Great guitarist. Wails on that video & was easily 1 of the 2 or 3 best Super Bowl shows. Linked is a 67 minute video of a @ Capitol Theatre, Passaic 1/30/82 show. Video quality is poor, but otherwise it's great. Prince @ Capitol Theatre, Passaic 1/30/82. - ( New Window )
Is that venue the same one that Warren Zevon played....
at a Guitar Center that was closing down. USA made Gibson for like $420 (20% off because store was closing), and it plays and sounds great. I think stores are clearing out their inventory of these and you can get them for less than $500, still an insanely good price. I recommend them if you ever wanted an SG.
is the poor availability of his live music due to his concerted effort to take everything down. His versatility is nearly unparalleled and it's too bad you don't have videos of, say, his bands' jazz or blues jams.
I know Hendrix is usually the benchmark but I put Stevie Ray Vaughn and yeah, I'll say it, Prince RIGHT there.
I love how Harrison Jr loves Prince's solo and how Prince always plays it up to him! Cool interchange. I'm ALMOST making the convert from bass to guitar...Almost!

Nothing controversial about that opinion -- a lot of very well-regarded guitarists likely feel the same way.
At that caliber it pretty much comes down to subjective elements and what moves or impresses you the most. Sure, whatever, Prince is probably not going to be able to give a dissertation about the Lydian Chromatic Concept. But you're not going to find a lot of truly meaningful stuff about music that he doesn't know or understand.

Plus Prince playing every instrument on several of his albums leads me to believe that his abilities are probably in the genius area.
A number of heavy metal bands love them and collaborate with them on stage.
Quote:
"The story of these two Mexican guitarists reads like a novel. Rodrigo and Gabriela, two heavy metal fans, lovers on stage and off, ditched their teenage dreams and their electric guitars to go in a dramatic new direction. They got one-way tickets to Europe and set off on an acoustic road trip which began on the streets of Dublin. They started performing and their shows caught on like wildfire. On stage, nothing can stop these two fireballs. They mix the dexterity of jazz with the trash metal riffs of their early years, and throw in Latin rhythms for good measure. He and she are two sides of the same coin, a coin made of intuition, talent and charisma. Whether they are collaborating with Metallica, Rage Against the Machine or an Afro-Cuban orchestra, they always mix complicity with technical complexity, communicating through the instruments which they bring to life during their concerts."
Full concert linked. Check out around 14:00. Btw, as the second guitarist who does the complex rhythms while also doing melodic counterpoint to the lead, she is pretty much unique in the world. She has to ice her hands after every show to keep them from swelling.

Hehe... I was 13 yrs old playing bass and I kept playing the guitar parts instead. So finally, bought a 6 string.
Yeah, I really only dig a lot of movement around the neck which sometimes parallels the lead anyway plus I'd like to be able to strum chords.
Somebody teach me quick?
There's no getting around it: guitar is a lot harder than bass. Any bassist who says otherwise is just being weird about it.
I'd give Rocksmith a look-see if I were you. I'm not sure how effective it is for a total beginner, but if you already play bass you're actually not quite like a total beginner. Plus, playing bass on it is really freaking fun. Distractingly so in my opinion -- it's sometimes just so much fun that you find yourself neglecting the guitar bits.
RE: Speaking of accoustic, How about Rodrigo Y Gabriella?

Yep good call. Such an interesting duo. And she plays so, SO percussively that it literally beats the shit out of her hands (well specifically her right hand). I love these guys.
at either Outside Lands or one of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festivals in SF, and I just remember thinking that those two must practice the shit out of their instrument.
Some people just play their instrument as if they were locked in a prison cell with it and nothing but it for 5 years. Most people I know -- hell, probably most famous musicians -- just don't have that level of insane dedication to practice.
He's definately still rocking. Just released a new album.

I do like Tom Petty also he is cool
I just purchased one of the new 2015 Les Paul guitars, the double cutaway model, in natural burst.
Thing is quite nice. Thinking about getting a custom pickguard made for it though... kind of annoyed they did without it.
It's still got Harrison in it... Dhani's playing.

Sweet! I was thinking of starting a gear thread, soon. I'm still dialing in my new 335!

That is flippin sweet.
And Prince Rocks. Always has.
Nice... that beard must be hella uncomfortable.
Yeah he is from Jackson NJ.
