Mathias Kiwanuka

Mendenhall : 11/12/2014 2:50 pm
He has been with the team since 2006. He's one of the longest term members of the team but does anyone consider him an all-time Giant? What is his one signature moment as a Giant? I should say his one positive moment because what stands out for me was his inability to sack Vince Young in Tennessee.
He wasn't unable
Randy in CT : 11/12/2014 2:51 pm : link
to sack him--he thought the ball was away and was trying to avoid a penalty.
He is certainly not an all-time Giant.

For reasons unknown he is, however, a long-time Giant.
his signature moment?

The missed sack on Vince Young...
His willingness
Fast Eddie : 11/12/2014 2:54 pm : link
to change positions and probably giving up any chance for individual stats, for the good of the team. I think if they didn't jerk him around and left him at D end he might have been a better than average player
He looked dominant

for the 1st 3 games of 2010 but like most Giants of this generation promptly suffered a career altering injury and has not been the same player since. He did have 3 sacks in the big win in 08 against Pittsburgh.

I think the neck issue,

He actually played well, the beginning of his career...
One of the problems..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/12/2014 3:02 pm : link
is expecting every player to be an all-time Giant.

There are guys like Kiwi on every team. Unspectacular. In the age of the salary cap - you need them.

Go down any NFL roster and take a look at 5-7 year veterans who aren't household names. They are all over the place.

He had a big sack (officially it was a half a sack) of Alex Smith in the 4th quarter.

You are an awful fan.
Kiwi played a key role for us
David in LA : 11/12/2014 3:26 pm : link
that casual fans won't understand. Unselfish player who sacrificed his personal development at one position for the greater good of the team. His versatility was key in the "Four Aces" package we ran.
A good team player over the years

of playing it's difficult to come up with a signature moment. I don't know if I could say the same thing about anyone who has been on the team for 9 seasons.
If only they hadn't converted him to linebacker...
WillieYoung : 11/12/2014 4:12 pm : link
he could have had two more years of being a mediocre defensive end.
The fact that he has been durable

enough to play in the NFL since 2006 certainly says something about the man. There's a LONG list of players who were drafted higher than him that aren't playing anymore. He's been a solid player. Not everyone is LT.
just another guy

whose career was ruined by injuries. he had really bad ankle, then the neck injury. remember the chris samuels cheap shot?
He has done nothing.....

this guy continues to get more snaps than Moore and Ayers. Again poor coaching
In 2010
ShockNRoll : 11/12/2014 4:42 pm : link
the neck injury derailed him, ended his season when he was off to a great start. He had 4 sacks in 3 games, primed to have a career year, and never returned at that same level. Between the injuries and the DE-LB-DE-LB yo yo, he was never able to effectively develop at either position, but has been a serviceable rotational player for years. He's definitely tailed off this year though, he's pretty much invisible out there.

Definitely not an all-time Giant great, but as an earlier poster said, not every player has to be. But he was a contributor to 2 Super Bowl runs (one where he actually played in the Super Bowl) and does not deserve to be considered in conversations of bad Giants first round choices.
I just think he doesn't have the talent level or skill set to be an
Giants61 : 11/12/2014 4:49 pm : link
all time Giant but I believe he gives it his all. His "all" is just not as great as some others. it does seem that Kiwi does not hold the edge position very well and that happened a great deal over his career
Agree with Eric on the 2011 NFC title game.
bceagle05 : 11/12/2014 5:58 pm : link
He was excellent in that game. I remember one short-yardage play in particular where SF brought in Justin Smith as a fullback. Kiwi tossed him aside like a rag doll and made the play, forcing a punt.

Agree with the spirit of this though. He's been a cog in the wheel for the most part, not a whole lot more. Coughlin seemed to like him from the get-go though, which says more about him than we can from the peanut gallery.
Not a great player
chiro56 : 11/12/2014 6:37 pm : link
But a very good man.
Did he live up to a 1st round pick?
GloryDayz : 11/12/2014 7:02 pm : link
Last pick in the 1st round, but still a 1st round pick.

He wasnt a bad pick by no means, but I think you expect more impact, at least for a couple of years, from a 1st rounder.
I think that he hid in the locker room during most games.
Reese's Pieces : 11/13/2014 1:38 am : link
That explains his lack of productivity. Three interceptions in nine years? Michael Boley had three picks just in 2012.

Sure you need useful backups and utility players. But you don't have to pay them like they are stars.
Kiwi is no longer a realistic option for us
nyynyg : 11/13/2014 3:54 am : link
i agree with a lot of posts though regarding his selflessness and putting the team first. i also agree, we as an organization have done him no favors due to the degree we've moved him around rather than staying at DE. and he was integral to allowing us to have flexibility upfront during our runs.

that said, at this point, we need to move on because he is often invisible and now on occasions a visible liability.
Decent player
mrvax : 11/13/2014 6:49 am : link
career affected by injuries. Gave his best effort. Don't know what else to say other than he seems like a quiet person.

I wish him luck somewhere in 2015.

+1
he's just about done
bc4life : 11/13/2014 7:07 am : link
but except for their ill advised attempt to make him an LB, he's given them good Return on their Investment. Think he was a B to B+ DE for the Giants.
If u expected him to play like a 1st rounder
bc4life : 11/13/2014 7:09 am : link
don't play him out of position - that's on the Giants, not Kiwi.
Great comparison...

Yes - let's judge how good a LB is by the INT's he makes. The guy has 38 sacks in his career, which is decent. INT's are more a matter of scheme and luck. Why not just judge him on the amount of fumbles recovered or TD's that he scored, too?

Fucker is in his 9th year and NO TD's!! He sucks!
I think the whole position change thing is an excuse.
Curtis in VA : 11/13/2014 9:00 am : link
Sorry. I don't buy it. He was a first round pick and one of the most talented players to come out of the draft. While I completely disagree with him having to switch to LB, its still no reason for him to be as mediocre as he has been at DE. Maybe there have been injury issues we don't know about, or maybe he's just not very good...but the position switch is just an excuse for a well-liked player.
He's just kind of there
AnyoneButPhilly : 11/13/2014 10:00 am : link
He's not terrible but he's also not very good. I don't think anyone is sweating it out in the film room wondering how to contain Kiwanuka.
Per PFF
BigBlueinChicago : 11/13/2014 10:05 am : link
Kiwanuka has graded out negatively in 23 of his last 30 games dating back to December 2012.

He is closing in on nearly two FULL seasons of poor play with still plenty of games to go.

Do you realize that he basically had to change his body make up in order to go to LB er? Then he had to change it all over again to switch back. That takes a toll on the guy so no its not an excuse.
position switch
bc4life : 11/14/2014 4:17 pm : link
is a reason for him playing poorly as an lb and it also hindered his development. the past two years - he's probably just aging out of the league

Why is he still starting and Moore sits on the bench????
This is why we need a totally new coaching staff
