way the Giants were not coached properly on how to stop the option running of the Seahawks. It is simple stuff that is taught and practiced fron pop warner football up to the pros.

The Giants defense just sucks, it has for many seasons and now the bottom is falling out.

Time to rebuild the whole thing. Also someone send a memo to Reese. Defensive fronts are important and that includes linebackers.
Every team has "miscommunications"
HomerJones45 : 11/11/2014 6:09 pm : link
sometimes you just have to play football and smell a rat when the whole offensive team heads in one direction. Williams and Brown are veterans.

You make a good point. I did state that Coughlin has a terrible record of hiring defensive coaches so i'm not letting him off the hook entirely. ;)
We have been
Emil : 11/11/2014 6:48 pm : link
hearing about miscommunication every year since Perry Fewell was hired. I watched him a lot when he was the DC for Buffalo and I thought his guys played hard and fast, but they were DREADFUL against the run while he was there. I chalked it up to having small LBs, but perhaps it is more than that.

Buffalo's defense is a lot better now since Perry left, but at least 50% of that is the money they have put into the front seven. Mario Williams, Kyle Williams, Marcel Darius (who has 9 sacks already as a DT), and Jerry Hughes was a diamond in the rough. Their best defensive player, Kiko Alonzo hasn't even played a down this year because an ACL tear. I guess this is what a 14 year playoff drought gets you, lots of premium picks. But I would much rather have their defense and it's aggressive mentality.
This team can no longer compete...

how poorly coached this defense is!

we need a new scheme, that players actually understand and like playing in
Agree with the Fewell comments...
EricJ (formerly Tyleraimee) : 11/11/2014 7:03 pm : link
but also have to say that we also have players who really do not understand the game. How many times is JPP going to pinch in and leave the end exposed? He either has no idea how this game is played, or is just stupid...or both.

Goes to comments I made in other threads about finding FOOTBALL PLAYERS. Guys who know the game and are smart on the field. Would rather have that then a guy whose physical makeup is truly impressive and we don't know if he can play the game of football.

Here is a perfect example. There are plenty of DBs who came through the league who could run a 4.4 40. However, if they are running in the wrong direction, then it just means he is running away from the play faster than everyone else. Conversely, a guy like Ronnie Lott who was not the fastest player was always in position because he understood the game and knew where to be. His mental knowledge of the game actually made him arrive at the ball faster than the guys who could run faster than him. This is what is missing from our scouting/selection process.

how many people still want to hang onto mediocre players at positions of diminished importance on this team.
barring a n extremely unlikely turnaround
DavidinBMNY : 11/11/2014 7:30 pm : link
The Seattle game was the deciding factor in Fewell returning next year. This defense is futile. His D is predicated on a strong secondary getting turn-overs. That's really his whole thing.

It doesn't fly.

I can't see the team turning this around and I think Fewell will be the one gone. I also think the next DC is going to be someone with a more impressive track record then recent DC's if there is one available, even if from college.
EricJ, I completely agree about JPP.
yatqb : 11/11/2014 7:42 pm : link
Not only does he pinch in consistently, but he hasn't learned one pass rush move since he's come into the league. He just tries speed or strength moves, never a swim, spin or any other maneuver to defeat his man. He's just not a student of the game at all, and doesn't seem to take coaching.
a tale of two halves
SHO'NUFF : 11/11/2014 7:45 pm : link
the 2nd half of Indy and the 2nd half, no, 4th quarter, of Seattle...that right there is enough to get anybody canned.
Tale of two halves???
EricJ (formerly Tyleraimee) : 11/11/2014 8:09 pm : link
that screams coaching adjustments to me. Just the game vs Seattle for example. We were running the ball well enough and had success throwing. We also were not giving up THAT many yards on the ground while on Defense.

Before halftime, Pete Carroll says we have to make adjustments to take Beckham out of the game. Well, they were successful AND not only that, they made additional adjustments which basically resulted in disaster for us.

Now, what adjustments did we make? You do not have to do it at halftime only. What about in the 4th quarter? it is as if we are rolling with the plan regardless as to what the results are.

It's always been an issue with Fewell. Why does he have a job still?
What always baffles me about performances like this
SwirlingEddie : 11/11/2014 8:54 pm : link
Is what did the team look like in practice? Did they make mistakes like this in practice too? If not, what is causing them to suddenly screw up in game? And if they are making such godawful mistakes in practice, then why does the coaching staff send them out there with that scheme expecting anything different?
it
Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/11/2014 9:06 pm : link
was NOT just about coaching. The Giants couldn't defend the inside run. They got blown off the ball. That's not coaching.

Outside gap...you can argue coaches didn't prepare players, but not on straight mano a mano stuff.
Williams
Dragon : 11/11/2014 9:19 pm : link
I'm sick of hearing this guy is the only reason everything is wrong with our defense. Oh yes he made some bad plays but did they only run the option to his side of the field, did Lynch only run thru or over him. Who on this team is being asked to do what he is against TE's, HB's and WR's all alone. Our defense sucks he is 25 yards down the field with WR's what happened to our pass rush or safety help. I look at our defense and still can't figure out what his role is since he is covering almost every skill player on offense.

The Giants defense has been confused
deadkurtrulz : 11/11/2014 10:36 pm : link
since the day Perry was named DC. Walking around at the snap looking at each other and wondering where they are supposed to be. He is and has always been a HORRIBLE DC.

The Giants won the super bowl because Chase Blackburn took the defense over and for the last half of 2011 the players ignored Fewell and listened to Blackburn.

The other OC has the easiest job in the world when they play the Giants. They play chess while Perry struggles with checkers.
That was ridiculous that this team had no answer
Jimmy Googs : 11/11/2014 10:59 pm : link
To the read option. Just like they had no answer to Andrew Luck. Of course there needs to be changes on defense, and it clearly starts with coaching. The only thing that stopped Seattle in the second half was that the clock ran out.

PF is a goner. And if TC wants to protect him then I think this season is his last rodeo too.
I think some of these Giant players

When you start a defense
nyynyg : 11/12/2014 3:36 am : link
with a new coordinator and there is massive confusion that the strong side is weak and weak side is strong, it might be a cute soundbyte, but it probably spells a recipe for disaster.

and count me in to not being able to discern what Williams primary responsibility in our defense. The guy was awful. But frankly, he was all over the place and on a diff skill guy every single play it seemed. That is scheme. One guy simply cannot make that many seeming mistakes and stay on the field no matter what level of football you play.
