Cris Carter: Tyree's Helmet Catch "Was All Luck"

Exit 172 : 11/24/2014 1:07 pm
Was anyone listening to Mike and Mike this morning? They had on Cris Carter, on his regular weekly spot. After performing verbal fellatio on Carter in introducing him, Mike Greenberg asked Carter if Beckham's catch was the best he'd ever seen. Carter said, "I don't know if I can say it was the best I've seen. But most difficult?..." And I don't recall him really finishing that thought beyond the implication that it may have been the most difficult he'd seen.

He then proceeded to break down all the components of the catch -- vision, body control, etc. And "some luck." He apologized before throwing that in, but he threw it in just the same. There was some luck involved in Beckham's catch.

Then Greenberg said, "When you compare it to David Tyree's helmet catch -- same quarterback, same team...but obviously different circumstances--"

And then Carter interrupted with, "Well, that was all luck."

Greenberg responded, "All luck??? No skill involved at all???"

Carter said nothing.

Mike Golic said, "Well, I never would have been able to make that catch!"

And Carter said, "Well, that's not saying much now, is it."

Anyone else hear that segment?
I actually like Carter so flame away

But Carter prides himself on having the best hands in NFL history. He talks about it all the time. At the same time he's a diva as many WRs are. So I think it's that diva ego coupled with the one thing that he loves more than anything, catching the ball. People will regard Eli-> Tyree as the best play in SB history for many years and I think it drives Carter nuts he isn't part of the conversation on amazing catches, especially in the SB when we knocked him out in 2000 41- 0.
Carter is so fucking annoying
Route 9 in LEH : 11/24/2014 1:11 pm : link
Better yet, any time the Tyree catch gets brought up around Rodney Harrison always takes the opportunity to call it luck. Glad he's still sour over Super Bowl 42.
41-0

Fuck you, Cris

Tyree's play

was fluky, but great. Beckham actually practices these type of catches.
Luck?

Super Bowls played by Cris Carter: 0. That would be zero, goose egg, zip, nil, nada, nothing, zilch.

jealous penis earlier this AM too.

essentially downplayed the Odell catch and pissed on the helmet catch.

yes ofcourse there is luck, but if you don't think there wasn't any skill or desire to out muscle and maintain control of that ball you are a fucking idiotic hater punk.

"CC" is a joke

Wait. Cris Carter can't talk about being an NFL WR because
vibe4giants : 11/24/2014 1:36 pm : link
he never won a SB? And David Tyree did?

And all of you non NFL WRs, who have most definitely never won a SB, are my source for this definitive truth?

Bless.

How is it luck...

if every week they are showing a montage of OBJ making one handed circus catches in warm-ups?

This boils down to: fuck Cris Carter. Always hated him, continue to do so now.
Carter was a great WR

and wish he played for us. HOWEVER, this guy is so jealous (like Marino) and cannot ever give another WR credit if it somehow diminishes any of his achievements.

He said Tyree's helmet catch was all luck, not Beckham's catch last night.
The only way Tyree's catch could seriously be considered "luck"
BlackLight : 11/24/2014 2:53 pm : link
is if the ball had literally hit him in the helmet and stuck there. It didn't. He basically caught it - Harrison swiped it backwards, and Tyree managed to pin it to his helmet and secure it as he was falling, then keep it from hitting the turf.

Honestly, when you consider all the factors for both catches, I'm not sure which was more impressive. OBJ definitely for athleticism, but given that the Super Bowl was on the line, and an All-Pro DB was climbing up Tyree's back, I think that's worth a lot. And does the fact that OBJ practices these types of catches count for him or against him?
I Actually Like Listening to Cris Carter
Bernie : 11/24/2014 2:55 pm : link
and thought he was very complementary of the catch. Everyone other than Giants fans believe the Tyree catch was luck. Who gives a shit, the Giants won the Super Bowl.
And to think
BigBlueCane : 11/24/2014 3:01 pm : link
Carter was almost a Giant.

noun: luck

1. success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions.

Unsurprisingly, Cris Carter is too stupid to know the actual meaning of the term "luck". Had the ball been deflected to Tyree, or something else happened with the ball that was out of his control but was fortuitous in his making the catch, then the catch could be deemed lucky.

There were no deflections, no strokes of fortune. Tyree highpointed the ball, was hit, trapped it against his helmet, and gripped the ball firmly in his hands as he was violently bent backwards. There is nothing resembling luck there.

It appears Cris Carter is as good at understanding the concept of luck as he is being part of championship teams, analyzing football on ESPN, or raising a child to be something other than an enormous moron.

Fuck Cris Carter.

couldn't have said it any better.
There was certainly a good deal of luck with Tyree's catch,
Section331 : 11/24/2014 3:36 pm : link
but to attribute it ALL to luck is really unfair. It was a hell of an effort and showed almost inhuman concentration.

Again, there is no luck involved with Tyree's catch. I guess if you want to say he was lucky that Eli broke those tackles, that's one thing. But the catch itself? Nothing about it was lucky.
There was nothing lucky about either catch.
section125 : 11/24/2014 3:52 pm : link
Tyree's was a bit of skill getting up for a somewhat poorly thrown ball. Getting it in his hands, then being able to pin it to his helmet with one hand til he cleared his hand of Harrison grip; getting the second hand on the ball before he hit the ground, despite continued tight coverage by Harrison. How was that lucky? It wasn't tipped, altered, deflected or touched by anyone but him. That is skill and athletic ability.

Beckham's was pure skill. While being fouled, leaping up and backwards, reaching over his head to catch the ball with one hand (three fingers mind you) without a juggle, bring it cleanly in front of him and secure it before hitting the ground. There was no luck involved, unless not being knocked out of bounds prior to the catch is luck.
I like Carter
Geeman : 11/24/2014 4:30 pm : link
Yeah there was an element of luck involved with Tyree's catch. I have no ssue with that.
The OBJ catch was straight skill. There are several videos of him snatching one handed catches so he does that on a regular, just not quite like last nights grab.

the NFL didn't ban his ass for life in the late 80s before he made a name for himself in Minny with Dennis Green.

Did he say that before shitting all over the best play in NFL history? Luck my ass. Gamblers get lucky. Players play.

vibe4giants : 11/24/2014 4:55 pm : link
reading. But somehow the crystal clear OP has still caused confusion.

And of course there was an element of luck to Tyree's catch. There's also an element of broadcaster's making definitive, absolute statements to what Carter said. Because that's how they most of often get people to react. As this thread illustrates.

When I think of Carter, all I think is....
Fishmanjim57 : 11/24/2014 5:56 pm : link
Ex-Eagle = 0 Super Bowl wins.
He was also on Buddy Ryan's Eagles....how long ago was that?
How many better players and plays have been made in the NFL since he retired?
Chris Carter just sounds like a bitter old guy now. Just let your bitterness go Chris.
IMHO
PlaxPower : 11/24/2014 6:11 pm : link
Tyree's catch was determination & faith
ODB's catch was all skill. You play how you practice.
