Our Last Two Super Bowl Teams

billyboy26 : 11/20/2014 11:17 am
I know it seems daunting to think about the amount of holes we need to fill. In actuality, it is not as many as you think.

Take our last two Super Bowl teams. We had guys like Boss at TE. We had guys like Blackburn at LB. We had guys like Aaron Ross at CB. These are not world beater players. Frankly, at those respective positions, we might have better talent now. We just need to get healthy.

What we had was a clutch QB/leader, a great offensive line, and a really strong pass rush. That is it.

We still have the money QB. We need the offensive line. I really believe if Cruz comes back (or we grab someone in free agency to compliment OBJ), we can get quickly back to the playoffs just by fixing the offensive line. But really fixing it with maulers. Not second rate, low draft flyers. Maulers. Reese needs to go get them. End of story.

On defense I love what I see from Ayers. Love what I see from Kennard. Love what I see from Moore. JPP will be gone if he wants too much money. Bye, he's soft.

But dont think this team cannot be fixed relatively quick. It could. And it starts with the ripple affect of a strong OL on the running game, on Eli, and how it opens up the passing game.
We also had very good receivers (Plax, Toomer, NIcks, Cruz)

I agree with you about getting healthy. You can't ignore the amount of injuries this year and last. This is why I feel everyone comes back, except Ronnie Barnes maybe....?
I think losing 10 games

This year would be the best thing for this franchise. Would set us up with a Top 10 pick, and with early picks in the 2nd-4th rounds, we could get a ton of value. You go LB, S, OL, DL in the draft. HARD. Then sign 2-3 guys and I really think it could be a quick fix (provided Cruz comes back close to what he was).

OBJ has the potential to be better than all of those WR's...and by a large margin. We'll see how healthy Cruz is next season when he returns from his injury but I would consider our current receiving about the furthest thing from our biggest need.
Those teams

had dominate defensive Lines so it made up for lack of athleticism at LB and lack of talent at the corners...

2007 had Aaron ross and Webster as the starting Corners, say what you want about Ross but he played very well in those playoffs...They had AP has the QB of that defense and Mitchell who wasnt the most gifted but he was a very very smart LB and then they had a dominate DL...then on offense they had a legit Number 1 receiver, a great possession guy in Toomer that Eli relied on and an up and coming 3rd down guy in Steve Smith who was agreat route runner, they had a very good Running game with Jacobs and a young tough Bradshaw in the playoffs...their offensive Line kept Eli upright and mauled people in the running game...

2011...Again Dominate DL with smart LBs, not the most Athletic LBs but they were smart Blackburn came off the street and immediately knew the defense, Boley was smart and was their best LB he could get guys lined up...then you had Webster and Ross again at the corners and were helped by the dominate DL....Grant and Rolle in the secondary with Philips really helped on the back end...Offensively their Running game sucked but they had a very very talented WR trio, Nicks dominate WR at that point, Cruz couldnt be stopped in the slot and Manningham that big catch guy....Thei OL werent maulers but they kept Eli upright...

agree on all points. But you cannot tell me a healthy Prince and DRC are not as good, if not better than our corners for both championships.

My point is less about who is better. More about that we really dont have holes at every position. We have solid players. Look at RB. You give Jennings some OL help and he's a beast. Guy can run.

On the WR front, yes we had Plax and Toomer, then Cruz and Nicks. But you cannot tell me when health OBJ and Cruz cannot be as good as Cruz and Nicks.

We need an OL, and we need health.
I feel like I'm just banging my head against the wall at this point,

but the 2011 team did not have a good, forget great, OL. IN ANY CAPACITY.

They gave up more pressures on the QB than any other team and their run blocking was largely not good during the regular season.

Frankly, they stunk and it's insulting to what Manning/Nicks/Cruz/Manningham accomplished that people keep revisioning history to fit narratives.

We needed OL talent back in 2009. By 2011 it was a fucking disaster. The OL issue isn't a recent phenomenon, as you said.

Did we not have Diel, Snee, Booth, and Mckenzie in 2011?

Did we not have blocking TE's in Pascoe or Ballard? Did we not have blocking running backs in Ahmad Bradshaw?

You cannot compare today's collection of talent to those guys, both at RB protection, OL line protection and TE protection.

Fixing both lines
gmen9892 : 11/20/2014 12:09 pm : link
Has such butterfly effect. Better DL cures the secondary and LB issues. Better OL improves the running game as well as the passing game.
Diehl and McKenzie were horrific in 2011.
Riggies : 11/20/2014 12:12 pm : link
Snee wasn't exactly great either.

Ballard was never a good blocker. Pascoe wasn't exactly Bavaro either.

Bradshaw, however, absolutely was a beast in pass pro. Jacobs was really solid too.

I'm not really sure what your point is, given all that. You can recognize it sucked then and that it still sucks now, probably even worse (if Brown and Jerry are both playing) -- the difference being that Eli isn't playing stone cold out of his mind consistently (not his fault or a criticism) and the skill players aren't a fraction of good as they were then to at least attempt to mask the stench the same way.

Pretty much all those guys were at the end of their primes and should have been replaced. I don't think McKenzie played after 2011 because no one wanted him. Our line was terrible that year. Booth was average and Baas played okay when he was healthy, but that line was bad.
