NFT: Islanders - Penguins 7pm Game Thread

pganut : 11/22/2014 3:30 pm
Well, last night was fun, then tense, then fun again after the skills competition. I'm gonna suggest we just put a bullet in 'em early to keep the drama level low.

Same lineup for the Islanders with Halak in net. Pens looking to be doing the same, with Greiss in net instead of the wilted flower.

Tonight is Billy Smith mini-locker night, and old 31 will be on hand. Cappy had Battlin' Billy address the team at the morning skate and showed the team a highlight video so they could appreciate Smith’s play. Capuano said Smith’s address to his players really “enlightened” the team. Let's see if it has any effect.

A couple of Staple tweets relating to Grabner:
Quote:
Grabner did not skate today. Capuano says they'll know more on Monday. Not looking like he'll be ready before Thanksgiving.

Don't believe Grabner not skating today meant a setback. Just a guy who missed all of training camp. No need to rush him back.

Some stats to tide you over:
- Ryan Strome is 1st in NHL in points-per-60 at 5v5 (minimum 100 minutes) after his 3-pt night vs. PIT. Next closest is Voracek at 3.78. Noteworthy on the D, Nick Leddy at 1.97 is second in the NHL for d-men.
- Leddy scored his 5th goal, just two shy of his career high. The Isles’ defense already has 11 goals this season after tallying only 23 last season.
- Big change from last season: Isles are 7-0-0 when leading after 2 periods.
- The Isles have now outscored the opposition 8-2 in second periods over the last five games. The Isles have allowed only 2 second period goals in the last seven games.
- The Isles are 7-5-0 when they score first and are 6-1-0 when they allow the opening goal.
- Last night's win was the fourth of 11 consecutive games against the Eastern Conference. The Isles are 3-1-0 in this stretch, which includes upcoming home/home series with Washington and Ottawa.
- Other than the St. Louis Blues, the Islanders are the only NHL team with two goalies possessing 5 or more wins.
- Last night was the first time since the playoff-clinching win on April 23, 2013 (at Carolina) that the Isles did not allow an opposition power play. It’s the first time in at least 25 years that Pittsburgh has not had a power play vs. the Isles.
- The Isles have killed 22 of 24 penalties over the last seven games after they allowed 6 power play goals in 14 times short over the previous five games.
- Phil Bourque on Penguins radio, describing the Kulemin goal: “Holy, Moly. Those were two good defensemen that (Kulemin) just abused.”

It's the power and the glory
It's a war in paradise
It's a cinderella story
On a tumble of the dice
I'm always tempted to start the game thread

And I never do because you are way better at it. Some great stuff here, particularly that number on Strome. Thank you.
good job pg

Is it just me or are they having a lot more home and home series this year?

Never a big fan of Big Money. Don't dislike it.

I notice that. More to come, too.
Aw, shucks...thanks, Mike.

But I don't have a monopoly on these threads. I do it because it helps me actually de-stress and not think about work-related stuff. I like getting immersed in the team (and not in a geigh Brett way;-)), especially living in the DC area. I get to stay connected this way.

That said, I realize I never gave the Strome P/60 5-on-5 number as comparison: 4.33. No other NHLer is closer than Voracek's 3.78.

feel..not a big fan of the song? One of my sons is taking up the drums this year..I've had him listen to that extensively to hear what fills and trills are supposed to sound like with Neil going off after Alex's lone guitar after the break.

Jay, thanks; I also agree it seems like way more h-and-h's this year.
great info and time spent to get us underway

Other than Brett being a bit off mentally with his love of the Rangers, at least he knows hockey. Always glad to have him, arc, Dav or redbeard pop on here. Definitely light years better than he-who-shall-not-be-named (anymore). Done wasting breath and bandwidth on that mutant. Hopefully, you will be given reason to have a lot of celebratory beverages at the bar tonight.

pganut : 11/22/2014 4:46 pm : link
From today's NY Times.

Selected quotes:
Quote:
“I was here from the beginning when we started rebuilding,” said Nielsen, a third-round draft pick in 2002, who made his N.H.L. debut in January 2007. “I had a chance to try free agency one year, but it never crossed my mind because I could always see the talent here. I really wanted to see it through and find out how far we can take this.”

And

“I hate getting scored on, and I never want to be outworked. I want to work the hardest every time out there.”

Love this guy. And hopefully the same rationale that Boychuk and Leddy experience, along with other FAs today and into the future will want to sign here.

KWhite2250 : 11/22/2014 7:48 pm : link
Guy kills us. Halak has to stop that though.

The pens goalie cannot control the puck, gotta get to the rebounds
We definitely had the better of that period
pganut : 11/22/2014 7:48 pm : link
Not that you get points for that. But keep the pressure on and score on the PP after the break. They're a good team and no shame in giving up a goal. I just want to see us test Greiss more. Seemed to be giving up quite a few rebounds late in the period.
Looked very similar
JayBinQueens : 11/22/2014 7:59 pm : link
to the first goal we gave up against Tampa.

Instead of the quick SH goal let's tie it up on the PP

I don't know how I feel about Bailey on L4.
Might be just my observation
pganut : 11/22/2014 8:48 pm : link
But that Martin goal came off the first real chance from in front, other than longer-range shots. Seems like Greiss easily fended off shots from the side. Perhaps the lesson here is to work the puck inside, or create traffic in front to get shots from the slot. Pens D seems to suffer from the same affliction that's plagued us in the past...good sticks, but less active on taking the body.

Don't get me wrong he has proven to be worth more, but I am also trying to get the 12 best forwards on the ice and Lee is doing more than Cizikas especially since he has improved defensively

This is possibly my favorite game of the year thus far. I LOVE JOHNNY BOYCHUCK!!! Talk about stepping it up. This guy showed another level in terms of stepping up effort wise in a big game. He showed something we haven't seen on this team in the past. A level beyond your regular game. He is a guy who's won a stanley cup, who's seen it, been there. He wanted this game so bad tonight. That's what I saw and that is huge for this team. I'm not selling anyone else short because that was an awesome team game bUT I officially love Boychuk.

from a pure hockey standpoint, the shit Malkin does is really unbelievable. If yo gave me the choice of Crosby or Malkin to start a team, I'd take Malkin.

Of course, I'd take Tavares over both, but just saying...

What else can be said about the game that has not been said already. They put the wood to the Penguins. The fourth line comes through again. At this rate, Grabner will get a lot more rest before he comes back.

They were physical and forechecked the living crappie out of Pittsburgh. A big f*ck you to November slumps. This team is pretty good.

Now I understand this win comes with an asterisk since they beat a back up goalie because no way would the Isles score four again Fleury. Oh wait.
Pitt is one team the backup goalie is not a consideration

When Grabner comes back no way Martin sits. The guy is just the heart and soul of this team. Ran into Ron Greschner in AC and he told me best move Isles made was getting Boychuk. I agree! Have to give Snow credit for what he did. Grabowski and Kulemin have been great moves. This is going to be a great season. Plus the barn was wild last night.

Also getting Leddy for Pokka was a shrewd move as Pokka was at best our third best D prospect (behind Reinhart and Pulock) without many openings in the near future plus the Islanders have taken a number of Defensemen in recent drafts or signed as UDFA. Of our forwards Casey Cizikas is probably playing the worst (which says a lot for our forward play) but the only way you can really take him out is making Bailey our 4th line C but Bailey has been playing well in a shutdown role with Nielsen and Grabovski and looks better at W than he did as a C
Just watched the 3rd period again
pganut : 11/23/2014 9:39 am : link
That was the definition of a complete period. Early goal, kept the pressure on, huge PK, converted our own PP shortly after and then kept pressing leading to the JT goal. That was a textbook period that was executed perfectly. I realize that we will lose some games and will have some clunkers, but this start should pay dividends in their mental approach going forward.
Really psyched for the next 5 months...
