Interesting Comment On Tom Coughlin and the Defense on WIP

St. Jimmy : 11/17/2014 10:33 pm
Today, Chip Kelly was getting his ass beat on Philadelphia radio. One of the callers stated that Chip doesn't care about the defense, he is all offense. Anthony Gargano went on the defensive for the Philly savior, stating Tom Coughlin is an offensive guy who won two Superbowls. He then said that Tom only meets with the defensive coordinator on Friday to discuss the defensive game plan for the game. I found it hard to believe, but that doesn't seem like a radio host would make up out of the blue. Gargano likely got this from Steve Spagnuolo. They are friends from when he was a coach in Philadelphia. I was surprised that Tom would have that little input on the defensive game plan.
I can believe it

Coughlin has been all into the offense since day 1. His fingerprints all over it.
Does TC strike you as a person who doesn't nail down everything?

He's always been meticulous. That's like his calling card. I find this hard to believe.
i agree with Nickels

I think TC's only an offensive concerned coach because he is not Xs and Os like say Belichick. I think he is like Cowher in that he has final rule on what happens on Sunday, but defers to the expert (Fewell) when it comes to calping a game plan. Part of why working under him is attractive to other assistants.

The whole disciplinarian thing is directed at the players and why he is a good coach. He WAS good at letting the thinkers think and making the players play and behave his way. Very old school approach and part of why we'll see this coaching style die in a few years.

A good example of this style of coaching working is Nick Saban. He controls Bama's D but really has no answers on O. If he gets sold on a bad game plan offensively, its not like he will grab the game plan from the OC.

got more involved on special teams when he saw how weak those units were going to be. Those units have been a plus for a month now. He is an offensive coach who is well versed with the option game so last week he helped the defense with the 2-man game, which was largely neutralized against the 49ers. Then what happened? He went up against the #2 defense in the league with Walton, Jerry & Brown, which also freaked out his QB. See where I am going with this? The boy plugging holes in the dike with his fingers. The best part of the Giants is Tom Coughlin. When he's gone his loss will be felt for years to come.
Yes, Coughlin is responsible for everthing.

0-6, 7-9 last year and
3-2, 3-7 this year

Barring a miracle finish and playoff run, time to move on.
Let me get this straight

He is at fault for not being more involved but if he got more involved due to his offensive background he would be labeled a megalomaniac control freak
he is accountabke for the success/failure of the team

All 3 phases. And the W-L record. That's the job description of an NFL head coach. Look it up.

I think after eleven years here with the Giants we can all agree Tom let's nothing to chance. He prides himself on being the leader and always takes full responsibility for his teams performance especially when it is a poor one.

I believe he let's his coordinators game plan their respective sides of the ball but in no way shape or form do I believe he doesn't go over what it is they are trying to accomplish before he gives it approval prior to game day.

Think Coughlin

has worked with Fewell on the defensive schemes but that is not his strong suit. He has always been an offensive guy. he has also always needed a good DC to succeed. We lost Spagnuolo because of success and we have not been able to replace him. Rumor is the Giants will not pay the rate for a top defensive guy like Capers or Williams. This has cost us dearly and still is.

forget it. These clowns are dying to bring in some flavor of the month so they can go on losing. And Son of Squint will oblige them because it's in his genes
I find it a hard to believe too...

I heard an interview with Eli where he was in a QBs meeting, and he was talking about how energetic TC. TC popped his head in and asked how's it going, then left.

My point, he's not spending 99% of his time with the offense/QBs.

Surely, TC is a control guy and oversees and knows everything while allowing his coordinators to do their job.....there's little doubt in my mind. But he's just not meeting on Friday to signoff on the gameplan.

this is hysterical on several levels. Do people actually believe this crap?
After the first 2 games, Spags' defense was playing really well,

so it is likely TC left him alone for the most part. Why mess with something that was working? I do find it hard to believe that he wouldn't be more involved when the unit is struggling.

I believe it. Seems to me that's what a good head coach would do.
