Chances Eli takes a team friendly contract?

Sean : 11/24/2014 8:35 am
I'd love for Eli to be the QB here for the next 4-5 years, but I really hope he is willing to sign a team friendly contract to help build the pieces around him. The NFL isn't that hard to figure out, you need good line play and be able to move the ball down the field. It isn't like other sports where it takes a 2-3 year rebuilding period. Look at Dallas, when you have protection it makes all the difference in the world.

I hope Eli realizes the value for putting up another 3-4 very solid years for his career and have a chance to win. Eli can play with the best of them, but unlike Rodgers, Brady, Peyton, and Luck, he needs the pieces around him.

Eli has had a solid year for the most part and actually think the McAdoo offense can be successful, we just need more pieces.

Cobb/Nelson
D. Thomas/E. Sanders/J. Thomas

yep...imagine if they had weapons
Give him a good OL and he will make average WRs look good.

A bad OL just wastes your skill position players

will probably give him more than Palmer just got
Tom Condon

have never left a single penny at the negotiating table
If I had an agent and he left money on the table,

I'd have a new agent.

Eli's worth will only be found once he retires, or leaves.
Imagine BBI's wrath if, for just $2 million more a year than the Giants offer he signed with Houston or the Rams.

Be real,
GiantFilthy : 11/24/2014 9:01 am : link
he won't get it because the team has a little bit of leverage this time around, but Eli and his agent will try to once again make him the highest paid player in history. Like most players I'd imagine Eli gives no fucks about team friendly.
what Ben said

With Condon as his agent, it's very unlikely.

It would appear the strategy for NYG is to work towards a shorter extension, something like three years, which brings us up to Eli's 37th b-day.

Keep working towards a better OL, get him another weapon at WR, and things will be looking up.
He has to have a team friendly contract

He is not a 20M per yer QB. I hope he retires a Giants many years from now but crippling the cap for a guy who has a propensity for bad interceptions and is not a perrenial playoff QB is not a good idea.
Condon

should rightly get his client all he can.
HOWEVER, that said:
1. Isn't Condon the agent that is most cooperative with the Giants in negotiating, and even if he is not,
2. Eli wants to win, which in part goes with his history of picks because he puts Ws and Ls on himself, and I believe he will leave money on the table AND work a contract, so the Giants can do their best offseason shopping. He also knows getting an Iupati and other OL help will save his life, as well as his career.
I THINK the Giants will probably have 25M to work with, and only a couple of guys worth re-signing, plus a likely cap increase, so they can go all out in FA with some give-back, if I am correct.
OPTIMUS where are you?
I'd trade Eli for bag of donuts
sackpack : 11/24/2014 10:53 am : link
before I'd pay him 20M a year.
Make it stop.

I've seen every Giant QB since YA

not only is Eli the only one to win two championships, he's the best one and he's a champion off the field too. But if there is going to be a complete coaching staff change I would trade him if there was an RG3 deal to made and start over completely. Highly doubtful the Giants would ever consider it though.
Part of me wishes he'd take a vet min deal just so people could
Riggies : 11/24/2014 11:03 am : link
eventually get it shoved in their faces how ridiculous pointing the blame for this team's failures at his contract is.

Reese and Ross, the coaching staff, are not suddenly going to become good at their jobs, because there's a few million more for them to play with.

The hole the Giants are in, they're going to be in for awhile regardless of what Manning is making or, more accurately, counting for against the cap.
I would ask Eli
SJGiant : 11/24/2014 11:09 am : link
to take the same team friendly contract that Tom Brady got. He understands that he needs help on his team. Will Eli understand that?

Overthecap Tom Brady Contract - ( New Window )
If you surround Eli with NFL quality
Scuzzlebutt : 11/24/2014 11:20 am : link
players he is one of the top QBs in the league. This has been proven. He is also a model citizen off the field and a quiet leader on the team. We need to stop complaining that we need to pay our franchise QB like a franchise QB.
Brady didn't take a discount...
Chicken Teriyaki Boy : 11/24/2014 12:03 pm : link
He got more guaranteed money, sooner.

Essentially his deal is $60 million guaranteed for 3 years.
With the cap hit spread over 5 years.

If he plays into the last two years, he'll get another extension and more money.

Actually, Tom Brady Is Getting A Raise - ( New Window )

Yes. Thanks for the link to the article. While I see that the article emphasizes future cap hits, if I look at this contact only, it still looks favorable thru 2017. I understand that Brady and the Pats may have an agreement to renegotiate that contract in a year or so. But if they don't, then the contract is very reasonable by today's standards. Either you have to pay Eli for about 4 or 5 years, or you have to say next year is Eli's last year.

This offseason is the time to negotiate with Eli
Jacobs27 : 11/24/2014 1:37 pm : link
I'd offer him 4-5 years with a max average value of $15 million. If he signs it we get lots of salary cap relief next year. If he refuses to then trade him to the highest bidder and let them pay him $20 million a year.

I'd be willing to be Eli was telling the truth when he said he had a strong desire to finish his career here. Let's put him to the test and see if he'll take $15 million a year so we can rebuild the team. I bet he would.

His endorsement value in NY must be far higher than any other market as well. That Dunkin Donuts deal alone must be worth $3-4 milllion a year.
