The Giants org has a very close connection with John Fox
jcn56 : 11/18/2014 5:11 pm : link
can't remember which of the books it was, but it was stated that they almost canned Fassel to keep Fox, but the SB in 2000 made it difficult to get rid of Fassel.

If Fox put in a good word for Del Rio, I could see them going that route. I'd rather they didn't, but I'm not doing the hiring.
I'd rather go with Todd Bowles
GMANinDC : 11/18/2014 5:24 pm : link
very aggressive DC in Arizona..considering what they lost on defesne and how they are still a force to deal with..
That'd be a weird coincidence
moespree : 11/18/2014 5:46 pm : link
If the Giants fired Coughlin and replaced him with Del Rio.
Funny
JoefromPa : 11/18/2014 5:49 pm : link
I have been thinking for years that Mangini would make a good coach. Never shared because I thought it wold be considered ludicrous on Bbi. Glad to see I m not alone.

all nicey-nice, he may, indeed, get fired so Snyder can go after Briles.
I like Bowles a lot as a DC

But there's a big difference between being a really good DC and a HC. See: Ryan, Rex.

A radical idea , hire a better gm who values offensive linemen and lb's.
Coughlin and Eli aren't the problem.

If Mara is serious about turning this around a new Gm is needed
Take a look at guys from Arizona, Seattle and SF.

The Broncos traded Cutler a full season before Tebow was ever drafted.

After Shanahan was fired, Cutler expressed his dissatisfaction and didn't want to play for the new coach, but yeah revisionist history is beautiful.

and yeah, trading Cutler looks asinine right now, doesn't it? The guy is a complete shit show with an awful contract.

Don't bother mentioning that it was McDaniels who drafted Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Knowshon Moreno, Perrish Cox, Robert Ayers, Zane Beadles, etc. in a whopping two drafts there.

Plus he was 33 years old.

Roman's a lousy OC

But to quote a famous pilot "never tell me the odds!"

I'm not in the "fire" Coughlin camp. This team has so many problems that no coach could be successful, but if you want to argue that 11 years is a long time in the NFL and it's time to move on then I think you bring in Bowles (DC Arizona) contingent upon keeping MacAdoo.
I like the idea of Bowles
Fort Mill Mike : 11/18/2014 6:43 pm : link
He played in the league, won a ring and is contending to win one as a DC. He's been around long enough on all levels that I can't imagine he couldn't transition from DC to HC with minimal issues.

That said, I hope Tom Coughlin is still the coach next season, with an improved OL and other roster upgrades.

Fangio?

Good question.
Fangio
pjcas18 : 11/18/2014 6:48 pm : link
is pushing 60. Are there many first time coaches who are > 55 years old?

Seems like a Monty Kiffin type where he's destined to be a coordinator.

Fangio is 56. Arians was older when he was hired
jeff57 : 11/18/2014 6:54 pm : link
Hell, Coughlin was older.
Coughlin
pjcas18 : 11/18/2014 6:59 pm : link
was a first time head coach in 1995, he was 47 or 48.

Arians is one, just guessing the list of first time head coaches who are over 55 for the first time they become head coaches is short.
PLEASE!!!! Gus Bradley for Perry Fewell.
Bobby Epps : 11/18/2014 6:59 pm : link
Bradley is only 48 years old and was the Seahawks DC prior to becoming HC of the Jaguars.

If Bradley becomes available, pray that the Giants dump Fewell and sign Bradley even if the Giants have to buy out Fewell's contract.

Enough mediocrity at DC- let's get a guy with a few brains in his head.
I'll put a vote in for McDaniels also
youngdavid74 : 11/18/2014 7:15 pm : link
You want to get the most out of Eli? Put him in that version of the Ernhardt - Perkins Offense.
Why would Gus Bradley leave a head coaching position to be a DC again?

What's the story with Dan Quinn?
drkenneth : 11/18/2014 7:23 pm : link

Jags record. Isn't that what this discussion is about?
Yes but I'm not sure they'd fire him after just 2 seasons.
arcarsenal : 11/18/2014 7:28 pm : link
Unless he's really on the hot seat.. I don't follow the Jags closely enough to know.
My coordinator
pjcas18 : 11/18/2014 7:30 pm : link
choices would be Bowles or McDaniels (depending if they want offense or defense).

college would be Malzahn

re-tread would be Gruden

and current HC who could be fired; I don't see a guy on that list I'd rather have over TC. I wouldn't fire him if those are the replacement candidates. Maybe if I had to pick one it would be Morrone, just seems like his team consistently plays hard as they rack up losses.
Joe Philbin
larryinnewhaven : 11/18/2014 7:31 pm : link
should be on the hotseat list too. If Miami misses the playoffs and goes 8-8 Ross will dump him.
Ron Rivera
Big_Pete : 11/18/2014 8:22 pm : link
I am surprised that Ron Rivera is not on the list.

I wonder what his odds would be.
WHAT???????
Giants2012 : 11/18/2014 8:24 pm : link
No Perry Fewell?
interesting
Big_Pete : 11/18/2014 8:26 pm : link
It is interesting that there are 10 coaches on this list and 18 potential head coaches. Of the potential head coaches, 9 have 5-1 odds or better.
don't forget intangibles when we're talking head coach......
Simms11 : 11/18/2014 8:31 pm : link
meticulous planner, intelligent, good at managing. The head coach will have a say in all aspects of the team. A good coordinator does not necessarily make a good coach.

Didn't he get two first round picks for Cutler? I'd argue that the reason the Broncos are where they are right now is because of that move.
They got
pjcas18 : 11/18/2014 8:45 pm : link
Kyle Orton, two firsts (one in 2009 and one in 2010) and a third round pick (in 2009) for cutler and a 5th.

In hindsight, I'd say that sounds like a damn good haul for the Broncos and McDaniels. Maybe he saw then what we all saw now.

I'm sure there's a reason Belichick hired him back, I mean, he's a smart guy... no?
Remember when there was such an uproar...
Britt in VA : 11/18/2014 8:55 pm : link
about Eli costing us a 1st, 3rd, and 5th?
.
Britt in VA : 11/18/2014 8:56 pm : link
Cutler: two 1sts, a 3rd, and Kyle Orton
RG3: three 1sts and a 3rd
Eli: 1st, 3rd, 5th
The Broncos are where they are because of Peyton Manning, full stop
Greg from LI : 11/18/2014 9:00 pm : link
There's a reason Joshie McDaniel was run out of town.

Belichick is Belichick because of Belichick. None of his assistants have ever been anything special.
The Broncos have a really good defense, and did...
Britt in VA : 11/18/2014 9:03 pm : link
when Manning got there.
Because John Fox is a terrific defensive coach
Greg from LI : 11/18/2014 9:05 pm : link
It's got nothing to do with McDaniel.
For whatever reason...
Britt in VA : 11/18/2014 9:06 pm : link
the Broncos have had a good defense for awhile. Good enough to win in the playoffs with Tebow.

Their defense is good.
There's a reason Peyton hand picked the Broncos.
Britt in VA : 11/18/2014 9:10 pm : link
They had a good foundation.
McDaniels started off like a house
pjcas18 : 11/18/2014 9:13 pm : link
of fire in Denver. Going 6 - 0 in his first 6 games.

including a win over the Patriots.

They finished up 8 - 8 (one of the two wins a blowout over the Giants). He didn't make it through his second season.

I think in addition to trading Cutler (which I thought was a good move then and now) he also traded Brandon Marshall which turned out to be very unpopular then and looked worse in time.

In any event, he was 33 and 34 years old.

I think his game planning on offense is some of the most creative in the game and he figures out how to make the most of his personnel.

without Gronkowski and no other real weapons the Patriots were a welker pick on aqib talib away from going to the Super Bowl.

Largely on the back of the offense.

I think Belichick is the best coach of all time, but I don't give him credit for the offensive game plan or play calling.

I'd give McDaniels a shot.

Belichick...
Britt in VA : 11/18/2014 9:14 pm : link
didn't do too hot in Cleveland. So he went back under Parcells, and then tried again with much more success.

I see McDaniels as a similar case, possibly.
I'm with you, pj...

David Shaw knows the blueprint to beating Chip Kelly's offense which is a team we have to play 2 times a year.

That blueprint must have gotten lost this year.
Did the Patriot offense miss a beat when McDaniel was in Denver?

Britt, I'd like you to specifically point out how their foundation was remotely good. What gems did Josh McDaniels leave the Broncos? That's a statement born in crap to believe he put them in a better position to get Peyton. McDaniels' drafts in 3 years only yielded Demaryus Thomas, and Eric Decker…let's not forget to mention they burned a 1st on Tebow. If anything, it was John Fox and Elway who had more to do with making Denver attractive to Peyton.

Is an excellent head coach. In many ways, he's better suited for the NFL than the NCAA.

He's my #1.
