NFT: Durant or Davis for the next 10 years?

DanMetroMan : 11/24/2014 2:25 pm

"He’s going to revolutionize the game," one says. "We’ve never seen anything like him," another offers. When asked the time honored question: Who would you take to start a franchise, a third responds, "You mean, besides Anthony Davis?"

I know the knock on him coming out
Jan in DC : 11/24/2014 2:29 pm : link
was whether or not he could develop an offensive game. Guess we know the answer now.

Davis, no question.

I don't even know if that guy has a ceiling.
Durant's 26, Davis is 21

You take Davis for the next 10 years for that reason.

"Next 3 Years: Durant vs. Davis vs. LeBron", now that's a damn tough question. I think I'd go Davis.

I really believe he has GOAT potential. His offensive ceiling might even be higher than his defensive ceiling, which is just ridiculous.

Pelicans head coach Monty Williams told Sam Amick, "Once we figure out how to get him the ball every single night, he could easily go for 40 (points) and 20 (rebounds)

How is getting the ball to him going to nearly double his rebounding?
Davis leads the league in blocks by a mile.

The game against the Spurs in which he was swatting them left and right was reminiscent of Hakeem the Dream.

I love Durant, but I have to go Davis here too. I'm getting the chance to see him live for the first time next Sat Wiz-Pelicans in DC.
I'd go with Davis
David in LA : 11/24/2014 2:50 pm : link
haven't seen someone quite like him before.

Before he is in that convo, he has to do something in the playoffs, in fact he has to MAKE them. He has the talent to do so this year, so if they somehow miss the playoffs, the temptations have to be brought back just a bit.
he's 21
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 11/24/2014 3:56 pm : link
making or missing the playoffs in that ridiculous Western Conference isn't some make-or-break defining moment for him. His team isn't that good and they're probably not going to make the playoffs imo. They're 7-5 right now and likely a 45 win team.

He'll eventually need to make the playoffs and do something to prove himself. But we're at the stage of his career where we can just sit back and enjoy his ascending talent without worrying about career narratives.

He has a chance to be the best player who has ever played the game.
If that Pelicans team which is pretty weak aside from the Brow

Hee still needs to lift his team more

Like Magic, Bird & Kareem did as young players. Put any of those 3 on NO right now in place of Davis and NO easily makes the playoffs.
Its easy to look at the next big thing and ignore

all the warts that may or may not have been exposed. Davis is pure potential right now -- that is, he's very very good but you havent seen any limitations. Playoff basketball, with great coaching and adjustments over a long series are the ONLY way to test a players' mettle. So for the time being, Durant for 5 years. Over 10, you lean strongly towards Davis because of age.

Just to add
Deej : 11/24/2014 5:44 pm : link
look at the Cavs. People have no idea if Kevin Love is a great top 10 player or just a really, really capable stats padder. Is Kyrie Irving a great point guard, or the next Marbury/Steve Francis 20-7 PG who doesnt win?

Playoff basketball is where these questions are answered. Running off great stats in the regular seasons means squat -- especially as an aging western conference conserves its energy for the post season.

This is a nonsense comment. Holiday, Anderson, Asik, and Evans are all good players. There's no second top 25 player there like real contenders have, but there is some real talent in NO.

Ehhh I think they have the talent to do so. Holiday is a legit PG. They have good shooters in Gordon and Anderson. Evans does a little of everything. And Rivers hasnt been awful.

I am not saying this is a make or break year for Davis. Thats silly. However, sooner or later he is going to have beat good teams in the playoffs before we put him in the GOAT conversation. Thats my point.

I am sure when he gets to chicago, he will get a few rings ;)
the answer is davis

Everyone has always loved a.d., but osi was a bit ahead of the curve when it came to just how much. Everyone knew the guy would have a great career, but osi was one of the earliest ive ever seen anywhere talking potential GOAT ceiling with him. And with the way hes playing right now it seems possible. Props to him. Because as obvious as it seems now in hindsight, it wasnt as if everyone was looking at davis as a sure fire generational type guy, even after the title in college. And especially after a relatively disappointing rookie year where he got pushed around

ive seen at least a healthy portion of most of their games, and about my only knock is that i dont think he is quite as great defensively yet as his blk and stl stats would suggest. You cant overlook the volume of his slash plays on that end though, but he still has a little way to go before he is an actual dpoy level impact guy

Nice job lumping 2 of the greatest ball dominant players of all time in with Kareem. No way Kareem makes this team any better in his prime than Davis can. The other two? Well when you are a ball dominant player of course you can make a greater difference immediately.
the level davis is playing on right now
MarshallOnMontana : 11/24/2014 7:00 pm : link
If sustained, would be on the short list of greatest seasons ever. If he cant get the pelicans to the playoffs playing on this level, i dont feel comfortable speaking in absolutes about anyone being a lock to do so in his place, and i mean anyone. This does happen to be the most loaded conference in the history of the sport

So you don't think Kareem deserves mention in an all time top 5 list?
i just got done saying
MarshallOnMontana : 11/24/2014 7:11 pm : link
That his splash stats may overrate his current defensive impact... but with that said........ About 1 out of every 9 offensive possessions against the pelicans defense with davis on the floor end in an anthony davis blocked shot or steal. Thats nuts. For every 9 trips you make down floor, anthony davis is gonna block a shot or force a turnover
