Refs reviewing plays - OBJ catch

JohnB : 11/26/2014 8:03 pm
Thinking about OBJ's catch, what if he stepped out of bounds before the catch and it was missed by the on-the-field refs but caught on replay, can it be ruled no TD? In that same case, would the PI stand or would that be wiped out because he stepped out of bounds?

I really don't know so I ask. Thanks in advance.
I think because

it was a scoring play it was subject to review no matter what and if he had stepped out of bounds it would not have been a TD.
If he steps out of bounds then

he cannot be the first to catch the ball or catch it at all. Therefore, we would have accepted the penalty. No TD.
Yes, if OBJ stepped out of bounds and touched it first

it would have been illegal touching and no TD; there would have been offsetting penalties I think because Carr committed PI

Yes, this is correct.
actually not so sure

about that - I think it would depend if OBJ was forced out of bounds.

if he was forced out of bounds then he just needs to re-establish himself inbounds before catching the ball. If he went out on his own then this is definitely true (off-setting penalty).

good call on that. He does need to re-establish himself though.

are the penalties offsetting though?
GIANTSr01 : 11/26/2014 8:36 pm : link
or is PI in a higher "class"?

I know if you have a personal foul on team A and team B committed holding, the penalties don't offset. The PF is applied.

To answer the original question, any time a play is reviewed, the ENTIRE play can be reviewed, not just one specific aspect. And since all scoring plays are automatically reviewed, the entire scoring play can always be reviewed.
If he stepped out of bounds

and therefore was not eligible to catch the ball, how could there be pass interference?

I am not "pissing on the best part of a losing parade"

Just trying to completely understand how great that catch was since he worked hard to stay in the field of play. If he had stepped out (which he was VERY close to), it would have been ruled "no catch" and it would have passed into history without a second thought. As it stands, it might be one of the greatest in NFL history.

We marveled at the catch itself, we marveled that it was done in the face of PI and now I marvel at the fact that he did it while tip-toeing the sidelines where the smallest misstep would mean it was all for not.
If he stepped out of bounds on his own before the PI

It would have been a penalty against us, and the PI would have been reversed (asssuming the refs make the right call).

If we was forced out and fails to reestablish himself before making the catch, its incomplete but PI applies.

If he was forced out and does reestablish himself, TD is good and PI is declined.

I think that coves the scenario.
