NFT: So I apparently lost a job last weekend

Hades07 : 11/14/2014 10:01 am
This is weird, has anybody dealt with a situation like this? Not sure how to proceed, or to just forget it and move on.

I have/had a side job doing receiving and AP for a grocery store for the past 3 years. Every Saturday for 12 hours, like clock work. I had a review two months ago and it was glowing. This past Saturday, I came into work and somebody else came in and told me he was there to do my job. Confused I checked my email and nothing. Checked the schedule and I was not on it and he was, though when I was last in I was scheduled to be there, so it was changed. I am on none of the future schedules, so I figured I must have been fired. But no word from my boss or the company as to why or even that I was fired and no attempt to contact them has succeeded. My discount card still works though even though it should be shut off automatically if terminated and I still have my keys (which open any door in the place).

Should I just say F-it and move on at this point or should I continue to try to figure out what happened?

Problem solved.

Oh, make sure to take all of the money out of the place first.
Sounds like the first step in trying to move you out...

Take away your hours hoping you get pissed and just quit. They most likely have nothing on you to fire you outright, so this is the manager's way to get rid of you.

You should definitely follow up with the manager, and if you get no response speak to the HR representative.
Sound like a great company...

I think just move on, not worth the stress in my opinion. Lifes short dont dwell on the little things, 12 hours a week at a grocery store cant be life changing money, youll find something else to supplement in future

Goodluck

Figured this might be it, but why wouldn't they be there and demand my keys, been working for them in one capacity or another for almost 10 years. If I were them I wouldn't risk pissing somebody off who had keys to everything, including the cash room. Not that I would rob them, but geez there is over $100-200k in cash on hand at any given moment, seems stupid to me. Since I also back up the cash office if somebody is sick I even know the safe combo.

Is this a small store/chain or a large chain? A large one would likely have some type of process an de-activate your key if you were fired.

I saw something like this once when Circuit City was going under, there was an entire shift of employees that were let go who had no idea, in part because the manager and assistant manager were both laid off as well. Apparently, enough confusion ensued to end up in the local paper because it took them 3 days to figure out they had been let go.
I don't even really work here

I did that, went back later that day and they got her on the phone and she would not speak to me and told them to tell me she would call me, every day since Saturday. None of the other managers know what is going on and I reported directly to the store manager. Just go off the phone with regional and national HR and they have no record of me being terminated. But as an under 20 hour a week employee, the store does not have to schedule me every week. They agree though that this is highly unusual and not the proper expected behavior when letting somebody go or reducing their hours. Company policy is to inform them 4 weeks out if a budget concern causes a change or elimination of hours. They also said there is nothing they can do and I should wait to hear back from my manager. She also said there is no documentations (write-ups) in my file, so she can not terminate me based on performance of policy. They can lay me off, but no lay-offs have been approved at my location.

terrible job. I'd be happy I never have to do that anymore.

MadPlaid : 11/14/2014 11:30 am : link
Shouldn't they be able to light a fire under this manager? I work in HR, and if I got a call like yours, the first thing I would be doing is contacting that manager on your behalf. Managers can set the company up for liability if they mishandle employee relations. HR should be doing everything it can to avoid the company being sued by an employee.
How to get your boss to contact you:
mrvax : 11/14/2014 11:44 am : link
1. drink as much fluids as you can without expelling any.
2. enter the store at a time that few if any workers will be present.
3. carefully select pallets/boxes that are of great monetary value.
4. urinate all over said pallets/boxes of product until they are saturated.
5. repeat step 4 as necessary.
6. wait for the call from your boss the following day.

wants you to just go away and then when you attempt to claim unemployment benefits they will say that you abandoned your job.

If I were you I would send certified letters to your immediate supervisor and company human resources departement asking to be notified of your status. If you have an email address for any of the above, or anyone else that you can think of, send them emails as well. In your letters and or emails I would notify the Employer that since you are no longer on the schedule you will be applying for unemployment benefits.

Keep your appraisal as the Employer might try to say that you were terminated for cause when you apply for benefits. It would not suprise me if they say that they were forced to switch your schedule to hours that you work another job, so you abandoned your job with them. If they try that argument inform unemplyment that you were constructively discharged.

I'm not sure about the suggestion that you come to work, punch in and do nothing. That seems like it might create some liability on your part, especially if you work pursuant to a posted schedule.

I'm curious as to what is going on. Post when you figure it out.

My guess is there is some form a nepotism with the other guy getting the job and since he wasn't hired using normal practices the part of them informing you got missed.
I wonder if the new person

Maybe they're fucking or something.

I know in my business you get walked out the door and all accounts locked/shutdown. A pissed off ex-IT-employee can do a tremendous amount of damage depending on the type of access they have.

And yes, please post what you find out why.

clocking in and out. Its up to them to get back to you. You have done everything you can from your side. You have ask around at the job. You contacted HR. Now the next move is up to them. If they want to pay you for doing nothing that is up to them, its their call

steve in ky : 11/14/2014 12:48 pm : link
Since it sounds like he was paid hourly based on a weekly posted schedule and if he is not posted on the schedule to work I doubt they would pay him just for showing up anyway and not working. Your suggestion would only work with a salaried position.
First, find out if you can collect unemployment benefits for your job
Bramton1 : 11/14/2014 12:51 pm : link
With a psrt-time job, it's usually related to having worked a certain amount of hours. I don't if it's a total hours number or a annual hours number. Check on that.

Especially if you can apply for unemployment benefits, create a paper trail. I agree with the suggestion of certified letters. Make copies of everything. If you even know someone who has a notary public license, get them to stamp your originals and your copies. This is all to prove your attempts to find out your job status in case they try to claim abandonment.

Finally, consult with an employment lawyer. The HR department already said they can't terminate you for performance, so this passive-aggressive tactic of taking you off the schedule until you just quit has to violate something. If it does, have the lawyer draft a letter to the company, and send it to the manager, HR department, and regional office. That will get things moving again, almost guaranteed.
What grocery store chain?

Go to personnel/management
old man : 11/14/2014 12:52 pm : link
and ask if you can use them for a positive reference.
If they start to ask questions, that opens the door in case there was some mixup.
If they say OK, just say, 'BTW, I was never officially notified
so could you/someone please tell me why I apparently have been terminated?'. And ask for a copy of your peronnel folder(at least the part re: the review).
Follow through; you've already been anal-yzed by them.

I'd rather not say, for multiple reasons. Plus this seems to be all on my manager since nobody else in management in the store knows anything about it, nor anyone over her head. They all could be FOS, but being with the company for almost 10 years, I know a lot of people in management very well, one of them would have A-warned me if they knew anything or B-told me by now if they did.

Also, since I am not terminated, I may call one of them and get a new spot. Easy work, decent money and 20% discount on food. I am not just going to let that get away if I don't have to.

I'll get you all an update when/if I hear anything, but tonight I am going to work the phones to find a new position.

Thank you all for the advice.
Good luck with it and I hope that you land a spot

Hmm, I didn't see that you said she would not take your calls. Actually I still don't see that except in your reply... lol. Well that's pretty effed up anyway. Not sure what I would do except try to wait for her there one day/evening and see her face to face.

UPDATE
Hades07 : 11/14/2014 11:24 pm : link
Well I still don't know what is going on, but I have a new spot in the company. I start in about 9 hours. HR approved the transfer without my boss's signature because she can't be reached before Monday morning and I am already off the schedule. Lose only 2 hours as he only needs me for 10, but I get the same rate and am now eligible for another increase in 6 weeks instead of 10 months.
