"One source with knowledge of the process (but not the same source who was on the money — pun lame but intended — when providing info about the 2014 cap) tells PFT that the cap could spike to $145 million in 2015 and a whopping $160 million in 2016."

Plenty of room to improve the Giants. Of course thats also plenty of room for the 31 other teams, but still if the Giants spend it wisely, this could be a very quick turnaround.

Makes the idea of singing Suh and Iupati...
Sonic Youth : 11/25/2014 1:25 pm : link
that was kicked around yesterday a little more feasible. Suh will still be getting top dollar, but if we could pull it off and sign both of then, it would go a LONG way towards fixing our weaknesses across the line of scrimmage.

The two of them would improve this team massively.

I wrote this in another thread, but if we can somehow retain JPP AND Suh, we've essentially made our line respectable. JPP, Suh, Hankins, and Moore/Ayers/Draft/FA, along with Bromley and one of the afformentioned ends as a back up will give us a very solid start. Coupled with the talent in our secondary (if it can somehow stay healthy), and we have a team that can rush the passer and cover. Will Hill would sure as fuck be nice there.

But Iupati is the one who would have a MASSIVE impact.

Beatty - Iupati - Richburg - Schwartz - Pugh. THAT is a line you can win with.

Either way, we need a starting caliber guard and some smart depth along the O-line.
Whether they have the cap room or not, FA is no way to build a team.

We've seen it here, and we've seen it elsewhere, most notably in Washington (countless times) and Philly (2011)
The cap doesn't even have to rise
Giants2012 : 11/25/2014 1:29 pm : link
The Giants cap number is extremely friendly for 2016 regardless.

The benefits of poor drafts is there are few to resign.

Ideally, when you can afford it, you fill needs through FA & stock for the future through the draft. Thats not to say you shouldnt try give rookies playing time, specially in this era, but you cant rely on rookie no matter how high they're drafted. They dont always work out.

Giants definitely need a few good FA pick ups if they have any hope to turn it around.

Done right you sure can help build your team. Plax, Pierce, Mackenzie built the foundation for a very good team. This year - like no other - demands some quick fixes along the offensive line. Fix the line and we win 11 games next year.
In reality the cap rising
steve in ky : 11/25/2014 1:42 pm : link
probably doesn't equate to anything other than the players earning higher salaries. Sure with the timing of it some teams may benefit more than others based on their immediate given situations when the increase occurs but over all the ability to field a better team to compete doesn't really improve. It is all relative.
Micko and Glorydayz, I agree that adding a key piece or some depth
Victor in CT : 11/25/2014 1:49 pm : link
through FA can be effective and is necessary in this era. What I meant was that you can't build or make up for poor drafts with the wholesale importing of FAs from other teams. You wind up with a team of mercenaries with no understanding of the teams philosophy. And I really think it contributed to the ridiculous amounts of "communications breakdowns" that we see from the Giants.

I think the Giants need to sign an OL & a DL for obvious reason, but they also need a WR opposite OBJ in case Cruz isnt the same, or needs more time. WR doesnt have to be a pro bowler, but someone experienced, reliable and can take advantage of OBJ being doubled.

I'd like to believe they'd look for a good starting caliber LB, but based on their track record they'd rather spend the money shoring up the DL.

or did I read it here in another thread that we'll be at least 20mil under without this new cap#????

Victor, why not? if we wisely add an "IMPACT" free agent or two combined with a good draft, I was going to post decent, but I'm tired of decent drafts, we could make progress in turning this shithole of a season around. We've done it in the past.

I don't know if anyone has noticed
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/25/2014 2:01 pm : link
but the SF offensive line has not been good. Everyone was beating the Alex Boone drum and demanding a trade, and he's been disappointing as hell.

Iupati's best days seem past him too.

As of right now, without JPP and Rolle Giants cap is just under $120m. That's with Eli playing out the final year of the contract as is, and guys like Kiwi ($7.5m cap, $4.8m in savings if cut), Beason ($7.4m cap, $3.5m in savings if cut), Walton ($3.1m cap, $2.5m in savings if cut) .

Giants can create A LOT of room. They can have a very busy and make an impact in the off season if the chose to... not like they have a choice really.

Those numbers are from overthecap...

No apology necessary. I do the same thing sometimes.

I'm on board for those cuts. I'm a fan and grateful of Beason's but the guy can't stay healthy, so long Kiwi! and Walton well he's nothing but a Veteran Backup and we can't pay him that much to be a backup.

Wanted Iupati in the draft
JonC : 11/25/2014 2:29 pm : link
not sure his best days aren't behind him now, he's frequently dinged too. Huge, huge man and they tend to not age well as effective football players.

This team has a ton of holes, they're not going to rebuild it spending a ton of UFA dollars. It's going to take another draft or two, some bargain hunting, and perhaps a few well-picked bigger UFAs.
Giants should consider
Simms11 : 11/25/2014 3:17 pm : link
signing a veteran receiver and Safety as well, since we do not know what VCS status is going into next year and depth at receiver is pitiful. Additionally, I don't think they bring back Rolle, unless it's a very cap friendly deal and we do not known what we have in cooper Taylor or National Behre either. We need someone that can roam and provide nice deep coverage and act as a real safety, great concept, huh?!
