My take on what needs to be fixed

DaveW : 11/19/2014 8:59 pm
For starters, I have read a LOT of posts here over this season, and I agree with most of you, and not so much with others. Regardless, I have definitely enjoyed our little community (long may it flourish).

So, here's my opinion.

The QB is not the problem. The head coach is not the problem. I reserve judgement on the coordinators and position coaches, except to say that they have all been successful in the past, and they probably have not forgotten how to coach, so I doubt that they are the root of the problem. That's not to say that a little tweaking here and there wouldn't hurt.

The significant problem is player talent. Upon who's feet does this fall? Keep in mind that there are many people on an NFL team who have a say in this (to varying degrees). We all have our opinions about who needs to be sent to the gallows. Quite frankly I don't have any insight into the inner workings of the process to form an opinion. However the problem may not just be individual payer evaluations, but may also be an overall philosophy about the kind of player (character wise) who should be on the team. This may need to be tweaked as well.

Some of you have made the point that a complete overhaul is unnecessary, and that the Giants may be just a handful of players away from being competitive. I lean in this direction myself, and I'll bet that the owner and most of the front office believe this as well.

It's not ONE THING!

It's a cluster f*ck of players running wrong/bad routes, receivers dropping balls, balls that shouldn't have been thrown, poor blocking, poor play calling/design, penalties, mistakes, bad coaching/preparedness, etc. It's a merry-go-round of faux pas, that take turns falling off......
I agree that it is many things

however, i feel the most glaring problem is a lack of talent.
this is so for a variety of reasons. the team needed a rebuild in 2012, esp the oline. I read a comment that it seemed the core was kept together a year too long to try to make a run at the met life superbowl. with the countdown clock and all that it seems somewhat possible.

I believe the drafting was def a problem from 08-12, but i think the organization self corrected, to a degree a few years back. the last few years have been more solid drafts. more football players, less "athletes" so from that standpoint, i hope they are on the right track. they seem to rebuilding a young, solid core again.

as a side note, we have gotten very unlucky with career ending injuries to what could be classified as core players.

of all the coordinators, i feel gilbride was the last one that should have resigned. Fewel has never put together a dominating unit. his defense has generally been bottom 1/3 or worse. every year. I think there is more talent on D this year, then it has displayed. i don't like his style of D, and i don't think it works in the new NFL. You have to be aggressive and try to disrupt the offense, and wreak havoc. the bend but don;t break, don't give up big plays at all cost is not viable. A good offense has the advantage in the game now. moving down the feild is not as hard as it once was. I like that the D gets INTs, and is generally good in the RZ but it doesn't force fumbles, certainly doesn't recover them. doesn't stop the run, gives up long 3rd downs regularly. doesn't generate pressure. terrible at blitzing. doesn't use personell creatively. 3 safties is nice and has it's place. Nascar is a leftover from 4 aces. I feel like JPP should be moved around the line. kennard and moore can rush the passer. . . find a spot for them to do that

Every year with the simplification gets old. guess what. . . practice time is limited, and players change teams more often. the defense should be able to be digested by who you got.

Quinn. . . don't get me started. Pictures. he must have pictures
The HC and his staff is the problem

when they hang onto guys not doing their job too long...If somebody is constantly fucking up, then hold them accountable and put their ass on the bench...they keep saying next man up, but never live by it. Put players in position to utilize their strengths...be flexible...go with the hot hand.
If Dallas embarrasses the giants sunday night..

...nobody is safe. Maras blood will boil if that happens on prime time on the national stage against that team...in fact I doubt anything matters henceforth more than the cowboy game. I think this next game could save Coughlin and much of his staff, or perhaps could be the straw that breaks it apart. The Mara's history with Dallas is well known.

and replace them with whom? It's a great idea, but they have a severe lack of talent on this roster, especially at OL, DL, LB and S
How about the positional coaches coaching the talent

??? How come that is never questioned? Tell me who has improved on this team? Other teams pluck players off their practice squad, insert into lineup and they play well. At some point, TC's staff has to be questioned for their coaching techniques.
Everyone harps on the talent level

I really thought the defense would be a strength this year because of who they brought in. You had a secondary loaded with seasoned pros who know how to play the game and they were suddenly being touted as one of the better secondaries going into the season. Collectively they played like a bunch of rookies at times constantly blowing coverages, blowing assignments, and giving up a lot of third and long first down conversions.

Now I ask you why is that? Early on in the preseason Carl Banks felt good about the linebacking situation more so then he has in years. Especially felt Kennard was the real deal and would make an impact. I guess it didn't help he was dinged early on. And as far as Moore is concerned why have him on the roster Perry if you aren't going to give him a consistent chance to see if he can be an impact player. That's all we heard all preseason. Then he makes one mistake against Dallas and your guess is as good as mine. Is he on the field. Sometimes. But not very often. But he sure can block punts.

Fewell in my mind has got to go. And Jerry Reese needs to add a couple more studs to the offensive line or he will also be looking for a new quarterback because if he doesn't get his shit together he's going to get Eli killed and then that will be another story.
agree

that talent deficiencies are a major factor. our linebackers, offensive line, running back depth, receivers, defensive line have all been exposed and our secondary has been decimated by injuries.

coughlin and Eli are a smaller PART of the problem but nevertheless still part of the total equation of what's wrong with the team. the team's focus, attention to detail and preparation have been exposed in different games this year (arizona, philly, SF and seattle) which falls on the coaching staff. eli has had some good games, some mixed games and three stinkers - he's not going to be able to escape pressure from a weaker line by using his legs. he needs a stout running game and a top notch offensive line to be successful. they are both capable of winning if the right pieces are in place
Agree with last poster

Eli could win with super o line and a good running game. But he's less effective when he doesn't have either. I know we're going to stick with Eli, but personally wish we had a quicker, more agile, mobile QB who ran for first downs and when pressured ran around and extended the play and found someone open. The pocket passers, Brady and Peyton seem to me to be a little quicker and move their feet a little better than Eli. Because he's won 2 super bowls and has been a stalwart presence for so many years, he's going to remain our QB so let's hope we draft the two best o lineman ever drafted.
