Question on Behre

SLIM : 11/25/2014 10:11 am
Brown has a terrible game against Houston and gets benched for Behre MID-GAME in the 4th quarter. The next week, Demps starts in place of Brown/Behre. Outside of a couple of interceptions, he doesn't look much better than Brown did when he lost his job. Brown has started to get more playing time and Behre outside of the Houston game has barely seen the field on defense. What gives?

2 Things
old man : 11/25/2014 10:16 am : link
1. Can he be WORSE than Hosley?(doubt it)
2. Most BBIers have now pretty much given up on why some guys aren't playing, yet some very much non performers are; oh sweet mysteries of life.
Rookie that is probably not demonstrating in practice
JonC : 11/25/2014 10:17 am : link
that he understands all of his assignments, keys, the backend calls, etc.

If a player isn't demonstrating grasp in practice, he won't play in a game. This is where a veteran often has a leg up, even when he's a below average player, he's earned the coaches' confidence whereas (insert name here/Behre) has not.
Demps and Stevie are below average players
JonC : 11/25/2014 10:18 am : link
but they must be making fewer errors in practice, it's normally that simple.
Hosley
rdt288 : 11/25/2014 10:24 am : link
May be the worst football player I've seen
I can't stand him out there

That and the fact that coaches break down film to see how guys are playing. Just your average Joe Fan doesn't and doesn't really have the same criteria to grade them.
Bromley
jintman : 11/25/2014 11:51 am : link
I guess Bromley isn't demonstrating in practice either. Meanwhile our defense was embarressed ,especially our run defense. Why can't we see what we have for next year. I'm even in favor of giving Nassib a little time to see if he is a reliable backup.

For some reason the always keep rookie DT's in street clothes on game day ...Linval Joseph, Jon Hankins also went through this, I think the last DT to play significant time as a rookie was Cofield. As far as you Nassib comment ,Eli has earned the right to go out everyday and pad his career stats.
so brown and demps
SHO'NUFF : 11/25/2014 12:02 pm : link
have shown an understanding of their assignments?

berhe is a player... a hard hitter... tackles well in the open field like Kenny Phillips used to do... he just can't catch the ball.

I understand practice
SLIM : 11/25/2014 12:18 pm : link
but this is different. He played ahead of Demps at the end of the Texans game (they were both active) and he looked ok out there during that game. The next week, Demps is named the starter.

If it were a practice thing, then Demps should have played ahead of him during the Texans game.
Your perception is he looked ok
JonC : 11/25/2014 12:22 pm : link
but Demps was the starter a week later, so Behre must have failed the exam and/or they changed gears and went with the veteran.

Chances are low that your #4-5 safety will perform better, and coaches play the percentages.

Yep.
One area where I don't give fan evaluations any credence
cosmicj : 11/25/2014 12:26 pm : link
is the Safety position. We have no idea what was called, whether what looked like a missed assignment was a Safety trying to cover up a teammates blunder, or whether the offense just ran a play perfectly designed to expose a weakness. Humility is in order.

BTW, I think the issue with Brown isn't that he sucks but that he hasn't recovered from his injury yet. Hopefully, he will regain his speed for next season.
Stevie's got big holes
JonC : 11/25/2014 12:30 pm : link
He's a guesser/gambler, takes poor angles of pursuit both closing on receivers and coming up on running backs, is frequently out of position and chasing from behind. Demps has the same holes and shuns contact. Awesome.
if you go back and look at the 2012 draft
Gordo : 11/25/2014 12:53 pm : link
there really wasn't a single player drafted after him that i really would take now.. the only guy that sticks out is kelvin benjamin for cleveland, what really stings is TY Hilton was taken only a few picks before hosley..

that draft is looking pretty bad all around, not just with the giants..
So did Jerry and Cordle look good n practice?
oipolloi : 11/25/2014 1:07 pm : link
How about Hosely?
I call bullspit

"That and the fact that coaches break down film to see how guys are playing. Just your average Joe Fan doesn't and doesn't really have the same criteria to grade them. "

I can't say what's up with Behre, but there are plenty of times when your average Joe Fan can grade em. Took me 1 game to see that WHill was a player. 1 Game to know Cruz ought to be in the lineup -- our coaches nearly cut him. Back in the day I screamed for hours at the TV to get JArmstead more playing time while the "pro coaches" sat him. Who except the "pro coaches" didn't know DDeihl had a big fork in his back? I've seen enough of Kiwi to know he sucks and Ayers and even a greenhorn DMoore would be better. Why the coaches trot him out? No idea. Paralysis by analysis is my best guess -- I think coaches over think personnel sometimes.

When it comes to minute shades of gray, I'd agree the fans don't know. But there are times when its in big stinking black and white and, yes us armchair QBs can get it right over the coaches.
Isn't it Berhe?
Randy in CT : 11/25/2014 1:28 pm : link
Berhe.
There are no NFL talent experts on BBI that I know of.
joe48 : 11/25/2014 4:36 pm : link
I enjoy reading BBI comments but do not put much credence in most of it.
I'm willing to concede (although arguable) that rookie Berhe < Demps
TD : 11/25/2014 4:57 pm : link
But even if that is true, it's not by much and Berhe will likely be on the roster next year whereas Demps (hopefully) will not. Gotta give the rookie reps to groom him for next year - regardless of whether he is looked at as starter material. Ditto for the other young guys. Develop them or at least see what you have.
