NFT: Islanders - Penguins 7pm Game Thread

pganut : 11/22/2014 3:30 pm
Well, last night was fun, then tense, then fun again after the skills competition. I'm gonna suggest we just put a bullet in 'em early to keep the drama level low.

Same lineup for the Islanders with Halak in net. Pens looking to be doing the same, with Greiss in net instead of the wilted flower.

Tonight is Billy Smith mini-locker night, and old 31 will be on hand. Cappy had Battlin' Billy address the team at the morning skate and showed the team a highlight video so they could appreciate Smith’s play. Capuano said Smith’s address to his players really “enlightened” the team. Let's see if it has any effect.

A couple of Staple tweets relating to Grabner:
Quote:
Grabner did not skate today. Capuano says they'll know more on Monday. Not looking like he'll be ready before Thanksgiving.

Don't believe Grabner not skating today meant a setback. Just a guy who missed all of training camp. No need to rush him back.

Some stats to tide you over:
- Ryan Strome is 1st in NHL in points-per-60 at 5v5 (minimum 100 minutes) after his 3-pt night vs. PIT. Next closest is Voracek at 3.78. Noteworthy on the D, Nick Leddy at 1.97 is second in the NHL for d-men.
- Leddy scored his 5th goal, just two shy of his career high. The Isles’ defense already has 11 goals this season after tallying only 23 last season.
- Big change from last season: Isles are 7-0-0 when leading after 2 periods.
- The Isles have now outscored the opposition 8-2 in second periods over the last five games. The Isles have allowed only 2 second period goals in the last seven games.
- The Isles are 7-5-0 when they score first and are 6-1-0 when they allow the opening goal.
- Last night's win was the fourth of 11 consecutive games against the Eastern Conference. The Isles are 3-1-0 in this stretch, which includes upcoming home/home series with Washington and Ottawa.
- Other than the St. Louis Blues, the Islanders are the only NHL team with two goalies possessing 5 or more wins.
- Last night was the first time since the playoff-clinching win on April 23, 2013 (at Carolina) that the Isles did not allow an opposition power play. It’s the first time in at least 25 years that Pittsburgh has not had a power play vs. the Isles.
- The Isles have killed 22 of 24 penalties over the last seven games after they allowed 6 power play goals in 14 times short over the previous five games.
- Phil Bourque on Penguins radio, describing the Kulemin goal: “Holy, Moly. Those were two good defensemen that (Kulemin) just abused.”

It's the power and the glory
It's a war in paradise
It's a cinderella story
On a tumble of the dice

Welcome back JT
KWhite2250 : 11/22/2014 9:38 pm : link
Thanks to the garth for getting us B level players like Leddy and Boychuk!!

Im positive we wont get a driveby tonight but what can you expect of a pens/rags fan?
Boys, that was an ass-whipping.
pganut : 11/22/2014 9:38 pm : link
Looking at the last 48 hours (and the way the year has started leading into this), I think that we can agree that there has been a message sent. This is a different team.

Ders, star #3; JT, star #2; Matty Marts #1 star.

What a great weekend for us. Very proud of this team.
Fucking awesome!
NYMase : 11/22/2014 9:41 pm : link
Great win and sweep of the home and home...Nice to see JT back

Also nice to see the composure of this hockey team. This has been such a fun season so far
Although he didn't get a star
Mike in NY : 11/22/2014 9:47 pm : link
Visnovsky had a heck of a game
Tell you what
pganut : 11/22/2014 9:49 pm : link
Since his rib injury earlier on, Hammer has been very quiet. Not tonight. Especially at the end, banging and thumping with passion. If we see the return of the #3 we know, it makes things even better.
.
Danny Kanell : 11/22/2014 10:03 pm : link
This team is fucking awesome right now. First place. LGI!
Was at the game tonight
Metnut : 11/22/2014 10:21 pm : link
love this a team so much. Was drinkng at champions since 4 and the atmosphere was electric. This year is a long time coming!

Im going again on Wednesday too and I hope we keep things rolling.
This has been a real solid start to the season
The 12th Man : 11/22/2014 10:22 pm : link
They played great tonight. JT played awesome tonight. Strome has really impressed me the past few weeks. Last year we all said needed a goalie another Guy on D and A forward and we would be a playoff team. Well we got 2 DMen and 2 real good Forwards. Look at us now you Ranger bitches!
eh...sounds like it was a boring game
feelflows : 11/22/2014 10:43 pm : link
On an exciting note, I saw Brendan Kichton score a PP goal tonight!!
I believe they officially put an end
5J : 11/22/2014 11:35 pm : link
To any of the November meltdown worries.
7 games against the leagues best teams pitt, tama, LA, anaheim
5J : 11/22/2014 11:39 pm : link
5-2 record in those games.
We've played a ton
Metnut : 11/23/2014 12:03 am : link
road games so far. Now is our chance to do some damage at home.
just watched on dvr... dinner with fam
Dave M : 11/23/2014 12:09 am : link
This is possibly my favorite game of the year thus far. I LOVE JOHNNY BOYCHUCK!!! Talk about stepping it up. This guy showed another level in terms of stepping up effort wise in a big game. He showed something we haven't seen on this team in the past. A level beyond your regular game. He is a guy who's won a stanley cup, who's seen it, been there. He wanted this game so bad tonight. That's what I saw and that is huge for this team. I'm not selling anyone else short because that was an awesome team game bUT I officially love Boychuk.
funny what happens when we have a defense worth a shit
islander1 : 11/23/2014 12:27 am : link
I mean I almost regret giving Snow credit, but if Boychuk re-signs...

Downie is one of the five biggest pieces of shit in the NHL.
one more thing I want to add
islander1 : 11/23/2014 12:31 am : link
from a pure hockey standpoint, the shit Malkin does is really unbelievable. If yo gave me the choice of Crosby or Malkin to start a team, I'd take Malkin.

Of course, I'd take Tavares over both, but just saying...
Had commitment tonight and just finished watching the game
marbles : 11/23/2014 12:38 am : link
What else can be said about the game that has not been said already. They put the wood to the Penguins. The fourth line comes through again. At this rate, Grabner will get a lot more rest before he comes back.

They were physical and forechecked the living crappie out of Pittsburgh. A big f*ck you to November slumps. This team is pretty good.

Now I understand this win comes with an asterisk since they beat a back up goalie because no way would the Isles score four again Fleury. Oh wait.
Pitt is one team the backup goalie is not a consideration
islander1 : 11/23/2014 1:38 am : link
;)
Brock Nelson
KWhite2250 : 11/23/2014 7:50 am : link
Is pretty good. what was it that Greg said about him?
As I have said here on earlier posts
The 12th Man : 11/23/2014 8:09 am : link
When Grabner comes back no way Martin sits. The guy is just the heart and soul of this team. Ran into Ron Greschner in AC and he told me best move Isles made was getting Boychuk. I agree! Have to give Snow credit for what he did. Grabowski and Kulemin have been great moves. This is going to be a great season. Plus the barn was wild last night.

Also getting Leddy for Pokka was a shrewd move as Pokka was at best our third best D prospect (behind Reinhart and Pulock) without many openings in the near future plus the Islanders have taken a number of Defensemen in recent drafts or signed as UDFA. Of our forwards Casey Cizikas is probably playing the worst (which says a lot for our forward play) but the only way you can really take him out is making Bailey our 4th line C but Bailey has been playing well in a shutdown role with Nielsen and Grabovski and looks better at W than he did as a C
Just watched the 3rd period again
pganut : 11/23/2014 9:39 am : link
That was the definition of a complete period. Early goal, kept the pressure on, huge PK, converted our own PP shortly after and then kept pressing leading to the JT goal. That was a textbook period that was executed perfectly. I realize that we will lose some games and will have some clunkers, but this start should pay dividends in their mental approach going forward.
Really psyched for the next 5 months...
timintey : 11/23/2014 10:12 am : link
Such a great feeling - considering in the past I'd be counting down to pitchers and catchers around this time...
It's been a long time since the Islanders
marbles : 11/23/2014 10:27 am : link
are the team that is going to get us through the winter sports season.

Looking forward to watching this team continue to jell. They are getting more attention by the national hockey media.

Heck, even Rick DiPietro is riding the Isles coattails. He was a guest analyst on Hockey Night Live on MSG network.
Best 60 minutes
Fish : 11/23/2014 10:47 am : link
of hockey this team has played in a long time.

Bailey still has room to improve or perhaps this is his ceiling. He has lapses here and there.
In his last 6 games
pganut : 11/23/2014 4:41 pm : link
All wins, Jaro Halak has a .952 save percentage. That'll win you some games fo sho.
and...
feelflows : 11/23/2014 6:03 pm : link
they are winning games Ocho is in net for.. which is big.
