Over The Cap.com: Looking at the Decisions Facing the Giants

Damon : 11/25/2014 1:16 pm
Don't know if German but Over the Cap has an interesting piece...

It’s easy to find excuses for the 3-8 record the Giants currently have. The team does enough at times to make them think that they are just a few breaks away from turning their season around and being a playoff competitor. It is very easy to look back at the seasons results and say the Giants could have beaten Arizona, San Francisco, and Dallas (possibly twice). Change the results of those games and 3-8 quickly turns to 6-5 or 7-4 in the blink of an eye.

Philly, Seattle and the Colts. Is the goal to be mediocre or to compete against the best the league has to offer?
covers the options
richinpa : 11/25/2014 1:30 pm : link
I think he covers the entire options available pretty well and implications

Really forgot about going lame duck into next year and doing nothing with Eli until then ...(distraction?)

I would prefer an "all in" with Eli or "cut bait" with him approach. You are either tying the franchise to his success or hitting the rewire switch.

Either way, that decision is the biggest for the franchise and will shape it for the next 3-5 years.

Prefer to let JPP walk as we shouldn't pay 8-10m a year for average. Rolle will not get alot of $$ elsewhere so hope we can get him on the cheap for 2-3M year

Eli is staying.
BillT : 11/25/2014 1:39 pm : link
That's a no brainer. They could maybe wait a year until they resign him that's not impossible but Eli will be the QB for the next half dozen years either way.
Pretty
AcidTest : 11/25/2014 1:45 pm : link
much endorses what I've been saying, so not surprisingly I agree with his conclusion that we just stay the course for now. No extension for Eli. Just pay him the $17M next year, and punt the decision about what to do with him until after next season. You could even postpone it another year by using the franchise tag on him. That gives the Giants one maybe two years to develop Nassib, and also avoids a major use of their salary cap. Even if Coughlin comes back, he won't be here much longer. Extending Eli could handicap the next coach by saddling him with a QB he doesn't want.
You never get rid of a franchise QB
oipolloi : 11/25/2014 1:45 pm : link
Unless you have another one in the wings, such as Luck, Rogers, Steve Young, or Rivers.

And even with Rivers 's success, SD should have kept Brees.

.....
Micko : 11/25/2014 1:50 pm : link
I don't agree w/ not re-structuring Eli. You either plan to keep him for the remainder of his career or you get rid of him now. There's too much money invested in him to not go about this with certainty. I will say this - if the team has confidence in Nassib then this just might be the time to move on from Eli. The extra cap space could help fix a lot of holes around Nassib. Granted, how confident can you be at this point? Personally, if Eli is willing to play ball on the contract then let's roll with Eli.
Sticky this

Maybe for another year or two but eventually you've gotta play your future franchise QB. can't be sitting on the bench forever.
I Would Be Pissed
Bernie : 11/25/2014 2:02 pm : link
if they moved on from Eli. We have seen what this offense can be if protected. Have to believe with a couple of O-Line changes, next year should be that much better. Given where they are likely to be picking, not unreasonable to think the top tackle in the draft will be available. I would also evaluate going after Iupati in free agency.

The real issue is on defense - especially the front 7. I have to believe the following players will all be gone: Kiwanuka, Jenkins, Patterson, Herzlich, Williams, Paysinger, Demps, Brown, Hosley. We shall see if they bring Beason back or cut their losses. I would resign Rolle and Thurmond to team friendly deals.

That should give the team some room to make moves to address the D-Line. Obviously the biggest question is JPP. I believe he is not worth the money he will look for. If he will take something like $8m per over 5 years, then fine. Much rather go after Suh and let Moore and Ayers be your starters on the outside.

To make a run at both Iupati and Suh will require Eli to sign a new deal and free up cap space as getting both may be unrealistic.

It's a no brainer, as another poster said.
Britt in VA : 11/25/2014 2:05 pm : link
Those that think the Giants will let Eli Manning play until Free Agency without an extension are not dealing in reality.

The ONLY way Eli doesn't get extended is catostrophic injury.

Otherwise, it's a stone cold mortal lock that he's getting extended, and it's likely going to be this offseason.
Giants would be stupid
Kevin(formerly Tiki4Six) : 11/25/2014 2:05 pm : link
to pay Eli 17 in a lame duck year... extend him or try to move him...

we've already had 3 bad seasons in a row...
It's never going to happen...
Jacobs27 : 11/25/2014 2:06 pm : link
but if the Giants traded Eli for let's stay a 1st in 2015 and a 2nd in 2016 they'd have around $45 million in cap space and a bunch of premium draft picks over the next two years. You could really rebuild this team very quickly with that kind of cap space and premium picks.

That's especially true if they gave Nassib a shot and didn't have to burn a #1 pick on a QB. It's super risky because if Nassib sucks it's all for naught...but if he's decent then you might just have a very good team. If he's more than decent you could easily have a super bowl contender.

It's the type of high risk/high reward gamble Mara would never make so it's all academic.
I say give
Bleedin Blue : 11/25/2014 2:06 pm : link
Eli a long extension with low money per year and guaranteed, and rebuild around him with a combination of youth and vets mixed in. If we rebuild the O-Line with young players, the line will be around for Eli's replacement. JMHO
The writer's assessment is spot-on.
NorwoodWideRight : 11/25/2014 2:08 pm : link
Now the question is: which path will the organization take? There's no easy answer.
I highly doubt
BP in NJ : 11/25/2014 2:36 pm : link
Eli wants to play anywhere else. I expect a mutually beneficial extension for both parties, where Eli gets compensated handsomley, and the Giants don't have to break the bank to do so. Hopefully in the 12-15 per range.

The Giants have treated Eli extremely well over the years in terms of Salary--I'd be willing to bet he returns the favor by taking a slight pay cut. Something like 3 years 40-50 million i'd sign up for.
Good article
mrvax : 11/25/2014 2:36 pm : link
I've already made my Eli decision. I'm thinking "A bird in hand is better than 2 in the bush" and I'm extending Eli for the most cap-friendly deal he will accept.

I'll mae JPP a fair offer based on his stats vs. other DE's and I'm pretty sure he'll walk.

Rolle is taking a cut or he will walk too. I want the team younger if possible.

I'd get at least 1 good offensive guard, the best F/A possible to help with the running game.

Come draft time, I'm going best play maker available, best Olineman available then round it out with the best defensive guys I can get at any & all positions with an eye toward linebackers.

In summary, 2015 would bring us the injured starters back, Eli back, 2 new offensive lineman, a good group of young defenders (including Moore & Bromley.) You play the kids from day one if possible and take your lumps early, and look to improve during the year.

Oh and

you can close this thread now. Thanks.
I have thought about this and I basically agree with
MikeN in Ottawa : 11/25/2014 2:59 pm : link
what was pointed out in the article in terms of staying the course. I would like to see what improvement comes from Richburg playing his natural position and having an off season in the weight, strength program.

I agree about JPP...he has done nothing that makes me say we need to sign this guy. Unless he is willing to sign a team friendly short term deal, a kind of bridge deal, I would offer him what WE want to pay him. If he rejects it, let him move somewhere else.

I believe we need to go draft big time with OL/DL...see how the other chips play out in terms of Beason, Cruz etc.
JPP does not deserve a big contract from the Giants, Kiwi needs to go and we need to see Moore and others on a regular basis...see what they can do.

Then bring in some second tier vets to provide experience and depth as we did back in 2006, 2007 with McQuarters, Madison and others.

Same with Eli...let him play out his deal...see what transpires and then make that decision after 2015. I wish we could get rid of Beatty...

Eli is having one of his best three seasons in just about every category that matters except wins, despite having no running game, a shit offensive line, and a 32nd ranked defense.
I disagree with the notion that
fkap : 11/25/2014 3:10 pm : link
extending Eli is a done deal. It may very well be a likely probability, but it's not writ in stone.

Let's face it, he's not carrying the team. He's most likely the best option (outside a miraculous rise of Nassib, who is NOT a franchise QB sitting on the bench - he's a guy with possibilities, but no real reason to count him as anything special).

Let's face it part 2: extending means mortgaging the future. that's what extension is. convert his 17-20 mil salary into signing bonus, which then gets amortized. it's a one year deferment, then he goes right back to being expensive, and expensive to get rid of. Is there any indication whatsoever that he's not satisfied here and won't resign for the same deal he can get now? Don't do it. let him play his final year, then resign him if he can show he can be productive. dumb, dumber, and dumberer to resign him to top dollars for his declining years. But, I'm willing to listen if he's willing to knock some zeros off the paycheck.

Another disagreement. that dealing with JPP. the article insinuates that resigning JPP means a win now attitude that goes hand in hand with resigning Eli. We've already seen first hand that a win now attitude is a recipe for not winning now. If it makes sense to resign JPP for the long haul, do so. Don't do it because it may be Eli's last chance.
Good article, but...
Emil : 11/25/2014 3:21 pm : link
I disagree with his approach, the courses of action are too mutually exclusive. You can stay the course and still do components of add young talent and sign FAs. He lays out the main arguments very well, but I don't think his conclusion is where the Giants are going to go.

The Giants will extend Eli. He will be a Giant until he retires, for two reasons.
1. He is proving he has plenty of football left and is playing at a high level (minus one game) this season.
2. He wants to be here, and no where else. We should all be thankful and the Giants will sign him to a deal that works for the franchise and the player.

Sure its not a "done deal" but it is the 90% probability column. I also think Coughlin gets an extension. His age is a legitimate question, but much like Eli, the Giants don't see a better option available and he gives 110% every day of the week. The team hasn't quit on him, many of the players just aren't that good. Coughlin signs an extension, with the idea that MacAdoo takes over in 2016/2017.

The front office knows it can't just stand pat. They OL needs to be rebuilt and I think FA is where they will do it. The Defense will get a combination of draft picks and FA. I Rolle and JPP want the world Reese will say goodbye. The team doesn't need to break the bank on Suh or Murray, but needs to maximize the FA dollars they have to fix the OL, DL, LBs, and find another weapon or two for Eli. The NFL is a young league, and young players are playing more and more. You are probably not going to strike the lottery twice and get a player like Beckham, but there are plenty of young FAs in 2015 and the Giants will be looking for hungry players who want to make a name for themselves.

I don't think that is lost on the front office at all.
Build young around
mikeygiants : 11/25/2014 4:52 pm : link
Manning purely because I'd rather watch young aggressive play as the team moves into a new era. That means the end of Rolle, JPP, Kiwi, ???

If I was Mara I'd make the a very un-Giant move and make Reese the sacrificial goat. I'm not sure he has what it takes to build through the draft.
THIS
Coughlin's Rules : 11/25/2014 5:54 pm : link
whoever wrote it bravo.

Only a fool would think about getting rid of Eli Manning especially with a full blown star in Beckham coming of age. Look at what Manning does with that one star receiver on the roster capable of opening the playbook. Plaxico SB 42. Hakeem SB 46. Eli has three rings written all over him and that third ring has Odell Beckham written all over it. Give Eli a decent line and watch.

Three of the greatest catches in NFL history have spun off of Eli Manning’s hand. Giants fans really don’t deserve this, but if their GM can fix that OLINE and Dline, they’re getting that fifth ring.

100 million extension should blow up BBI.
Coughlin rules.
Rjanyg : 11/25/2014 8:21 pm : link
Nails it. Eli with Beckham for the next 4 years is a great combo. The front office needs to hit the nail on the head next year in the draft and FA.

Part of me thinks Reese needs think long and hard about the JPP situation. Extending Eli is a no brainer IMO. This team can be turned around in an off season. I like the past 2 drafts a lot. I think they have some true contributors in both classes and one more solid class would solidify this team.

Adding a pass rusher or re- signing JPP is the key to next year. If they sign JPP they need to move him to LDE. If not they need to draft a DE high or find another option.
FACT: Eli will be extended and paid very well.
drkenneth : 11/25/2014 9:55 pm : link
Some here will just need to accept that fact. Eli will retire Giant, as he should.

I think TC comes back.

Fewell is toast (obviously). Find a young, aggressive DC, with the idea that he or McAdoo be TCs successor (hopefully). Quinn is gone as well. Just promote Izzo.

Go hard after Iupati.

Draft best player #1 (WR/OT/DE). The off-season is about Eli.

Coughlin's Rules.
