NFL

Bowen B/R: Tale of the Tape for NFL Week 12
Code:

"Tony Romo Finds Dez Bryant in the End Zone to Beat the Giants
With an opportunity to put the ball in the end zone on Sunday night to beat the New York Giants, Romo had the luxury to move in the pocket behind his offensive line, while Bryant worked the back of the end zone to get open on a classic “scramble drill.”

Here’s a look at how the play unfolded with the Dallas Cowboys using five-man protection to shut down the Giants' front-four rush in a crucial game situation.

Personnel: Posse/11 (3WR-1TE-1RB)

Formation: Empty

Offensive Concept: Smash-7

Defensive Scheme: Cover 1

The Giants initially take away the deep 7- (corner) route to Bryant with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie maintaining his outside-leverage position versus the release and stem of the Cowboys wide receiver. That’s the exact technique you want to see as the cornerback rolls through the break with help in the middle of the field (single-high safety).

However, when this play “breaks down,” defensive backs have to “plaster” to their coverage while using the end line as their help. That’s a tough spot for any defensive back when the quarterback can buy time or stand in the pocket because of the protection up front.

Look at the blocking from the Cowboys' offensive line as Romo can step up, slide, pump, etc. while his receivers work away from leverage and find room to separate in the secondary.

The Cowboys win their one-on-one matchups (with a double on the nose) and give Romo an enormous amount of time (almost seven seconds) to scan the field as Bryant starts to work the end line.

This turns into a playground route. Get open. That’s it.

Even if the defensive backs “plaster” to their coverage and use a “basketball technique” on the end line (face up the receiver), that’s a long time to chase after a wideout.

Bryant works the end line here and eventually separates from Rodgers-Cromartie as Romo finds the receiver for the game-winning score. But it started up front for the Cowboys. And that’s been the story all season in Dallas on the offensive side of the ball."

Stockwell PFF: ReFo: Cowboys @ Giants, Week 12

Code:

New York Giants – Performances of Note

Odell Beckham Jr., WR: +3.7

Breakdown: Giants fans had to wait for his debut but Beckham has been worth the wait in the last month, both in terms of his pre-game warm up and his performances and production on the field. Taking his season total to four touchdowns against the Cowboys Beckham picked up 90 yards on four catches against Brandon Carr but the Giants struggled to get him involved in the second half.

Signature Play: Wow! Words cannot do his touchdown catch to open the second quarter justice; you could watch that catch on repeat for hours and never tire of it.

Johnathan Hankins, DT: +1.1

Breakdown: One of the Giants’ sparks this season left the game briefly due to injury last night but put in another solid display earning his eighth grade of +1.0 or above in 11 starts. A pair of pressures (1 Ht, 1 Hu) and a pair of stops were paired with solid work at the point of attack aiding others with a measure of control against the Cowboys’ interior offensive line.

Signature Stat: After a dozen weeks sits just outside our five top-graded defensive tackles with a +19.8 overall grade on 471 snaps.

Geoff Schwartz, RT: +2.3

Breakdown: A debut at last for the Giants’ key signing on the offensive line from April. Filling in at right tackle for Justin Pugh, Schwartz quickly found his best form as a run blocker providing a push and a level of control that was lacking to the left side of the line. A couple of bullrush pressures on the Giants’ final drive took a little gloss off of his display in pass protection but this was a fine debut for a player the Giants had hoped would have 10 starts under his belt at guard by now.

Signature Play: Setup the Giants’ longest run of the day at 4:55 in the second to seal Anthony Spencer, spurning the double team help of Daniel Fells, to spring Andre Williams for an 18-yard gain.

PFF Game Ball

Two wide receivers stood out and while Dez Bryant walks away with the victory, Odell Beckham walks away with the PFF game ball for one of the great catches in NFL history."

Barnwell Grantland: Week 12 Wrap-up: Together, We Appreciate Football
Code:

"This should have ended the game And1 mixtape–style. The 20,000 Giants fans in attendance who didn’t sell their tickets to Cowboys fans1 should have stormed the field waving towels. The Giants should have walked off and signed autographs and drank energy drinks. I am sure the Cowboys would have understood. You’ve seen the myriad clips of Beckham making ridiculous catches in practice, and while that’s incredible enough, it’s another thing to do it in real time against an active defense in a game.
It’s about as difficult of a catch as you can make, and that isn’t entirely an Eli Manning joke. Beckham is being interfered with as he runs downfield. He has to avoid stepping out of bounds. Brandon Carr drags Beckham’s body away from the football right before he jumps. He has only one arm to work with. The force of the throw causes his arm to bend backward; it’s a wonder that he didn’t hurt his shoulder. And then that catch, somehow, with three fingers, on a 45-degree rainy night in northern Jersey. Odell Beckham caught it like he was supposed to catch it all along and we never should have suspected otherwise. It was such an incredible catch that, outside of a more important context, it’s hard to imagine anybody making a better one. It was so good that there wasn’t an immediate Twitter backlash to the idea that it was amazing. That’s the highest praise anything can get in 2014.

It’s fair to say that Beckham has exceeded expectations, even given that he missed the first four weeks of the season with a hamstring injury and has been a terrifying weapon really only during the five-game stretch since Victor Cruz’s departure via injury. Over the last five games, Beckham’s posted a 35-537-4 line; that prorates over an entire season to 112 catches, 1,718 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns. Scouting reports said Beckham could be outmuscled in a crowd and wasn’t a red zone threat, but he has been a complete receiver this season, capable of both beating guys with raw speed and physically outpointing them with his leaping ability..."

"OK, maybe it was only seven seconds. It felt longer. That’s an unheard-of amount of time for an NFL quarterback, but it was the second time on this drive that Romo was able to spend seven seconds in the pocket. Poor Jason Pierre-Paul is supposed to go out and get a deal in the free-agent market with that on film? Tyron Smith knocked him down twice and could have pancaked him if he weren’t more interested in knocking him down again. And this is in pass protection, mind you; while it wasn’t Dallas’s most impressive game of the year on the ground, DeMarco Murray still carried the ball 24 times for 121 yards, just over an even five yards per carry."
