NFT: Nevada Assembly to be headed by racist/misogynist/homophobe/

manh george : 11/20/2014 9:00 pm
This is gonna be fun. I guess it's political, but in a pretty narrow sense. One of the key reasons the Republicans did so well in 2014 is because they avoided wackos. Well, not entirely. The imminent head of the Nevada Assembly has written a newspaper column for 11 years where he:

--Claimed that the Oklahoma City bombing was engineered by the Clinton Administration to generate sympathy;

--Called blacks simple minded darkies

--Claimed that the gay community is rife with pederasts

--Wanted women back out of the military, except for a few narrow jobs.

--Claims that local Hispanics are still supporters of Mexico.

--Suggested that

He has already been elected speaker of the Republican majority 2015 Nevada Assembly. WTF are they thinking?

I am afraid to find out

Who lives in his district, though one or two BBI members currently on the West Coast are probably looking at real estate....
There are plenty of wackos in both parties
BillT : 11/20/2014 9:23 pm : link
Have you checked out any Sheila Jackson Lee or Maxine Waters quotes recently.
the "simple minded darkies"
Les in TO : 11/20/2014 9:25 pm : link
comment was his view on how democrats view African Americans, not necessarily his own view, but yeah he's put some pretty terrible opinions down in that column.

No reasonable explanations allowed. Please.
BillT, no doubt there are wackos in both parties.
manh george : 11/20/2014 9:31 pm : link
However, when you vote one of them to be Speaker of the State Assembly, that's a little different. I do not believe there are equivalents elsewhere from either party voted to head a branch of the state legislature--at least none who make a public record of their level of wackiness in a newspaper column, or even a series of public speeches.
Not exactly "elected"
Rob in NYC : 11/20/2014 9:40 pm : link
But the Democratic Party's acknowledgement of Al Sharpton as a legitimate candidate on more than a few occasions doesn't exactly suggest a full consideration of his history.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion

Yeah...
manh george : 11/20/2014 9:52 pm : link
Sharpton is probably close, but he's an "advisor," not the elected head of a state legislature.

I'm personally hoping that Sharpton helps make DeBlasio a one-term mayor--that won't be easy in NYC. They actually have to find a Republican candidate. Bloomberg was a fluke.

Neverthless, they actually elected this guy as their leader, and even conceding the "darkie" statement had an alternate meaning, the other stuff is pretty crazy.
And Jesse Jackson was a candidate for the nomination...
Dunedin81 : 11/20/2014 9:54 pm : link
and Charlie Rangel's idiotic assertion that "tea party cracker" should be received as an honorific. But let's not mince words, the hard right has an issue with race that the left does not.
Politics aside
Rob in NYC : 11/20/2014 9:54 pm : link
DiBlasio just seems in way beyond his abilities.

+1 all around, unfortunately.
Look up
pjcas18 : 11/20/2014 9:58 pm : link
Michael Peroutka, people elect candidates sometimes because of their party or because their opponent stinks without even knowing what the candidate stands for or their point of view on important issues.

It is probably more common than you think.
Rob, yeah.
manh george : 11/20/2014 10:00 pm : link
But he is tall.

The only way NYC government can work anywhere close to optimally is with a Republican counterweight to the very leftist city counsel. The NY Republican party is just so weak, though, that they can't put up a decent candidate.

Absent that, competence would be nice.
My point, and the author's seems to be missing their mark.
manh george : 11/20/2014 10:06 pm : link
Yes, people elect wackos, especially at the local level. And they nominate wackos, which is where Jackson, Sharpton, et al fit in. When a branch of the state legislature makes one their leader, they do it with full knowledge--or at least one hopes they do.

Silver, head of the NY Assembly is a sleaze of the lowest order, and probably invulnerable unless he gets arrested. But not so nutty as this.
Only one or two members are looking into NV real estate?
kickerpa16 : 11/20/2014 10:08 pm : link
...
Are you familiar with Peroutka?
pjcas18 : 11/20/2014 10:14 pm : link
If this guy doesn't fit your definition of wacko I don't know who does.

Quote:
He says “so-called civil rights laws” are not valid because “there is no such thing as a civil right.” He says promoting evolution “is an act of disloyalty to America.” He says of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, “The reason he hates God is because he thinks he is God.” He thinks gay people are out to “recruit your children” into their “deathstyle.”

Quote:
Remarkably for someone who has just become an elected official in Maryland, Peroutka argues that since state legislators have passed laws like marriage equality that “violate God’s law,” the Maryland General Assembly is “no longer a valid legislative body” and none of the laws that it has passed are “legally valid and legally enforceable.”

Michael Peroutka - ( New Window )
Mg - agree that getting elected by a relatively unaware
Rob in NYC : 11/20/2014 10:18 pm : link
Electorate is very different than being elected by a group of supposedly well-informed peers. However, disagree on Silver - I think there is chance he could retain his position from jail.
I don;t know why this isn't clear.
manh george : 11/20/2014 10:22 pm : link
Yes, Peroutka is a nut. There are lots of nuts in local public offices such as his. Left and right, black or white racist, mysogynist and homophobe. None of them were voted by their fellow legislators to be among the top three most powerful persons in their state, which is what the Speaker of the Assembly is in Nevada.
he hasn't been elected
pjcas18 : 11/20/2014 10:27 pm : link
yet
You are correct.
manh george : 11/20/2014 10:31 pm : link
Nominated with no apparent competition.

Not elected.

This is from the state that keeps electing Harry Reid...

Yet it is hard to believe he got elected never mind nominated unopposed to Assembly Speaker. Maybe when California falls into the Pacific, Nevada will be dragged with it.;-p

If you do it with the attitude that the politicians on either side of the isle are batshit crazy.

Notice no personal attacks on this thread. If there were, it would have been gone long ago.
Yeah
manh george : 11/21/2014 9:24 pm : link
To me this wasn't about politics per se. It was/is about politics going off the rails. Batshit crazy isn't party specific.

For the greater good of the State of Nevada and the cause I support it is necessary for me to withdraw as Speaker Designee. The tens of thousands of people who both read my columns and listened to my radio shows through two decades in the media know this has been a carefully orchestrated attack to remove a conservative Republican from a major leadership role in State government. The deliberate character assassination and the politics of personal destruction have totally distorted my views and record. Ultimately, this whole attack has very little to do with my views. The powers that be are planning a massive, more than one billion dollar, tax increase and I stood in the way as Speaker. I have already served two terms as an Assemblyman without any of these vicious attacks. It was only when I had risen to leadership that this smear campaign occurred. That is the real reason for this and it is vital the public understands that.

From a normally sensible guy, this is a pretty off-base post. The right has no "issue" with race. The whole point of conservatism is to treat people individually, on their merits. The whole point of liberalism, by contrast, is to divvy people up by race, foster jealousy and resentment, and profit electorally. From Eric "my people" holder to Barack "if I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon" Obama, the Democrats play the race card from the bottom of the deck every day and twice on Sunday.
The left does have a issue with race
buford : 11/24/2014 6:22 am : link
If there is a black conservative, they are called the most viscous names. Uncle Tom, House N. Traitor to their race, etc.

There are loons on both sides, but it does seem that the entire basis of the Dem party now, the establishment part of the party, is about race, gender, income and sex. As lawguy said, they use these tactics to divide people.
