NFT: ‘Bubble Boy’ Disease Cured With Stem Cells

Headhunter : 11/19/2014 3:04 pm
Just thought I'd post a story that feels good
Link - ( New Window )
I wonder if this will eventually work for a number of diseases

I wonder how precise the treatment needs to be for something like cancer.
Saw

that. Pretty incredible.
This is

fabulous. Hope for so many afflicted with this at an early age, and isn't it great to see GOOD news for a change?
Yes it is

You can't help but believe that things we think of as incurable won't be

I was going to make a seinfeld
pjcas18 : 11/19/2014 3:37 pm : link
joke, maybe something about the moops or a burned cabin and then I opened the link and saw the little girl whose life was saved and didn't feel like it.

this is great news.

Hey, I'm thrilled. No joke.

You have to applaud anytime science makes a breakthrough like this.
Just a note that this isn't embryonic stem cells that cured this

Which is true of, I believe, almost all of the successes stem cell research had brought and that no one has ever opposed this kind of stem cell research.

I had a tandem autologous (own stem cells harvested) stem-cell transplants and unfortunately (basically because of chromosome T4/14 deletion) have relapsed. The best chance, but is also very risky because Graft vs Host disease (GVHD), cure for my type of cancer, Myeloma, is an allogenic transplant (donor).

What makes my cancer tough, and as of yet no cure, is that the myeloma protein is difficult because it morphs into another form and becomes resistant to treatments or transplants. Though today, as compared to say 20 yrs ago, new treatments and novelty drugs and etc are getting closer to contain it and prolong longevity or quality of life. Hopefully, soon they'll discover a way to totally eliminate the plasma cell that programs itself to generate the cancer over and over.
micky best of luck with whichever treatment you try

I have an old high school friend with myeloma. I understand that she (yes, a she and not an African-American so she is rare(r) than most) has recently done very well though I do not know what treatment she is on as we do not correspond much.
Risky but it worked

Sounds like the "bubble" patient has such a low immune system that they actually shut/destroy it and reboot the whole system to properly create antibodies which all (most) humans have.

Wish they could reboot my son's system so his body doesn't recognize peanuts as an enemy.

As far as cancer, they've tried it using some cocktail into the lymph nodes using stem cells and (some type of identifier) so the body knows what to attack and rid the body of. The problem with some cancers though, they alter themselves and literally morph so the body doesn't identify them as an enemy and allows it to replicate itself. With tumors, the body actually defends the tumor in some cases.

Good story though and thanks for sharing.
Micky wishing you the best..

Headhunter thanks for sharing. Great story.
Great find

There is so much potential in this research. I have some very ill people in my family. Primarily my mom with M.S. and my pop with heart disease and lymphoma. When I see things like this on BBI I instantly share them with them and when we talk about it I hear the hope and optimism in their voices.

Beautiful babies and a MILF to boot.

Thanks for sharing HH.
Great story.

Many more to come, I hope.

These stories belong on BBI (and everywhere).
wonder

If they can apply that to Multiple Sclerosis? Its an autoimmune disease. That is great news! Let's hope they can figure a way to use this technology to fight other diseases!
