NFT: Islanders - Penguins 7pm Game Thread

pganut : 11/22/2014 3:30 pm
Well, last night was fun, then tense, then fun again after the skills competition. I'm gonna suggest we just put a bullet in 'em early to keep the drama level low.

Same lineup for the Islanders with Halak in net. Pens looking to be doing the same, with Greiss in net instead of the wilted flower.

Tonight is Billy Smith mini-locker night, and old 31 will be on hand. Cappy had Battlin' Billy address the team at the morning skate and showed the team a highlight video so they could appreciate Smith’s play. Capuano said Smith’s address to his players really “enlightened” the team. Let's see if it has any effect.

A couple of Staple tweets relating to Grabner:
Quote:
Grabner did not skate today. Capuano says they'll know more on Monday. Not looking like he'll be ready before Thanksgiving.

Don't believe Grabner not skating today meant a setback. Just a guy who missed all of training camp. No need to rush him back.

Some stats to tide you over:
- Ryan Strome is 1st in NHL in points-per-60 at 5v5 (minimum 100 minutes) after his 3-pt night vs. PIT. Next closest is Voracek at 3.78. Noteworthy on the D, Nick Leddy at 1.97 is second in the NHL for d-men.
- Leddy scored his 5th goal, just two shy of his career high. The Isles’ defense already has 11 goals this season after tallying only 23 last season.
- Big change from last season: Isles are 7-0-0 when leading after 2 periods.
- The Isles have now outscored the opposition 8-2 in second periods over the last five games. The Isles have allowed only 2 second period goals in the last seven games.
- The Isles are 7-5-0 when they score first and are 6-1-0 when they allow the opening goal.
- Last night's win was the fourth of 11 consecutive games against the Eastern Conference. The Isles are 3-1-0 in this stretch, which includes upcoming home/home series with Washington and Ottawa.
- Other than the St. Louis Blues, the Islanders are the only NHL team with two goalies possessing 5 or more wins.
- Last night was the first time since the playoff-clinching win on April 23, 2013 (at Carolina) that the Isles did not allow an opposition power play. It’s the first time in at least 25 years that Pittsburgh has not had a power play vs. the Isles.
- The Isles have killed 22 of 24 penalties over the last seven games after they allowed 6 power play goals in 14 times short over the previous five games.
- Phil Bourque on Penguins radio, describing the Kulemin goal: “Holy, Moly. Those were two good defensemen that (Kulemin) just abused.”

It's the power and the glory
It's a war in paradise
It's a cinderella story
On a tumble of the dice

What about Bailey centering rather than Cizikas and Grabner playing alongside Grabovski and Nielsen?

I don't know how I feel about Bailey on L4.
Might be just my observation
pganut : 11/22/2014 8:48 pm : link
But that Martin goal came off the first real chance from in front, other than longer-range shots. Seems like Greiss easily fended off shots from the side. Perhaps the lesson here is to work the puck inside, or create traffic in front to get shots from the slot. Pens D seems to suffer from the same affliction that's plagued us in the past...good sticks, but less active on taking the body.
need more bodies

Don't get me wrong he has proven to be worth more, but I am also trying to get the 12 best forwards on the ice and Lee is doing more than Cizikas especially since he has improved defensively

KWhite2250 : 11/22/2014 9:38 pm : link
Thanks to the garth for getting us B level players like Leddy and Boychuk!!

Im positive we wont get a driveby tonight but what can you expect of a pens/rags fan?
Boys, that was an ass-whipping.
pganut : 11/22/2014 9:38 pm : link
Looking at the last 48 hours (and the way the year has started leading into this), I think that we can agree that there has been a message sent. This is a different team.

Ders, star #3; JT, star #2; Matty Marts #1 star.

What a great weekend for us. Very proud of this team.
Fucking awesome!
NYMase : 11/22/2014 9:41 pm : link
Great win and sweep of the home and home...Nice to see JT back

Also nice to see the composure of this hockey team. This has been such a fun season so far
Although he didn't get a star
Mike in NY : 11/22/2014 9:47 pm : link
Visnovsky had a heck of a game
Tell you what
pganut : 11/22/2014 9:49 pm : link
Since his rib injury earlier on, Hammer has been very quiet. Not tonight. Especially at the end, banging and thumping with passion. If we see the return of the #3 we know, it makes things even better.

Danny Kanell : 11/22/2014 10:03 pm : link
This team is fucking awesome right now. First place. LGI!
Was at the game tonight
Metnut : 11/22/2014 10:21 pm : link
love this a team so much. Was drinkng at champions since 4 and the atmosphere was electric. This year is a long time coming!

Im going again on Wednesday too and I hope we keep things rolling.
This has been a real solid start to the season
The 12th Man : 11/22/2014 10:22 pm : link
They played great tonight. JT played awesome tonight. Strome has really impressed me the past few weeks. Last year we all said needed a goalie another Guy on D and A forward and we would be a playoff team. Well we got 2 DMen and 2 real good Forwards. Look at us now you Ranger bitches!
eh...sounds like it was a boring game
feelflows : 11/22/2014 10:43 pm : link
On an exciting note, I saw Brendan Kichton score a PP goal tonight!!
I believe they officially put an end
5J : 11/22/2014 11:35 pm : link
