NFT: Best value in smokers?

Dunedin81 : 11/23/2014 2:11 pm
We have a Char-Grill dual grill (half propane, half charcoal/smoker) and it is circling the drain. We want to replace it with a better smoker but price is an object (so the Green Egg is out). We saw a Char-Grill Acorn that was a decent price, does anyone have any insight on that one or can anyone recommend another at a reasonable price?
I bought

A Vision smoker, which is like a large Green Egg for $450 from Sam's 4 months ago. That was a clearance deal, normally on sale $570. I just saw that they've got it for $399 during there BF sale.

I love the damn thing and for that price you can't beat it.

Love my smokey mountain bullet. I use it often here in CT, and it's not difficult regulating the heat during the winter months. I plan on smoking my thanksgiving turkey using it.
Are you looking for a dedicated smoker or a grill that you can also

Seriously, that Weber Smokey Mountain is killer...

Open to either possibility. The Akorn has the potential to do both, the Weber does not, but I've heard good things about the Weber both here and elsewhere. I can get a cheap charcoal grill if I miss that capability.
I'm obviously biased towards the WSM.

I own one (18") that I bought off of craigslist. That being said, I've smoked things using the kettle (22") and even the Jumbo Joe (18").

Do they still make the Akorn?
Peter in Atlanta : 11/23/2014 3:08 pm : link
Not to be Stan but I don't see it on CharGrillers site. I only mention it for potential replacement parts.
I saw it in Lowes today...
Dunedin81 : 11/23/2014 3:12 pm : link
and I see it on Amazon, so I think so.

+1... Works great and it's relatively cheap

and that thing is awesome. No regrets. Will maintain 225 in a snowstorm or a 100 degree day. Buy it once, have it forever.
As for me - I've fallen in love with the Pit Barrel Cooker

- it's fool proof - and you can make competition quality Smoked BBQ with it easily - it cost less than $300 --- there are a whole lot of professionals that it pisses off - I use mine a ton - In fact - I'm doing Thanksgiving with it

That style of cooker is an "ugly drum smoker" (UDS). They're pretty common and work quite well. Never heard that they piss anyone off.

I have a local guy that makes them starting at $250

Like anything else, it's person using the tool. I had some really good Q from a guy using Alton Brown's large clay flower pot with an electric hotplate creating smoke.

and if you want to spend the money and go fully automatic, there are plenty of options available to you to turn it la-zy-Q.

Currently have two birds awaiting spatchcocking for t-day smoking.
I feel kinda embarrassed to say I use a Bradley

But I don't have to be smart and it does a fine job for me. Just finished a few minutes ago using it as a cold smoker for gravlax

Why is that embarrassing? Doesn't matter if you're smoking meat in a garbage can, if you can keep the temps stable and know what you're doing, the end result will still be praiseworthy.

I run an IQ 120 with mine. I've also used it with my other grills for smoking and it works well.
I use a BBQ Guru I got second hand off eBay

Really thought it was a waste of money at the time, but it's pretty damn good. The WSM is almost self-regulating, but these things take it to 'set it and forget it' territory.

What I don't have yet (been working on building one) is a wifi thermometer that can post meat and smoker temps via web page so that I can leave the house for short periods of time and still keep an eye on progress.

Pisses off - because it makes great competition quality stuff very easily - no secrets required - there are a couple of u-tube reviews by big time competition Q'ers grudgingly admitting how good it is
I second

The Pit Barrel Cooker. Bought it about 6 months ago and man was that a good buy. I got it for under $300 with free shipping off their website
