Offseason moves: getting physical with Suh and Iupati

chris r : 11/24/2014 12:21 pm
The Giants have been beaten up at the line of scrimmage for much of this year and last and IMO that is the biggest thing that needs to change for the team to contend.

According to overthecap.com, the Giants are projected to be about 20 million under the cap next year. Cutting Kiwi, Beason and Walton frees up another 11 million.

I'd go hard after Suh and Iupati, two of the more physical players in the game. They'd go a long way in helping to reestablish control of the LOS.

Would love these moves.

I agree about being soft.

I would go after SUH and let JPP go if he wants a big deal. We need to draft some nasty players. I am tired of watching our line get punched around every game. We have no swgger.
Not sure we could afford Suh, unless
section125 : 11/24/2014 12:29 pm : link
JPP was let go.
I would love Iupati. He and Schwartz make a nice set of road grader guards.

Thought Schwartz did ok at RT last night after only a week of practice.
I'd rate the possibility
JonC : 11/24/2014 12:30 pm : link
as virtually zero.

You're welcome.
I hope our free agent strategy
bceagle05 : 11/24/2014 12:30 pm : link
is quality over quantity this offseason. Rather than signing a bunch of decent guys in the Jennings and Schwartz mold, let's go for one or two big-ticket guys. I can't realistically say we'd get both, as many teams with money to spend will target these two in particular, but we need some impact players that make those around them better. Look at what Beckham is doing for the offense. Suh and Hankins in the middle might would at least be a fair fight against the Cowboys monster interior OL, and would help our DEs and LBs.
Suh
brich30 : 11/24/2014 12:30 pm : link
Cant get suh without cutting JPP or Rolle. Hes gonna get 12-14 mil a year.

Iupati is a bad signing. Gonna get 5-6 a year. We already have 5 a year tied up at G with Schwartz.

I like suh but think our team is more desperate for DE then DT with hankins and bromley as the future.

We need a Stud LT.

Boley, Canty, and Bernard in one offseason. Then Rolle the next year.

Probably a long shot but it sure would be nice.

Possibly both.
These two

I would go after Suh

but I would stay away from Iupati. I'd rather go through the draft for the OL. I'd like to try and get a group of players early on for cosistency over time.

I would also make a play for Randall Cobb
This team just desperately

It's a finite cap league, and our management tends to be bargain hunters, even with regards to their bigger UFA additions.

Yeah we went from sitting pretty at safety with Rolle coming off a great year, Hill looking promising and Brown returning after a big INT season to having nobody there going forward.

I do have some hope for Cooper Taylor though.
Suh isn't a smart move
BillT : 11/24/2014 12:38 pm : link
With Hankins here and Bromley in the wings. DE is the issue though there may not be a FA solution. Also, OL needs a FA solution at least for a G to complete the line. A FA safety or resigning Rolle is a need as well. The Cruz injury is a problem and a solid #2/3 type WR would be good as a hedge in case Cruz doesn't make it.
Perhaps they could sign Iupati
JonC : 11/24/2014 12:39 pm : link
in a coup similar to how they signed Kareem, but Suh figures to look for a full market contract.

Can I team with this many holes afford to allocate a $15M cap hit to a DT? I'm not a capologist, but some quick arithmetic says no.
JonC
bradshaw44 : 11/24/2014 12:40 pm : link
Usually I would agree, but they did supposedly throw a pretty big number at Haynesworth. So I think they make exceptions at times.

I'm a huge fan of Randall Cobb, but I doubt that we would be able to afford him if we want to improve our other areas of need. He's put up great numbers in his contract year, and I'm sure he'll get a hefty premium.
Iupati has slipped

That's the point. Bromley waits in the wings with a horrible defense and Markus Freakin Kuhn getting PT.
re: Haynesworth
JonC : 11/24/2014 12:43 pm : link
I heard the number was closer to $40M in total, not the $80M that made the rounds. I suspect the writers that floated $80M were literally just trying to generate web hits from fired up NYG fans.
We're never gonna fill all the holes on the roster.
bceagle05 : 11/24/2014 12:44 pm : link
No team does. We might as well build some areas of strength that we could hang our hats on.
Also, signing AH would have been adding to a more complete team
JonC : 11/24/2014 12:44 pm : link
NYG as currently constituted is full of holes, especially the defensive front seven.
No
AcidTest : 11/24/2014 12:45 pm : link
to both. Suh is going to be insanely expensive, and has had character concerns. Iupati will also be expensive, and somebody posted on another thread that he is poor in pass protection. I would also let JPP go, and not extend Eli.
Just think of all the resources
GMANinDC : 11/24/2014 12:47 pm : link
This team has utilized since letting Cofield go. he is still playing strong in DC and the NYG have spent about 40M and maybe two 2nd round picks and other still trying to solidify that position.

It would have been well worth it to have kept him..

That being said, i would go hard after Suh..
They signed Canty instead of Cofield
JonC : 11/24/2014 12:48 pm : link
and Canty played a big role in the 2011 ring addition, I'm still ok with that end result.
letting Cofield and Linval go
JonC : 11/24/2014 12:50 pm : link
were both good examples of the finite cap decisions.

I don't think that's the right way to look at it. Coefield is the better player and so there's no reason to think they wouldn't have won the SB with him plus have been better in subsequent years.
I do miss the "dont taze me bro" sack dance

Stop talking like everything will be fixed next year....
Doomster : 11/24/2014 12:55 pm : link
This could be a 3 year build....hard decisions have to be made, that don't translate into wins, but can create a foundation for the future...
Canty was the better player
JonC : 11/24/2014 12:56 pm : link
but that's splitting hairs, his versatility and pass rush (which BC didn't have) were big factors. Call it a push, at worst.
Spending big time money
crick78 : 11/24/2014 12:57 pm : link
on FA's is such a risk. Big free agent signings don't seem to meet expectations most of the time, then you are stuck with a player or players killing your cap.
JonC
GMANinDC : 11/24/2014 12:58 pm : link
I think Cofield would have made the same impact canty did in 2011..

And like i said, how much resources have they allocated to that positions since that trade-off??..All those picks Ihigh draft picks at that) and FA money could have went to other positions like the OL..

I, too this day, think that was a bad decision..
G
JonC : 11/24/2014 1:00 pm : link
Two very different players and skillsets, BC didn't display much of what Canty did when he was healthy, there's no sense in debating it. I'll take Canty and the ring.

Now, if you want to suggest letting BC go because you had Linval behind him, and then let him go, you have more traction there. Ultimately, it's a cap league and it requires difficult decisions.
If we are going to have around $31 million
halfback20 : 11/24/2014 1:04 pm : link
thats the most I've ever seen the Giants have. If they resign Eli to a new deal, how much could that add to it?

I'm not sure I'd cut Beason right away. Might be best to see what he has next year, but I'm a Beason fan. I think if he could just stay healthy he'd really help this defense.

Suh would be fucking great. Would be even better if we could get JPP to stay, but I don't think giving him big money would be a great idea. He hasn't lived up to expectations at all. His run d is good, but he gets very little pass rush at times.

I think Randall Cobb would be an awesome signing too, considering he knows the offense. Could you imagine Cobb, Cruz and Beckham in an offense together?
Suh immediately fills some serious needs....
Reb8thVA : 11/24/2014 2:02 pm : link
He helps reinvigorate the pass rush and gives you a defensive playmaker, somethink we lack. From there you have Ayers, Suh and Hankins on the DL and rebuild from there.

He also brings toughness and attitude something this defese and team in general desperately needs.

Jon, you really think Suh is going to command $15 mil a year? Maybe you are right, but that is a tough cap for any team to stomach.
Hey Reb
JonC : 11/24/2014 2:08 pm : link
If a team believes Suh is as dominant and destructive as Watt, the Brinks truck will be there. I'd wager a number of teams will pursue him in that price range, and NYG could well be one of them if they begin to shift the DL paradigm and let JPP walk.

Indeed they were. Giants don't pay their starting 1-techniques past their rookie deals.
I think Iupati would be more likely
RB^2 : 11/24/2014 3:27 pm : link
The Giants have multiple holes and a limited number of draft picks. It's better to save the draft picks for high market value positions like DE, DT, WR, etc. and address positions like the interior line or safety in FA.
I'm not a big fan of pursuing Suh
RB^2 : 11/24/2014 3:30 pm : link
At his price, he's more of a final piece of the puzzle. You can't build around him because he'd take up a lot of cap dollars. A defense with Suh and a bunch of also rans is pretty easy to game plan against and wouldn't be as effective as a lot of fans hope.

I'd be surprised if they paid Suh, they typically don't spend big at DT. Canty was a misnomer, or a decision to not pay DTs while running this scheme.
JonC
GMANinDC : 11/24/2014 3:55 pm : link
i won't debate that much but i don't think Canty was the "one piece' that made the ring, but i digress..

i understand cap ramifications but it seems those decisions are becoming an every year waste that is still siphoning from the cap..Were still addressing the same need every two years..

Outside of that, if not getting Suh, are they looking at DE or DT..I would prefer a DE to go with Ayers and Moore..I think the DT position is OK..

Suh is not a guy I'd sign
Go Terps : 11/24/2014 4:00 pm : link
I don't trust a guy when you start to hear things like "he wants to play in NY"...not when you're talking about the kind of money he is likely to command.

Iupati on the other hand I would target. I think one really good player would do wonders for the entire OL.
Canty wasn't remotely the final puzzle piece
JonC : 11/24/2014 6:54 pm : link
but his play, versatility, and leadership played a big role in JPP and the pass rush catching fire.

I don't disagree with the other point you're making. They assign a value to a player and they stick with it. I prefer that instead of handing a good player a bigger contract than his performance deserves.

That said, they need to make better decisions at DT, LB, OL, and so on.

We might need two DEs and at least one DT.

I say it with complete confidence. He's missed more plays in the running and passing game than any FS I remember and we've had some shitbags. He is a HUGE reason this defense is so bad, it's like having 10 people on the field.
