Collingsworth comment on Coughlin

NewBlue : 11/24/2014 6:54 am
"Well who are you gonna get who is as good as TC?"
Yeah let's reward him with a new 5-year contract, in fact let's make him coach for life OK.

There are so many aspects that are wrong with these guys:

Talent level
Injuries
Scheme
Great practices that rarely transfer to the game.

But 5 years out of 6 no play-offs, that is an indictment that something is amiss with the coaching staff. These players do not respond to the whip that TC has been applying.

that 5 of the last 6 years more than 50% of our draft picks are not on the team... the others are roster fillers who prob wouldnt make other teams....

Just look at our LBers....... nuff said

I won't criticize Manning because he is a sacred cow here, but is there a reason that when defenses should be giving us little cushions at the end of the half and the end of the 4th Q,in return for eating up clock, we can't muster one 1st down lately?
Right Kevin
NewBlue : 11/24/2014 7:08 am : link
So you are indicating the we should look at the front office (Reese & company) for change.....well that ain't happening.
And BTW....I don't seem to recall that when we have drafted in the last few years that the experts, or BBI, has accused Reese of reaching on virtually every pick.....is there a time when coaching must develop what has been brought in?
In all honesty

Tom is not the problem. Players make plays and his quarterback last night made two huge boners. Over throwing Preston Parker for a walk in touchdown and then looking right at Beckham streaking down the middle of the field with the defender at least five to ten yards behind him and that was almost right off the snap of the ball and he didn't pull the trigger. It would have been an eighty yard TD strike.

I don't know about anyone else but it has gotten to the point the past couple of years you almost hold your breath whenever Eli drops back to pass because you know something bad is going to eventually happen. I agree when people say Eli is not the problem but he can't keep making those types of mistakes and expect to win games. He's made some of the most memorable throws in NFL history but he has done a 180 in that you almost expect him to that rather then engineer the game winning drive.

As for the defensive line. That was as disappointing an effort from a pressure standpoint then I can remember from a Giant defense. And for Fewell to stay with a four man rush and not try to something anything made no sense. They couldn't get past the line of scrimmage on the pass rush. I can't imagine what Perry was thinking at that point. He needed to try something and he did nothing. Just keep rushing four. Maybe something will happen. We need a new DC.
The HC is supposed to make everyone accountable

Right down to your franchise QB.

What I don't get is that it seems that they don't seem to be proficient in any one thing. They run screens in practice?
What's the definition of insanity again..?..

...How many "doing the same things over and over expecting the same results" years does this man get? If the answer is as long as he wants, then the owners have indeed crossed over the line, and will be essentially stealing money from the fans until they cross back and look to the future.

They simply have to look long term. They've run out of band-aids.

I agree. If you credit the head coach for the wins shouldn't he also be responsible for the losses?

Complete games
Rjanyg : 11/24/2014 7:41 am : link
Between last week and last night, 2 games were lost, one by the offense ( SF ) and one by the defense. Sometimes winning comes down to making plays, kinda like OBJ made last night....he is a difference maker. Our defense needs somebody, anybody to make plays. A linebacker, a safety, a DE, anyone!!!! They are so worried about assignment they never seem to force a turnover or a bad pass in critical times. On defense that starts up front. JPP played well and at times disappeared. Smith is probably the best LT in the game. Somebody else needs to make a play up front. Why Moore wasn't on the field on that last drive is obsured. Maybe we miss Jenkins inside? Other pieces are missing, like Prince, Beason but would they have made a difference?

We as Giant fans have seen dominant defenses, especially the front 7 so this hurts to see Romo have 8 and 9 seconds to pick our secondary apart. It is sad and is the part or our team that needs the next over haul. Our offense actually played extremely well last night. Our defense needs to make one play when it mattered.
I agree for most part
old man : 11/24/2014 7:55 am : link
with the Eli boners comment, but look at the aftermath of the pick: where was the D for the 60 yds AFTER the pick?
Where was the D line on the last Cowboys drive when Romo had the ball 6&1/2 and 7&1/2 seconds on 2 of his last 3 passes?
Gasping for air because they were gassed.
I'm not even really picking on the D; teams generally succeed or fail as a team.
My indictment is on the groceries JR has bought for TC to make a gourmet meal with: 5/7ths are from the discontinued or near expiration date aisle.
Agree.......

You mean like Herz getting stiff armed by Murray, or Rolle not making the int, or JPP in the last drive?

Reese overpaid a corner who can't stay on the field...he paid big bucks for a MLB that no one was bidding for......he signed one of the slowest free agent linebackers I have ever seen.....Ayers for all his stats, he is a situational rusher, at best....the fact this team has Herz, Paysinger, and Hosley on this team is a complete joke...

And yet there are posters out there saying we can run the table or we are just a few players away.....

We score on our first 3 drives, aided by a non fumble call....yet, while you felt good about this game, you knew two things were going to happen, because these are the New York Football Giants....

This offense would go conservative after 3 straight scores, and that this defense would fall apart in the second half.....the offense lost it's momentum, and when it looked like it might get it back, Eli created a 14 point swing.....this defense hasn't been able to hold a fourth quarter lead against a good team in a long, long, time...
Who you gonna get as good as Tom Landry?

It's not an unfair question.
but when you are as fundamentally bad as we are from top to bottom and make the same mistakes week in and week out... and have done so for 2+ years, I start to wonder if the answer even matters.

Can it really get worse than it currently is (and has been for 2+ years)?

The more important question is: Is TC the guy to help dig us out of this hole, or is a new voice required?

I lean towards "new voice" but admit it is far from a slam dunk.

Offer him the HC job and ask if he'd be willing to keep Macadoo.
It's not the coaching as many want to put it on
micky : 11/24/2014 10:30 am : link
sure they make mistakes time-to-time..everyone does. However, this is a player issue here. It's on them. Roster needs a major over haul. There's a few base pieces to work off of, but, this will take a few off seasons to get the right personnel in place. It's gonna take a lot of experiment with getting and fitting the players to positions of need. And hopefully more durable players too Basically a rebuild process.
i hate that logic

i personally want coughlin to stay, but there are plenty of people available and its on the giants front office to know who to replace him with. not fans who are sick of bad product
here's what you have to ask yourself
djm : 11/24/2014 11:16 am : link
and to me it's one of the toughest questions I have always had about football. The chicken or the egg theory...how much input does a typical coach, say Coughlin have with personnel and regardless, how much impact does a coach have at developing talent?

Basically, I always gave Coughlin a shit load of credit when it came to building a team, identifying and nurturing talent...just the overall team architect--Coughlin, in my eyes was always a big plus in these areas and one of the reasons why I felt Accorsi and even Reese were getting accolades in the mid to late 2000s. So if I am going to subscribe to that line of thinking, that Coughlin was adept at building the team, then I have to believe he deserves some of the blame now. I think that's fair. If you're gonna praise Coughlin for 2004-2011...then he should get blame for now. Did Reese forget how to scout and draft and identify talent or did Coughlin's plan here finally start to show cracks? Little of both? I don't know...

IT's a tough think to really figure out. But I think the head coach is going to fall because in the end it's HIS team. This is Coughlin's baby. That includes the defense.

I can see why some would defend Coughlin. I still want to at times but I don't think it's fair to put all the blame on the GM for the lack of talent. We all praised Coughlin for demanding the OL be a focal point in 2004...well....what the fuck happened? Did Coughlin stop making those demands or what? What about the LBs? The RBs that haven't made a big play in 2.5 years now? Why isn't Moore playing in a big spot? On and on...

and of course
djm : 11/24/2014 11:17 am : link
it's sad but injuries haven't helped things at all the last 2 years. Injuries will get you fired and they just might with Coughlin.

Good post, djm.

It is hard to know just how much influence TC has had in personnel decisions, but at the end of the day, it's Reese's signatures on the dotted lines.

My take is that TC probably got too much credit for the increased talent levels in the late 2000's, and probably a little too much blame now.

I think the uptick in talent coincided with Reese running the drafts.

Landry did not have Aikman, Irvin, and Smith. Those teams also won a SB with Barry Switzer.

could be, that's a fair take...

I am scared that the GM and owner all but neutered Coughlin the last year or two and heaped this new offense on him. Ironically enough, I don't think Mcadoo has done a bad job at all, but it's gonna be a weird off season. How do you fire the hot shot GM you just moved heaven and earth to get one year earlier but on the same token, how do you keep the guy if you fire the head coach? Even more so, how do you promote this OC to head coach after just one season?

I have a gut feeling they keep Coughlin and the OC and demand a change at DC...but that's not necessarily got me feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Then again nothing does.
Here is what I truly do not understand...
EricJ (formerly Tyleraimee) : 11/24/2014 4:46 pm : link
1. We have a QB who really needs time to throw. More than MOST other QBs, Eli seems to get bothered a bit more than others by the pressure. You can see a change in him once he has been pressured/hit. He also is not the most mobile with no ability to escape and create outside of the pocket.
2. Our coach really wants to run the ball to setup the pass. He wants balance. If he had his choice, he would run the ball at 5 yards per carry all day and just push the ball into the end zone that way.

So, why would Reese play games with our O-line? Why would he try to fix it with duct tape year after year? It really makes no sense.
