If the Giants opt to keep Reese...

Reb8thVA : 11/19/2014 12:47 pm
which is probably likely since continuity rather than change is more often the choice in these types of uncertain situations, what specific marching orders do you think ownership lays down? Do they demand that Marc Ross be replaced, changes to the coaching staff and scouts, reevaluation of drafting and personnel philosophies? Clearly if John Mara thought the offense was broken last year, he can't but think the team is breaking down all over.

if the Giants keep Reese
andrew_nyg : 11/19/2014 1:24 pm : link
they are making a huge mistake. I supported Reese through this season and thought that he was a quality GM. I no longer believe that, and if Mara thinks that Reese is the guy who can bring in quality talent after the garbage he's placed on this roster the past 3-4 seasons, than he's a fool.

Bring in Polian, let Polian bring in his man to succeed him in 3 years, and let the rebuilding begin.
POLIAN??!?!? ARE YOU NUTS
Eli2Plax1017 : 11/19/2014 1:30 pm : link
Look, what he did in Carolina and Buffalo, amazing, but his last gig? Please, you saw what the Colts were once Peyton got hurt in 2011, that team was atrocious and Polian is off his wagon
I would be shocked if Reese is let go
Matt in SGS : 11/19/2014 1:31 pm : link
The Giants have had 3 GMs since 1979. Being GM on the Giants is like a Supreme Court appointment. Reese is not going anywhere.

I would see them replace Marc Ross for the failings in the scouting department and questionable drafts and there is a good chance Coughlin is gone. I don't see Mara cleaning house completely and letting Reese and Coughlin go. Reese will be given the opportunity to pick a new coach and re-work the scouting department.
what Matt said
JonC : 11/19/2014 1:33 pm : link
It would need to be a rather large failure for Reese to get the boot, especially given TC's age.

Polian? He's got to be pushing 80 and was the architect of the modern NFL so many of like so much less than the one we grew up with. No thanks.
LOL

@Polian comment.

He architected three franchise revivals, but yeah he left Indy in shambles when their franchise QB was injured.

who gets better after losing their 20M QB? Answer: no one
who stays the same after losing their 20M QB? Answer: no one
who gets worse after losing their 20M QB? Answer: everyone
I wouldn't consider Polian
pjcas18 : 11/19/2014 1:38 pm : link
mostly because of his age. Sorry if that's ageist.

but his work in Indy helps not hurts him.

He's going to be 72 soon and I'd prefer someone younger
.
arcarsenal : 11/19/2014 1:39 pm : link
I still have a good amount of confidence in Reese's ability to scout out talent.

And it's hard to kill the guy for FA signings that get injured. The guy doesn't have a crystal ball.

arcarsenal : 11/19/2014 1:40 pm : link
Ross, OTOH.. that's someone who needs to take the fall here.
Polian's Bills teams were high end
JonC : 11/19/2014 1:40 pm : link
they just had the misfortune of being the AFC's best during the NFC's most dominant run of great (and that's using great in an accurate sense of the word) teams.

Polian's Colts never had remotely the same type of defensive talent, or talent overall, quite frankly. It was Peyton's greatness and synergy with RW and MH that did the bulk of the damage for years. If the offense didn't get out in front, they didn't win.

According to some BBI posters lately, the answers would be the Giants to the first two questions.

I don't know if there are stats that prove this, but anecdotally the one game that sticks out in my mind was the game in 2009 mid-November where New England was up on the Colts 31 - 14 in the 4th quarter and the Colts came back to win 35 - 34. Two TD's in the last 2 and a half min.

I'm not gonna pay attention to this team until he and Coughlin are gone. Not wasting my time watching them put garbage on the field. This team is a mess and those 2 are responsible.

I think you have to differentiate between a QB who's getting $20M and a QB who's worth $20M. There's plenty of guys in the league not worth anything close to what they're getting paid.
Reese needs to go
joe48 : 11/19/2014 3:30 pm : link
Sure some of his top picks got injured but he's neglected the OL and our front seven on defense is awful. The Giants are no longer a physical team. We are manhandled up front on offense and defense.
To OP
micky : 11/19/2014 4:01 pm : link
If it's continuity protocol, then there will not be any changes from top down same scouting dept, gm, Ross, TC, and staff.

It'll be then a player over haul.
How often can you force the HC to change coordinators?
Section331 : 11/19/2014 4:14 pm : link
At what point is he responsible for his hiring choices? Hufnagel, Sheridan, KG, and Fewell and Quinn will likely be next. I seriously question TC's ability to evaluate his staff.
Another thing is that John Mara made such a show after last season
Section331 : 11/19/2014 4:16 pm : link
that he wouldn't tolerate another season like that. Well, this one appears to be worse. I cannot see both TC and Reese surviving a 6-10 season. One of them will fall on his sword.
And I'm afraid it will be Coughlin when Reese is the real problem.

Is wtf happened last year? All this hot air about the status quo being unacceptable and now here we are, right back in the same clown car situation again a few months later

Our answer last year was to blame everything on gilbride and move fwd? What a debacle: paints a scary picture that nobody upstairs has any clue what the problem is (and thus, how to fix it)
If we fire Reese ...

... do we keep Chris Mara as VP of Player Evaluation?
Marc Ross

was in charge of player personal for the Eagles. I'm told by an Eagle friend of mine that his tenure was mired in mediocrity. I've never read anything on him myself and am wondering if anyone else knows his resume.
I would think

missing the playoffs for a couple of years straight combined with an atrocious roster equals a large failure.

changes would be minimal,so your talking about a retirement party for Coughlin and not much else.I don't even think Ross would get canned.

It would be bad news for the Giants, means we are probably getting a weak head coach and bad drafts.

It was. Marc Ross's first draft pick as National Director of Scouting was Freddie Mitchell in 2001, which speaks volumes. His only good draft was 2002 which brought in Lito Sheppard, Michael Lewis, Sheldon Brown, Brian Westbrook and Raheem Brock (although he never played for the Eagles). In his tenure over 4 drafts and 30 players, 4 played in Pro Bowls for the Eagles. 3 were from the '02 draft. Only 3 were All-Pro. His record is just as mediocre in the same capacity with the Bills. From everything I see, hear and read he doesn't have a great reputation around the league. He's known as lazy, doesn't have a great eye for talent and an abrasive personality.
Reece Probably Stays

But They need to re-evaluate the Scouts Ross
is the Guy that gets replaced .
I feel that maybe Reece and TC are not on the
same page . The comment about not taking chances
downfield makes me wonder .
PF and Quinn if they are gone you Wonder if
next year is TC's last year then they blow up
the entire coaching staff .
Much will depend on how we finish I guess .
Why bring in a new OC that IMO isnt ready to
be a head coach if they fire TC .
I don't get the plan at all I don't see us

How can you have a DC that has proven time and time again to be in over his head. This defense features 7 No 1 picks, 2nd & 3rd. This is a horrific use of talent.

DO the coaches take any responsibility for failure to teach players not to defend the outside run by crashing inside. Do coaches ever take responsibility for failure to teach OL to pick up stunts. Do they ever practice how to blitz

Why has every other NFL team figured out how to use late mid rounds OL picks successfully. NE is using a Rookie C, a 5th Rd G and an UDFA G as starters and doing fine. GB has 3 4th RD players and a 7th rd player on their line.

Why do the DB have continued mis communication game after game, year after year.

The NFL today has limited practice time and you draft picks outside of the 1st rd are only there 4 years. You have to play people.

WTF is this staff doing with Moore other than wasting year 2

He does not value LB because he learned under Acorsi - he never drafted LB high either

Reese has faults, but he delivers picks in the 1st round and mostly the second. He has had zero luck with health of FA

Canty never missed a game in Dallas and got severely hurt in NY. Baas had 5 straight years on never missing a game and then could not stay healthy. Sean Locklear, Stacy Andrews, G. Schwartz, Thurmond, Jennings

behind the scenes happenings. There are several big cheeses: Reese, Ross, TC, Chris Mara, John Mara, and probably a bunch that we don't see. What is painfully obvious is that the current power structure isn't working, and some major changes need to happen. It's not as simple as saying 'diminish input/power from X'. X is then going to be a disgruntled employee, which is rarely conducive to a cohesive team. If you don't like the way X is doing things, usually the best course is to replace X, not try adjusting him. The issue is whether this group can come to consensus as to where the problem lies.

The only one that can't be replaced is John Mara, and the worst scenario is that he is backing the person who holds the most blame or is himself the person with the blame.
