8. Carolina Panthers: Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
It's possible that the Panthers could double up on receivers in the 2015 NFL Draft. They really have nothing beyond Kelvin Benjamin. If the top tackles are off the board, Carolina could take Amari Cooper to give them a pair of lethal receivers. Cooper is the best player available, as he is on the same level as A.J. Green and Julio Jones.
and they pass on him i think i will throw my remote...i dont care how much OL is need you dont pass on a talent like Cooper especially Sheriff who is a RT...if he was a bookend LT and was going to start the next 10-12 years then fine but WR is a hole as well
Cooper, Beckham , Cruz and your set for the next 10 years at WR..
I have to admit, to get another offensively play maker is hard to pass up. It all depends on what we do to the OL in FA. But Cooper and OBJ as our WRs would be great. I would not re-sign RR, who has 2 years left. He is one WR I can't stand on this team. We don't know how Cruz will do back, and if he can ever be the same. So give me another play maker.
Agreed. Scherff would have to be a stud to pass on Cooper. I know we need quality OL, but if Cooper is in the same league as Julio Jones and AJ Green, you have to grab him.
but I actually would have to seriously consider Hundley if he's there in 2. I love Eli - but I think Hundley could be a stud with a bit more polish & development.
Other guys I'd prefer in 2 are Perryman and Ogbuhei.

To be honest. I really think we need to build in the trenches, but i don't want to settle for a mediocre guy because of his position because we really need it. If cooper is there, i would snatch like like OBJ

I have been saying this from the start...if there is a player there on the OL or DL that is worth that draft position then i am ok with it...i just dont want the Giants to reach for a guy because he is OL or DL like some want the Giants to do..
If the BPA is OL then draft OL, If the BPA is WR draft the WR...This team has holes every where including WR...
And in this draft class i dont see the great OL in the top 7....I think Sheriff and Peat are nice players i just dont think they are game changers on the OL in my opinion...
Cooper? Doubt it. Would rather have La'el Collins if going OL.
(2)Edwards over Perryman would be a close call.
(3) Mauldin is 6'4" and 245 lbs. A 3-4 OLB and probably a good one. Hard to take him for NYG over Cam Thomas,Anthony Harris,Ty Montgomery or Kurt Drummond.
If Schwartz can perform at a high level for the rest of the year, the urgent need for an OL is tempered to a degree and if there are no top notch OTs in this draft, that changes how this could go. If Cooper is the 2nd coming of Jones or Green as a WR, he's going to grade out way higher than any offensive linemen in this draft. Plus, after giving Romo all that time in the pocket at the end of the game last week, I think the biggest need here is a pass rusher but I don't think there are any great ones in this draft either.
but I think it would be a mistake to go WR in round 1 for two years in a row. Think about it... a guy like Calvin Johnson is incredible - but he's never won a SuperBowl. At least to some extent, a WR can only be as good as the QB and offensive line let him be. So is a 2nd #1 WR the best use of that kind of draft resource?
If he's there an everyone else is a reach, you trade down.
Of course, that's me - as JonC said, they Giants would probably run to pick him.
All I know is that everyone thought the Cowboys would reach for a "weapon" player last year (Manziel) and they picked OL instead... and they're having a pretty good year.
In this draft in particular, early projections are the OL talent in the top 10 won't be there.
If Cooper is your BPA, draft him.
Remember, UFA comes before the draft, use it to shore up your urgent needs. If that doesn't come to fruition, you may well find a better OL value in the 2-3 range of this draft.
no. His rationale for Scherff is that we are getting rid of Beatty, which would be very surprising. That means we need a guard not a tackle, especially if Schwartz can play RT, and Pugh can move inside and replace Jerry.
If the draft Cooper they have to go OL in the 2nd or 3rd
It certainly hasn't helped the Falcons at all. Christ look at all the first round 'stud' WR's that have been drafted recently and how those teams have fared.
It's national arena football league where if a DB looks at WR the wrong way, he gets flagged. You don't need premium talent at WR, just serviceable and effective talent. Spend the picks elsewhere. Preferably along the lines or up the middle on defense.
Cooper is going to be rated as a higher WR than OBJ was coming out of college. Um.... sign me up.
And this nonsense that big time WRs arent winning SBs or whatever the Megatron reference was.
Jerry Rice won a few rings, so did Irving. Harrison and Holt arent too shabby either. Reed got to the dance, as did Owens, Moss, among other great WRs.
suggesting the WR is overrated, when the early consensus is the opposite, and your position of "draft OL or bust" is well-known, BBC.
Here is the bottom line, you draft the player you feel is the best player that fits your system, and if he fills a need it's all the better.
In today's NFL, an elite WR is worth more than a very good RT, if the OTs in this crop project as it appears they will. You're ok drafting a very good RT over an elite WR? Over an elite DE? You can score very good OL in non-premium rounds, and it's a better use of resources. Get your premium playmakers early.
If there's an elite LT in the crop? Then I'd be fine picking him over the WR if you think they're virtually the same in terms of grade.
Oh that's right, we didn't. I think people are overvaluing that Cowboy game and the fact that Dallas does not have a quality pass rusher on the team.
And again, look at the rules NOW at how WR's are treated. You might have needed HOF WR's in years past.
Nowadays you don't.
His impact was that we were good enough to beat dallas. You think Peyton is sitting there saying.... well I already have Demaryius Thomas, maybe we should trade Julius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders are bring in some scrubs because thats what we need in the NFL.
The more weapons you have, the better you are on offense. The better you are on offense, the less tiem your defense sees the field.
If you recall people spent Reese's entire tenure saying BPA and value and other catch-phrases to make themselves seem and feel smarter.
All the while, the rules and dynamics of the league have fundamentally changed. A WR is NOT more valuable then a RT, Period. Look at how much Vegas weights them in the betting lines.
This league is about 1. Getting a QB. 2. Protecting him. 3. Getting him some help. 4 Stopping the other guy's QB.
For some idiotic reason, people keep wanting to skip Step 2 here. And they do so by overrating or overvaluing the talent on the team.
You say a RT isn't that big a deal. I look at the Giants team and think both tackles should be upgraded if allowable and they're still looking at upgrading one of the guard positions after that IF Weston settles in at Center.
I just do it by sticking to my draft board and trying to maximize the impact of picks. There's no reason to force a pick, I can find requisite OL talent in rounds 2-3 in this very draft.
I'm not passing on a young great WR prospect to draft a RT that may or may not be better than Pugh, and that's the risk you're suggesting is acceptable.
when it's been proven fairly recently in this league, you don't need to spend the resources there, gifted young talent or not.
Reese likes to stick to his board as most here have said, that's led to picks like Sintim and Allen, both of whom sucked.
At some point, you have to re-evaluate how you grade these players in comparison to how valuable they are on the field. WR's, like RB's, are not nearly as valuable as they were even 3 years ago.
The Giants won SB's when they could protect Eli and get to the other guy.
When they can't, it doesn't matter who they have playing WR.
lol ok. You are right. Nicks, Cruz had a little to do with us getting too and winning a SB. It was the OL that ranked LAST in the NFl in hurries. And last in the NFL in rushing.
I've addressed those points, we have a fundamental disagreement
Didn't like many of them then or now, especially DRC.
Positionally he hit on some that were needed and some he blew off (namely DT and OG), and I agree his choices need to improve a great deal, as well as drafting in rounds 3 and later.
best thing that can happen is if Mariota falls to our pick, which will create a bidding war for teams who want to move up. Even if he's gone, I'd auction the pick anyway. Somebody is going to want to move up into the top ten. Trade down at least once, if not twice. Reese and Ross have botched innumerable draft picks. If you're going to keep them, try and increase their chances by giving them more choices.
Use the rest of the season to see if Schwartz can play tackle. If so, hope that Pugh can kick inside to guard and replace Jerry next year. Move Richburg to center. Keep Beatty. Get a mauling guard like A.J. Cann from South Carolina after a trade down. Bring Walton, Mosley, Herman, and Gaines to camp. Jettison everyone else.
On D, I like Malcolm Brown, the DT from Texas. Better option than signing the incredibly expensive Suh. Let JPP go if he wants to much. Go with Ayers, Moore, Wynn, and a draft pick, maybe Eli Harold of UVA.
Draft Perryman, and at safety, hopefully either Harris of UVA, or Eskridge of Syracuse.
When our interior O-Line has been garbage for 3 years. IMO I wouldn't draft a OT with the first pick because G is the biggest need. Put a good G next to Beatty and Pugh and watch them become better players. Also don't understand why people think Pugh would be better inside. That being said, if Cooper is available at our pick, you grab him. In a way, having 2 legit threats on the outside helps your O-Line and run game by taking 1 guy out of the box. Plus looking at McAdoo, spreading the field and masking O-Line deficiencies seems par for a GB man. Just too much to overcome this year
Wouldn't be upset with that scenario. I just don't see Scherff as a left tackle in the NFL. Athletic corner rushers kill him. He may be best suited for guard.
If when we pick there are several players we ranked as equal, then we should take the olineman. It wouldn't bother me if we drafted 2. We need the depth there the way ours drop.
Not a fan, he's mentally inconsistent which shows up in his play, historically. Avoids contact, he'll try to make up for mistakes by grabbing the jersey, he's got a of AA but often relies too heavily upon it. The inconsistent results at $7M per are bothersome.

Yes lets pass on a potential great receiver and reach for OL...

And if they draft Schreif, I'd go Ty Montgomery in the 3rd.
What the hell is wrong with people.
OL >> WR no matter how 'talented' he maybe. If the QB is knocked out of the game, WR is worthless.
And pass on Edwards,he's a dud waiting to happen.
BBCane might get his wish this year tho, RT might wind up the BPA when NYG picks unless a DE or WR is a late riser.
It certainly hasn't helped the Falcons at all. Christ look at all the first round 'stud' WR's that have been drafted recently and how those teams have fared.

Yep, it really hurt them to make the SB didnt it? What was their record last year, BBC?

DE in round 3 as a pass rusher lol. Send Moore to the bench or another developmental project.
Any offensive linemen? Of yeah, cit Beatty and bring in another LT. So what about Guard or will Richburg play out of position again.
This roster needs starters.
I'd like to keep DRC and Prince together for a while.
