So I have some neck and upper back issues. I wanted to see if anyone here has similar issues/pain and what mattress works best for them, i.e. - plush, firm, medium, pillow top and best brand they've tried. thanks in advance
Make sure the mattress has a firm base whether you go plush or pillow top for the top layer. Personally, for neck and upper back issues its your pillows that will impact things the most. I recommend at least some type of memory foam pillow and that should help.
In the showroom they had a four poster bed with decorative wrought iron attached to the top of the posts leading to the middle of the bed, all attached by a wrought iron ring.
It wasn't a bed, it was an adult playpen.
While my wife and I were deciding on which bed to purchase I called the salesmen over. I told him that I would agree to buy the matress set we were looking at on one conduction.
He asked me what the condition was. I pointed over to the four poster bed and I told him that i would buy the bed if he promised to call me the minute he sold that bed. When he asked me why,I told him that i just wanted to see the women that decided that was the bed for her. He took one look at a me and cracked up. My wife was not pleased, but I thought it was pretty funny.
Sadly, he never called me and the bed was gone when I went back there a year later.
do you sleep in? Many years ago I had similar problems as I was a stomach sleeper. My PT explained how bad it was for my cervical spine and I had to re- train myself to be a side/back sleeper. Took a few nights of tossing and turning but never a problem again.
I always though I needed a firm mattress, but I've been very comfortable with on a fairly low setting. Plus I can always make it firmer or softer if I want to. We splurged and got the adjustable base, so I sleep with my head and feet slightly raised. It has eliminated any pressure points I had with regular mattresses and I don't wake up in the middle of the night with pain from that.
If you have neck issues, a pillow might be more important. I love the contoured foam pillows that have it raised at the neck and then the head is a bit lower. That keeps your neck/head in the correct position.
I have had some back issues. Herniated disc and every morning when I would get up to go to the gym, it hurt so badly that I could barely get my socks on.
So, I did A LOT of research about mattresses. Here is what I learned...
Spring mattresses are BAD since they are constantly pushing back at you creating pressure points. So, your muscles are working a bit while you sleep and this is causing a lot of the pain.
Memory foam mattresses relieve the pressure that is caused by spring mattresses. Allows you to get a better night's sleep. I purchased the temperpedic with the pillow top. Basically, their most expensive bed at that time. The very first morning I woke up without any pain. It was the first time in years. Been sleeping soundly ever since.
Now, here is the other thing. I used to wake up like everyone else with my hair all fucked up. With this new mattress, my hair is exactly as it was when I fell asleep because I no longer move at all when I sleep. My body is not uncomfortable and there is no need to adjust my postion. wake up in the same spot that I am in when I fall asleep.
The cost is significant. However, you spend 1/3 of your life on that mattress. Don't go cheap. I never understood why people would spend $40k on a car but then $400 on a mattress. Expect to spend $3k-$4k for a good night sleep for the next 10-20 years.
is the heat retention. When our old mattress was going, we bought a foam cover to try to make it more comfortable. It made us so hot, it was miserable.
I know that many foam mattresses say they have 'cool' technology, but if you get very uncomfortable if your bed is too warm, I'd think twice about foam.

Here's a heads-up on a seperate issue regarding your purchase of a mattress.
Don't buy your mattress at Sleepys!
