NFT: Marion Barry dead

Jints in Carolina : 11/23/2014 2:53 am
Marion S. Barry Jr., a sharecropper’s son and civil rights pioneer who became a flamboyant and polarizing mayor of Washington, went to prison on cocaine charges, then recaptured City Hall in one of the most improbable comebacks in the history of American urban politics, died shortly after midnight on Sunday. He was 78.

no?

Don't really know much about Barry but his successor the second time was Anthony Williams. Anthony was DC mayor at time of sniper attacks. Anthony's sister, Loris, was a 12-year co-worker of mine in Los Angeles.

RIP.

Why is he so revered?

Hit the crack pipe in office, commited tax fraud and nearly bankrupt DC. I don't understand the love for the guy. He wasn't Nelson Mandela.
not necessarily revered

but these people have families was, I guess, my rather obliquely made point..

American politics. Right up there with Boss Tweed, Huey Long and Trent Lott. He talked all about helping "the people" but in the end it was all about himself and lining his own pocket.

Rest in peace? I don't don't give a crap how he rests. Bury him and forget him.
his rotting corpse

will still be elected to the ward 8 position and he might still get votes for mayor in four years.

Well, on the plus side he was an Eagle Scout. That's gotta count for something.

From 87-91 and 2000-2011, I am sad for his family and loved ones, but see this politically as addition by subtraction. Even recently there are so many minor scandals around him: arrests, tax debts, etc. He seems to have earned his civil rights stripes in the 60s, but since the 80s did nothing to reward the incredible (blind) loyalty of DC's poorest minority constituents but deal in the worst kind of cronyism, and racial politics. Sadly they got the representative they deserved by standing by him.

With a real mayor like Anthony Williams, the city did so much better, but it took YEARS to dig out all of his entrenched incompetent, grasping cronies, That legacy is almost but not quite past at a city level. I'm sure his Ward will also take years to recover.

That's kinda funny. Haha!

But no harm. Nice to see someone with something positive to say about the man at his passing.

I'm not one for shaming the recently deceased, but he's the poster child for the willingness of cities to elect the worst of people to the mayoralty and to keep electing them. "Bitch set me up," numerous corruption allegations, actually had his authority over the city stripped by the feds after he bankrupted it, presided over DC taking the title as the murder capitol of the country. He did some very important things in his youth, but his status as a punchline was well-deserved.
How about this gem from the ex- mayor?

No, if Barry said it, Sharpton would not have done anything. If a white politician said it... then you would be correct.

The man did suffer from foot and mouth disease and other vices! He tried to explain away his comment "Dirty Asians" as some sort of cultural difference, talk about using stereotypes, LOL!
