not even in the top 10. You should qualify your statement to Men's US Soccer or something. Even then... didnt we end up having our bus egged in '90 for an atrocious showing or was that a different WC?
jesus christ, put a fucking soccer warning on this shit

Here I was, wondering how on earth anything could possibly top Mike Eruzione's goal in the 1980 Olympics, clicking the link and I get......that. I'm sending you a bill for a new keyboard because this one is now coated in vomit.
Greg, you'll love to know that

the US-Portugal World Cup match over the summer got TWICE the TV ratings of Game One of the World Series.

(Anticipated response: "This is the signal of the downfall/pussification/etc. of America")

And I don't give a flying fuck about TV ratings or how many people pretend to like soccer now because it's some kind of hipster imperative.
The real greatest goal in American history
Greg from LI : 11/19/2014 5:51 pm : link
And it was against someone just a tad bit better at their game than Trinidad and Tobago

Well, your professed lack of interest

in TV ratings will allow you to willfully ignore the fact that soccer is infinitely more than the domain of "hipsters."
Ok, ok I goofed.

I thought placing Paul Caliguri in the subject would "warn" everyone it was meant to be a soccer related.
Because non - soccer fans know who the hell Paul Calgary is

Of course!
In other news tonight,

MLS held the Chivas USA dispersal draft this afternoon.

With the 1st pick FC Dallas took GK Dan Kennedy (hold the jokes please). With the 2nd pick NYCFC took 20 year old MF Matthew Dunn. RBNY passed.

I've hated plenty of things because of the fans that like them, and have mostly tried to get over that. Dismissing soccer for some social hang-up will only keep you from missing out, but that's ok if you're ok with it. My college roommate was from London, and I'm up at 7:30 each weekend to catch the games now. In a year where the Yankees, Knicks, and Giants aren't delivering much, thank God for the EPL. To each their own.
Well you have to admit the TV ratings thing was very Joe'ish
MetsAreBack : 11/19/2014 6:58 pm : link

Comparing a 6pm sunday game of a national team that only gets showcased once every 4 years and has essentially a 3-game season against a 9pm tuesday night annual game featuring Kansas City and San Francisco.... odd to say the least.

But hey at least we can all agree neither holds a candle to the NBA! Did you know they were on tape delay in the early 80s?
yeah, what an amazing accomplishment

USA! USA! USA!
Soccer is boring
blapre74 : 11/20/2014 8:20 am : link
American TV will never give those midgets a contract. BTW, basketball, by the statistics, is more popular in the world than soccer. and you can look it up. Greg, I agree this thread should have a qualifying title. :)
Only interesting soccer is watching my 3.5 year old playing it

with other 3-4 year olds. Now that's comedic gold.

At least you guys didn't refer to it as football.

And, we've established that Kim Kardashian's ass is more popular than all the pro sports combined. I wonder when we're going to get ESPN Culo.
If soccer is boring, then the NFL is a coma
Go Terps : 11/20/2014 9:03 am : link
At least when I watch a soccer match I don't have to sit through the same commercials every two minutes, or NFL players telling me "No More" like I'm the league that hires players that beats their wives and kids. Go fuck yourselves already with your BS campaigns and take a look in the mirror.

And as far as soccer goals go, Caliguri's IS as or more important than any in US history. Without it they don't qualify for the '90 World Cup. Without that, World Cup '94 probably doesn't go as well as it did. A lot of people don't realize it, but the 1994 World Cup is viewed as an enormous success in the rest of the world; better probably than every World Cup since.

That was some pretty shitty defending

So are you basing soccer being fun and NFL being boring based on the commercials? Or the actual actions on the field? The commercial piece is probably result of the popularity of football over soccer as seen by the networks and NFL, which they are capitalizing for more profit.

I don't know about that. In countries where soccer is all encompassing they have not found ways to create a million commercial breaks. The structure of the game continues to drive the way it is covered by television.

The NFL however has crammed in every opportunity for the viewer could spend three minutes hearing about how they should drink crappy beer, eat crappy pizza, get an erection, not beat their wives, etc. Over time they've allowed the television priorities to change how the game is actually played on the field.
everyone! everyone!

Look at me! I don't like soccer! Did you hear me? I don't like soccer! I will come on every soccer thread to tell you it sucks!
and this is different
MetsAreBack : 11/20/2014 9:30 am : link
than certain people telling us how watered down the NFL product is on every related topic? Or a certain someone on every baseball thread to unsolicited volunteer how bad the ratings were last night while also reminding us that the NBA used to be on tape delay?

To each their own. Obviously football and soccer dont have to bow down to anyone or anything when it comes to popularity - clearly soccer the most popular worldwide, with football dominating the US and growing globally.

I will say that its not like soccer doesnt have its breaks/lulls even without commercials, if it didnt the refs wouldnt be adding ~5 minutes to halves. And that doesnt even count when defensemen are passing it back and forth to each other without trying to move the ball upfield

Yeah...I agree about the flow of action on soccer is not conducive to a lot of commercial breaks while a football game is. And NFL and the networks have definitely taken advantage of it to make the most money possible. However, and this is just my opinion (grew up watching a lot of soccer because of my parents) but I've found soccer to be fairly boring compared to football.

But Game One of the World Series got lower ratings than a regular season Sunday NFL game.

BTW - The amazing thing about the Eruzione goal is that the game wasn't even broadcast live.

Both soccer and hockey are on an upswing, but the commercial laden NFL still rules.
Of course soccer has lulls
Go Terps : 11/20/2014 9:41 am : link
Every sport does. You're not guaranteed a good game, and like any other sport there are plenty of bad ones (the team I support in Spain is awful, and has been goal-starved for years now...it sucks).

When it's good, football can be as good as anything you'll ever see on TV. But the game is so chopped up, and you feel it either watching on TV or being in the stadium. It's not just the ads either...the rules have been tweaked so much and the refs are constantly involved. Now time is taken to automatically review scoring plays and turnovers...there's just a lot of non-football happening when you're watching a football game. And during the non-football you're often bombarded with irrelevant or unrelated material.

It sucks because a good football game is as good as anything, and the players now are better than they've ever been. The product on TV or at the stadium should be better than it's ever been, and most people seem to agree that it isn't.
Agree too many lulls in football
MetsAreBack : 11/20/2014 9:44 am : link
still dont understand why scoring plays and turnovers are automatically reviewed - thats supposed to be what the challenge flags are for, and the reason why they used to be so precious. Now with those taken out of the equation, coaches often challenge for half a yard spot or something silly.

But its still a great game and a lot better use of my time on a sunday afternoon than what I'd otherwise be doing.
