Didn't watch the game yesterday. Am I a bad Giant fan?

Tittle 9 20 64 : 11/17/2014 7:27 am
Or am I a good fan not able to watch my beloved Giants play so poorly, and stoop to lows I never thought possible.
No

Just a bad fan.
You are

a fair weather fan.
Couldn't care less if you watch or not.
shepherdsam : 11/17/2014 7:31 am : link

Strange though, that you won't watch the game but that you'd be here bright and early Monday to talk about it.
I think so. Do me a favor - go play in traffic

and then come back and let us know if you're bad at that too.
No, but you're a...

The only fans worse than those who don't watch

are those that root for the Giants to lose to get a better draft pick. The Internet has introduced me to "fans" I wouldn't piss in if they were on fire

Your "fandom" is yours and yours alone. No such thing as a bad fan given that reality.

Share the game with a group of other people, and your fan habits do become relevant however. In that scenario you can be a bad fan.

Or refuse to watch with others you normally share games with. Bad fan in that scenario too.

Not watching by yourself?

To borrow from the old blues song, ain't nobody's bizness if you do.

you're not a bad fan, just less of an involved fan than many of us.

Back in the bad old days of 15 years of bad football
Headhunter : 11/17/2014 7:59 am : link
I would make sure I had access to a radio or TV at a wedding or any event that was scheduled during a Giant game. Games were blacked out, listened to Marty Glickman and Al DeRogatis or Chip CIppola. Maybe it was a different time and I was too invested, but everything was built around Sunday's game. Not saying that made me a better fan, but I assumed all Giant fans did the same
Joe, I think your right.

Strange how my priorities have changed since I've grown older.

Are you still that invested?

I watched bits and pieces in the gym and then most of the 2nd half at home as I didnt feel like being glued to the screen again in my apt. But its the morning after and people are understandably disappointed so when you make a 'look at me' thread about how you dont care so much anymore youre gonna hear about it.

Fuck everyone else and what they think. Unless perhaps you are going post a thread on BBI. Then you better have some thick skin. Because they're going to tell you what they think like it or not.

Sorry, didn't intend it to be a " look at me thread " at all. I'm really not that type of person.
I too did the radio thing

Glickman Dero & Chip Cipolla
I am 58 years old and I never for 1 year stopped my infatuation with this team. I identify, and friends and family identify me as a fanatic. Will go to my grave that way.

It does not mean there are not other things in life, but Sundays are about the Giants and the NFL, as a very religious person cancels out their Saturday or Sunday for religious activities.

Of all the addictions one could have, I could think of worse, and thank you Erik Kennedy for creating this site where diehards can vent.
Football is entertainment.

If you want to be miserable, watch these games. But you'll probably be happier if you don't.

BTW....The bonding created
NewBlue : 11/17/2014 8:24 am : link
With my 24 yr old son every Sunday, as he comes with other diehards to my house to settle down and watch Big Blue can't be replaced. I did it with my dad and it was the best memory, going to games watching them on TV or listening on the radio. Sunday in the fall was and continues to be a passion for me, and I won't let their piss poor play take that passion away

going overboard is understandable, but rooting for the Giants to lose and call yourself a fan is bullshit

It's been tough sledding watching the mess, we traveled to Cincinnati, Baltimore, Carolina in the last 2 years, we extended more effort getting to the games than the team put out. When the schedule came out this year I had Tennessee circled as our road trip, but I won't invest that type of commitment now. How bad is it sitting in a warm cozy room with family and or friends watching the NFL and specifically the Giants for several hours?

This is a once a week activity for 4 months, and those 4 months are now just about over. As bad as they are, I'll be pining for training camp to start next July.
My son had back to back soccer games at 11:00 and 1:00
lawguy9801 : 11/17/2014 8:32 am : link
So I missed the first half yesterday. But after that debacle I'm sorry he didn't have a triple header.

Look, I can't blame someone for not wanting to watch what every Giant fan knew in their heart was going to be a debacle. Last year, for the first time, maybe ever, I consciously made the choice to not watch a game - my kids and wife had been bugging me to go see the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, and it worked out that a good day to go for us was the Sunday of the Seahawks game. Boy, was that a good decision. Of course I was refreshing my phone every couple of minutes for updates, but given how invested I get in games I'm glad I didn't put myself through that and instead had an enjoyable day. That said, had the game had playoff importance for the Giants or if I weren't convinced they would shit the bed, I would have arranged the schedule around it.

But in general, my feeling is, football is by far my favorite sport, and the Giants are the team I am most invested in, and I would never even contemplated, say, simply popping in a movie and lounging at home while a game is on.
Rooting for us to lose
NewBlue : 11/17/2014 8:33 am : link
It does not happen. What does happen is when you get to the inevitable point in a game you say to yourself, could this be the worst thing to happen?

Try being a Mets fan

Agree. 100%. The draft pick thing riles me up no end
Years ago I was the Little League commissioner
NewBlue : 11/17/2014 8:38 am : link
Of my sons fall league, I took the position because I could be the schedule maker for the league. We played Saturdays and Sundays only in the Fall.

I scheduled everyone one of my son's games on Saturday, unless the Giants had a bye or played Sunday or Monday night.

Once the G-men had a Sunday 4pm game and I schedulled our LL game for Sunday at 1:00pm....ran like a bat out of hell to get home for the KO at 4pm.....forget to bring 2 kids home after the LL game......love my wife.....

Me too. I'm not going to quit watching, but I do other things.

I just can't see myself turning into a frothing at the mouth ranter over a bad football team. I don't want my escape from real life to be just as stressful as real life.

Story: I was in Puerto Rico for Thanksgiving the year the Giants played Seattle @ Seattle. The Feely missed FGs game.

I was in a shitty mood for days. That's how I learned to stop investing so much into it.
Nothing wrong with that at all.
Curtis in VA : 11/17/2014 8:44 am : link
ITS A GAME. There's no point in letting it ruin your day and it certainly shouldn't come before things that actually matter in life, like family.

Normally I'd say to each his own but if we're throwing stones, anyone that tells you something is wrong with you for not watching should probably get a life. Something is wrong with them.
Sunday has become very productive for me

As I know I cancel out 1-7pm, I start with errands and my do to list early in the morning so I can grant myself the time to do what I passionately want to to
I don't care what you do with your time
Route 9 in LEH : 11/17/2014 8:49 am : link
don't mean to sound crude. Truthfully, it is your decision to do whatever you please with your time, and that includes not watching a Giants game, and that also includes composing a thread about it on BBI.

Oddly enough, this post sounds like a cliche porn plot centered around a horny neighbor who broke her 55 year old neighbor's alarm clock and "needs a spanking"...

Joking aside, I'm actually jealous of you because I would have just loved to read about the 5 INT day instead of taking that one to the chin. Good morning from RSC! Disconnected.
It's whatever floats your boat
NewBlue : 11/17/2014 8:50 am : link
If this was a 5 day a week league like MLB or NHL....who can do that type of devotion. This is 1 day a week and it's a passion. Now those with little kids and true family obligations........Now I bond with my son over this ritual.
It wasn't on here,
yankfan : 11/17/2014 8:55 am : link
and I didn't feel like going to a bar to watch, but I followed on the game tracker from NFL.com. Saved me a lot of SMH's.
It doesn't make you a die hard fan

But this years team doesn't get me excited to watch them. I still do because i love seeing them on my tv. I waited all off season to see them. i am going to watch them no matter how bad. especially when they are this bad, so we can appreciate when they are good. i don't root for them to lose to get a better draft pick, but when they lose, that does make me feel better about it i guess. At this point, it is a win win. I just want them to play with heart and not give up. If they lose, lose, but stop with these embarrassing loses.
The Giants
Headhunter : 11/17/2014 8:57 am : link
have made us old fans do a lot of strange things over the years that only make sense to us. The times I was on a plane on a Sunday taping the game trying to avoid the airport TV's and looking at anyone's face because I could figure out the score.
Better question

If the Giants game was not on locally, but you followed the game on BBI, game cast, and attempted but could not find a stream to work on your Microsoft os, does that count?
YES

I missed most of the game yesterday too as I just moved and had to get things done around the apt. I set the TV up and tuned in just as the Giants missed on the 4th and Goal at the 3. What a disaster.

I did watch the Eagles vs GB game and enjoyed the thrashing the Eagles took.
Why should you care

what any person thinks about your fanhood?
We are at a point in a bad season where...
Mike in Long Beach : 11/17/2014 12:44 pm : link
if you have something to do... it's acceptable to miss the game. I didn't miss it, but the season is over. If something important is happening, you should be there.

I never miss a game under any circumstances when the playoffs are in reach, but they are no longer in reach, mathematics aside.

But if you just watched for the sake of not watching, that's stupid.
If you just *didn't* watch
Mike in Long Beach : 11/17/2014 12:44 pm : link

I didn't watch much, just from Beckham's reception at the 4.
Red Dog : 11/17/2014 1:12 pm : link
I've been a GIANTS fan since 1955 but I doubt that I will be watching this team much anymore until Reese, Ross, Fewell, Quinn, and a lot of others are all history.

I simply have better things to do with my time than waste it watching an non-ompetitive football team that is run by incompetents.
Haha...
RC02XX : 11/17/2014 1:15 pm : link
I love all of the "I've been a fan since 19XX, but if this team keeps playing like this, I won't watch them anymore!"

Really? Is this a new thing or have you always been like this? If so, then I'm sure all those years without football when the Giants stunk it up must have been some great years of running errands on Sundays for you.
