Is this a 'Rebuilding Year'?

Dinger : 11/12/2014 9:19 am
Is that the 'label' that will save TC his job? I mean you have a new OC and slowly it is coming around. HOWEVER, the obvious needs to be stated, the defense is in shambles. I am not a fan of Fewell, but he has had success at times here. I look at the personell and I believe a team that builds around DE's or people who can 'rush the passer' and yet can't get a sack has utterly failed. Could the Giants have changed BOTH OC and DC in the same year? Will they change just the DC this offseason or will it go further? I think, as opposed to our offense, our defensive personnel is a bigger contributor to its poor play. Thoughts?
yes

It's hidden by the fact we kept our QB and Head Coach in place, but this is as "rebuilding" as you'll see in the NFL. Got Snee and Tuck out. Switched offenses. Imported a new Offensive Line. (2-year project, as it was 2004 + 2005.)

The Defense is next. Can turn it around immediately with a better coach/scheme imo.

And any fan that didn't know that going into the season was deluded. Yeah it would have been nice to get more success, but this was definitely the first year in a 2 year rebuild.

but I am not sure it's just 1 year. This may be a 2 to 3 year rebuild, depending on free agents brought in, injuries, and drafting. There is so much talent on be added that I think it could be 2-3 years.
Nope.

Championship.
The injuries on both sides of the ball

derailed the rebuild. Who knows if Cruz will ever be the same player, nor how well the other starters will fare, coming back from their injuries.

this is a disaster year 1 year late. They should have been

4-12 or 5-11 last year, but they lucked out against 4 shitty backup QBs. Of course it's rebuilding year.

It's a demolition year.

Rebuilding likely starts next year with a new regime.
Partly rebuilding coupled with destruction thru injury

We definately had a changing of the guard with a new OC, Tuck gone, Snee gone, new tight ends, etc.

However, don't underestimate the level of injuries we've had and it's impact on how we're performing as a team. I know every team has injuries and that they're a part of the game. However, I'd be hard pressed to identify another team with the same level of injuries we've had and that's having a great season. Every position group except QB and DL has had it's best player miss time:
OL - Schwartz
Reciever - Cruz, Jernigan, OBJ
RB - Jennings and I'd add Wilson since you kind of expect to get a few years out of a first round pick
LB - Beason
DB - just start a list

The talent level in the NFL is a very sharp point at the top. While fans root for the uniform, who's wearing that uniform makes a big difference. While all talent in the NFL is good, there's still a big drop off from the best to the rest.

New OC...

New offensive system.....

3 new starters in OL, new TE, new RB, new WR....that's more than half your offense....

Defense...

Kiwi became the starter over Tuck....Hankins became starter over LJ.....McClain became starter over Beason......JW became a full time starter....Kennard became a starter....Demps became a starter.....Bowman and Hosely are out there....DRC is new....that's more than half your defense......

And let's face, even some of those "new" starters will be replaced next year.....this team has virtually no depth.....this could be be a 2-3 year rebuild after this season......if everything goes right...

Can the front office finally get it's act together? Can the bad luck with injured draft picks and free agents end?

This is really a torn apart year....too many injuries, not enough quality backups, and coaching, well that's another topic....
Agree with most here

It could have been a decent rebuilding year had it not been for the ridiculous amount of injuries to some of our best players. With smart FA moves and another solid draft (and a little bit of luck health-wise), I think really think this team could be back next year.

I just wish we could have rebuilt as quickly Philly did with Chip Kelly.

I'm not sure what we're even rebuilding. A lot of players on this team are terrible and a bunch of those guys aren't just young guys who will get better with experience.
we had the second oldest roster

in the league at the start of the season. If this was a "rebuild", it was a fucking awful job. A typical rebuild involves accumulating young talent and picks. Wasn't that long ago Reese traded a pick for an injury prone vet linebacker. Mara and Reese had every intention of contending this year. Injuries, poor play, and crappy coaching on defense resulted in the disaster we get to watch every Sunday.

after all the money spent on the defense this past offseason?
rebuilding

What are we building?

We don't have much when it comes to developing talent outside of ODB, Hankins, Richburg? Pugh?
Money spend on the defense was a band aid attempt
JonC : 11/12/2014 12:28 pm : link
Bolster the backend, hope the pass rush would return, maybe the team had enough talent to win 8-9 games and win the NFCE.

In my view, they made a best attempt to reload and still work on the youth/foundation of a rebuild at the same time. It's failing, but remember these people are trying to keep their jobs and rebuild a football team at the same time.

There's truth on both fronts, imo. Not an either or situation.
Money spent was enough to convince most fans
JonC : 11/12/2014 12:33 pm : link
2014 wasn't a rebuilding year. How many fans post here daily clearly demonstrating their expectations were/are too high for 2014?

But, if you had a candid convo with the team brass I'm relatively certain you'd hear the word rebuilding spoken. The problem is they haven't finished stripping the roster to the bone, a number of players probably don't belong on an NFL roster, to be frank.

There's what's fed and you eat, and there's reality, in this situation. Imv.
A few of you hit it on head

We had one foot in and one foot out thanks in part due to ghe staff trying to keep their jobs. It set us back a year. We are two years away from making a legit run - need to add pieces in FA and the draft. Unfortunately, we'll also need to replace some of this year's acquisition.

plato : 11/12/2014 3:41 pm : link
us horrible football until george young arrived with a plan to build the foundation. 'o' line needs time (2-3 yrs) and young studs, same with the 'd' line. all of that takes several years and then you have maybe one nfl lb'er and a secondary that ended up on ir although there are some real players there. rb is not looking bright beyond the next three years and qb may have time running out on a splendid career and talent. too many revolving doors at TE, and the 'exceptional stud' from ? Pittsburgh is no where to be seen or heard, if he even is still on the roster.WR could have been hopeful but Cruz could be done medically.

I'm afraid Jerry Reese did not really have a solid plan, and TC doesn't have the time, and can't pick defensive coaches if his life depended on it. And then Karma turned her back on us year after year,I don't know how to appease the football gods but clearly we have offended.

Personally I am thankful for 4 superbowl wins, never thought i would see an appearance let alone wins in my life time, so I no longer am despondent. But I see little to be to be hopeful about in terms of a "rebuild" other than a total foundational makeover. .
a true rebuild would have involved
Enzo : 11/12/2014 4:52 pm : link
shedding a vet or two last year at the deadline for whatever mid-round picks you could get and rolling over cap space instead of spending to the cap for older players. Reese did none of this. He tried to piece together a contender with his endless parade of crappy vets. Unfortunately his prior mismanagement had left way too many holes (offensive line, tight end, linebacker) and there wasn't enough picks or cap room to fill them with quality players.
Mgt didnt see this as a rebuild
dcable : 11/12/2014 6:04 pm : link
They spent alot of money on free agents where most were past their prime. Our new OC was a result of Mara demanding a change not our HC wanting it. Kiwi has played like sh*t but still starts instead of Moore who has potential.

The problem is they've been putting off rebuilding. Now were stuck with thi smess
This is not a rebuild. We are in a death spiral..

They did very little to rebuild.

New OC and Eli, with a few years left, adjusting to his ideas.

Draft: A couple of shots in the dark. Beckham and Richburg were scores, Williams is a maybe, and Bromley is a who knows, but not startlingly good, it seems, and Kennard is playing above his weight in a bad set of LBs.

FA: Ayers looks good; Schwartz is an unknown, except for the fact that he's really slow; Beason is not going to last long (if even to next year); and DRC is so-so. None of these is the future.

The DL pretty much of a disgrace, despite Hankins. Jenkins is getting on and hurt, Kiwi is done, and JPP is less than he and the team thinks he is. WR? Randle and Parker aren't it. The back 7 is worse than ever, not better.

So there we are. Rebuilding? There's a lot of this yet to come.

I think in 2015 Giants could be competitive, contend in 2016 IF (big if) they have 2 good off season & find a way to stay "healthier".

Giants needs

- At least 1 more starting OL man (RT if Pugh is moved inside, or OG if Pugh stays there)
- 1 maybe 2 starting DE's.
- 2-3 starting LBers. Other than Kennard who's an unproven sucks or injury prone.
- 1 WR... would be a big risk expecting Cruz to come back 100%
- 1 maybe 2 safeties if Rolle is let go (would like to see Berhe before the season is over)
- Better depth across the board

Thats a lot, but not impossible to do in 2 years, but still a lot of work.
