NFT: Tip recommendation. Having a new boiler installed today.

Danny Kanell : 11/22/2014 9:41 am
BBI tip threads are always entertaining. Wanted to get some opinions. I have 2 guys installing a new boiler in my house today. Not an easy job bc it's in my crawlspace. What would be an appropriate tip for each guy? It's about an 8 hour job (cost of the job is $5K). I'm thinking $40-$50 each. Too light? Too much?

Thanks
That seems about right

First I've ever heard of tipping guys to install a boiler. Aren't you paying for the installation?
I would probably give...
thomasa510 : 11/22/2014 9:48 am : link
$10 to $20 each. But really have no idea what would be normal.

Yes, I hear ya but these guys are employees and like to throw guys that do work in my house a few bucks. This is an all day job in my crawlspace.
Unless the guys doing the installation own the business

I would tip them.
How about a 6 pack for each?

they are professionals doing their job. You tip waiters and delivery people. Insulting to tip professionals. Try tipping your doctor next time.
I wouldn't tip in that situation.

Offer them a drink or whatever, but that's it. Where do you draw the line?
If you're having renovations done, do you tip every guy who is subcontracted? Plumbers, painters, electricians, roofers? No you pay them for the job as contracted. In fact you're paying a huge amount for the labor.
30 each is cool

I always tip people who work on my house
To be clear, I'm big on tipping....
Crispino : 11/22/2014 11:03 am : link
people who provide a regular service during the holidays. Mail carrier, paper delivery etc. And I always round up from 20% on a meal.
I just don't think you tip tradesmen.
20% each

So, that would be about 2 Grand total.
This is one of those borderline situations

Not the type of service where I would automatically tip. However if something about my homes layout made for an unusually hard install and/or they were nice guys who were hard working with good attitudes about it I could see where I might end up giving them a tip. Basically I think this one falls under a case by case basis for me.
Any dead bodies in the crawl space ?

If there are, then you need to buy their silence.
If not, no tip - they are professionals.

^This. In particular, would go with the difficulty of the job (if they're carefully dragging an extremely heavy unit to avoid any damages to your property, they earned an extra something). Otherwise, they're skilled labor, even if they're employees they're not really dependent on tips to make a living.
Thanks guys

They did a good job. I went with $40 each. They seemed appreciative. Solid guys as well.
I don't think I'd tip them
mrvax : 11/22/2014 3:45 pm : link
They are professionals. Do you tip your plumber too? Where does it end? I'd tip folks delivering things b/c I know they make very little and it's really not a professional job, meaning anyone could learn the job in an hour.

I always tip the installers, usually about $20.
