Please Retire Tom - Do it Now

Rob in Corvallis : 11/25/2014 11:58 am
Take your well earned victory lap . You don't need this anymore and the Giants need to move on.
Why do they need to move on?
TomTom : 11/25/2014 12:03 pm : link
There is a lot of 1st year players this season that have only know TC as their coach for this season. Who are you going to replace him with?
.
kepler20 : 11/25/2014 12:08 pm : link
this team is legitimately 2 drafts away from competing, in which case that means they have a new 3-4 year window.

Is Tom coaching this team for another 5 years? Is that what you guys want??
So you want
Giants : 11/25/2014 12:10 pm : link
TC to move on. Yet your not calling for the GM who is responsible for this OL and DL to move on
I completely agree
NYG07 : 11/25/2014 12:10 pm : link
I know there are a lot of people in the "who are you going to find that is better?" camp but c'mon.

Sometimes teams just need a change. While I think Tom Coughlin has been a great coach at times, his teams consistently underachieve and collapse.

There is no point in holding onto the past. I never thought the Giants would be this weak with Coughlin/Manning. The Browns, Bills, Dolphins, and Rams are all significantly more talented than the Giants.

This team needs a bright young mind to change things up and re-energize this team.
Reese is
Giants : 11/25/2014 12:12 pm : link
the one responsible for the low level of talent on this team
.
winoguy : 11/25/2014 12:14 pm : link
They need to win a game before he can do a victory lap.
Why I said that
Rob in Corvallis : 11/25/2014 12:15 pm : link
the Giants, Bears, Falcons - all teams in decline. We need a reboot, like the Eagles did 2 yrs ago. I would like to see a spread/option attack with Mariota/Prescott running it. The window has closed for the Giants - time to blow it all up or Chip will be owning the division for the next decade.
Thank you Rob
NYG07 : 11/25/2014 12:18 pm : link
I could not have said it any better. 2011 was a last great run by a declining core of great players. The Giants controlled the NFC East for a long time with Coughlin/Manning. It is over.

Time to rebuild.

I don't see it as a total rebuild.
TomTom : 11/25/2014 12:32 pm : link
I really don't. We have a ton of players hurt. Get those hurt players back healthy, we have the QB, just need to get a Oline or two and pass rusher.
.
MOOPS : 11/25/2014 12:35 pm : link
"We're going to do what we have to do, but we're going to do it in an intelligent fashion. "Stability is important, it's one of the reasons we've had some success here. But, there are times when changes have to be made. When we agree on those changes then we make 'em."

Sometimes changes have to be made for the sake of change. Let's see if Mara is ready to move forward from the stability that has pretty obviously become stale.
Hopefully TC Retires
phil fromphilly : 11/25/2014 12:36 pm : link
And Reese is fired. This team needs a complete culture change.

They should then hire a GM / Coach who can work well together and let the new regime decide whether they want to keep Eli or move on to Mariotta (we should be in the ballpark to get him) or hand the reigns to Nassib. A 1st round pick needs to be spent on a left tackle as well as they need to sign 2 more quality lineman and a starting tight end. I would also go after Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin or Andre Johnson to be that big, tall, veteran wideout to compliment ODB jr and Cruz (should he return). I know they are all under contract but it sounds as if 1 or 2 of them won't be back with their clubs next year.

The defense needs to be washed out at the LB position and JPP should only be resigned if they can also attract a guy like Suh to play next to him. We should have the cap room to make it all happen.
Clinging to the Past
Jeffrey : 11/25/2014 12:37 pm : link
It is a shame that so many people cannot evaluate the present or the future without being blinded by the past. It should not be necessary to start a discussion about the team's future with a disclaimer that Coughlin has been a great coach or Eli has been a great QB. Each has been paid well--extraordinarily well. Each has performed well. Each is getting older.

The coach appears to have delegated tremendous responsibility for gameplanning to his coordinators. He has spent most of his press conferences recently trying to explain why a particular offensive play or defensive scheme was run. No matter what the players say, this coach has a losing record over the past three years and there are no signs that it is getting better with a major overhaul in talent. He is 68.

Similarly, Eli is getting older. Never mobile and always prone to inaccuracy, his greatest strength is his composure and ability to handle the pressure cooker that is NY. However, no demeanor is going to compensate for a lack of talent and given the time it takes to acquire talent, even in the best of all worlds, it is not likely tht Eli will have much time left in his career when this rebuild is complete.

Time to move on. It's okay to say that.
Great idea, retire the coach today.
shepherdsam : 11/25/2014 12:37 pm : link

Why would we move on from Eli? Can someone please explain why that is a good move for this franchise. Unless you have a guy that you know is going to succeed to Eli's level, you're probably setting the franchise back another 5 years.
I agree, move on!
Randy in CT : 11/25/2014 12:42 pm : link
Then for a HC we can get...eh...

Wait, who's fucking idea was this??
TomTom
NYG07 : 11/25/2014 12:49 pm : link
We move on from Eli because it gives this team an extra 20 Million to completely re-stock the defense/offensive line.

I still think Eli is a very good QB and is capable of leading a team to a championship. But it is not this team. Why not trade him to Houston and completely rebuild this team?

This is not a 4 year rebuild league anymore. Rookie QBs come in all the time and do well. Whether this team would decide to go with Nassib or a rookie is not my decision. But to me there is no point in paying a QB 20 million when the team around him is garbage.

Also, anyone who thinks Manning will take the "hometown discount" is kidding themselves. If the giants want Manning, it will cost at least 20M per season.

A new coach/GM might want to move on if 1. We wind up in a position to draft Mariotta. OR 2. They think Nassib is ready to roll. AND 3. We can secure a high draft pick or picks for Eli.

Personally I would like to see them keep Eli and draft a stud left tackle as well as buy him a few more starters on the interior.

Coughlin just has not been able to adapt to the new passing nfl
oipolloi : 11/25/2014 12:57 pm : link
My own suspicion is that he believes that it is a trend that will fade and that the running game will still be the cornerstone of the game.

That's why he keeps emphasizing balance and trying to establish the run.

But so far, it has not happened. TC may eventually be proven right, but I think for the five years the trend to passing will continue. And that's why I don't want Coughlin as the coach over this period.

He just is not going to coach that way and Giants will basically waste the last few years of Elis prime.
The "new" passing..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/25/2014 1:02 pm : link
NFL is still frequented by teams who run the ball. Especially teams with above average defenses.

Seattle and Baltimore feature the run. SF features the run. NO has used Ingram more than ever and Indy has run the ball more than usual. Eddie Lacy will get 1,000 yards.

This idea that the run is being abandoned is mostly a myth. what is happening is that the pass is being used more to set up the run.
Unbelievable
rbsp7 : 11/25/2014 1:02 pm : link
Wow, you guys are still saying this.

The Giants are losing because of talent, has nothing to do with TC. This isn't some amazingly talented roster that Tom is destroying, I saw a young team that played really hard and lost to a better team. The Cowboys are one of the league's best teams right now and the Giants are decimated by injuries and yet they were in it til the end.

One losing season in 10 years and you guys are flipping out, maybe you should root for the Patriots if you can't handle the New York Giants.

Bullshit. You get a an Olinemen or two and a pass rusher, plus all the injured players, healthy we can compete right now. Getting ride of Eli right now would be the worst decision this franchise would ever make.

Great so you have 20 million to restock Offensive line and Defensive line, but then you have no QB. Makes no sense, you build around the QB not the other way around.
Let's See...Where to Begin...
clatterbuck : 11/25/2014 1:10 pm : link
1. Fire Coughlin: Who is the replacement and what system will be installed? Do we fire McAdoo as well and institute yet another offense?

2. Rookie qbs come in and do well: Sometimes and sometimes they crash and burn. Want to mortgage the future on a new qb when a two-time SB MVP, franchise qb already is in house?

3. Institute a spread offense: And that system has won exactly how many NFL championships?

4. Coughlin is old school and a running game is passe: See Seattle Seahawks, 2013 season.
TC should stay. Two things need to be done
Some Fan : 11/25/2014 1:17 pm : link
(1) Get rid of Ross and whoever is responsible for FAs so we hopefully can improve our abysmal talent level. These guys have NOT done a bangup job considering we are among the lowest 2-3 teams in terms of our OL and TE / LB talent level. Moreover, I also believe we are among the bottom three teams in terms of talent depth at many positions. These guys need to improve their game immediately but I think letting them go is the answer.

(2) TC needs to get better coordinators. Obviously, Fewell is done. I prefer the next defensive coordinator be someone that established himself as a good DC. McCadoo gets at least another year to implement his offense. Maybe we need the ST coordinator to go too but I am not as down on him as others are.
I will say it again and again TomTom
NYG07 : 11/25/2014 1:18 pm : link
How do you build a team around Manning when he takes up a 6th of the teams cap space?

There is not a discount for a new Manning Contract. So do we continue to live with a below average team around a championship qb? Do you want to continue to see Manning get zero help from his team and watch the worst ranked defense in the NFL get run over?

It is time to rebuild. I will not sugar coat it. It is not like this team is going to draft a star LT in the 1st round and magically this team will win 10 games next year.

This is a terrible roster with terrible coaching. We can do better and as fans we should not accept the front office standing by and hoping Coughlin will turn this around.

Finally, who says this team will have no QB? The Giants have a talented young QB in Nassib and are looking at a top 5-10 draft pick. I am not saying dump Manning with no plan. My point is it is time to move on. Did anyone think Nick Foles would be able to lead the Eagles?

How did they win a super bowl in 2011 when he was taking up just as much cap?

Les in TO : 11/25/2014 1:21 pm : link
arepart of the problem, this is an undisciplined team with some strategic game planning missteps and a defensive that plays conservatively/borderline scared football; a "little giants" offensive line is also a big part of the problem, probably the biggest at the moment; a front seven that doesn't scare anyone is also a significant part of the problem; concentrated injuries at DB, RB and WR year after year have also been a problem.

I don't think he's a sacred cow, the Giants have fired coaches with a track record of success before (Reeves and Fassel).
My only worry is that TC is too old for the 2-3, maybe 4 years window

NYG07 : 11/25/2014 1:28 pm : link
2011 was a run by a team that got hot with a declining championship core of players.

Tuck became the Tuck of 2008 for that run. We still had Osi playing well and JPP was incredible that year. Nicks and Cruz were arguably the best WR tandem in the league. The offensive line while on the decline was still giving Eli time to throw. Webster was a top 5 corner that year.

A lot went right for the Giants to go on that run. Like I will continue to say, stop living in the past.

Not living in the past. The point is you're not that far off from contending when you have the QB in house. Do you know what are cap situation will be in the offseason? No you have no idea, because you don't know what players will and will not be on the team. Teams go from worst to first all the time. We have the QB, we can get a couple more pieces with a good draft and couple key free agents. The Eagles went 5-11 to 10-6.

You are right FMIC. Our problem is that we are an awful running team who obstinately tries to establish the run first week after week - to the point where our playcalling is telegraphed. Our running game would probably improve if we established the pass first and then started running when opposing teams adjust to stop our passing game.

Our willful refusal to do this is reason #1 why it's time for TC to go.

The whole "who are you going to get to replace him" crap is funny stuff. Of course he can be replaced. Nobody is immune to being replaced.

Coughlin sure as hell doesn't know a bad defense when he sees it, because he's had one for years. He sure as hell doesn't know a bad special teams unit when he sees one as he's had one for years.
