NFT: Mounting a tv above brick fireplace

GMEN46 : 11/27/2014 8:59 pm
I am buying a 60 inch tv and need to mount it on brick above a fireplace. This is not a thread anout why I shoudnt have a tv above fireplace, believe Me I don't want it either, but I do not have any other options in my living room it's theonly place to put it. We don't use the fireplace so I am not worried about the heat, and yes I know it's not the nicest looking thing to do. My question is what is a good mount to use for mounting to birck? Also should I mount to the mortar or into the brick? I have heard mixed reviews about this? Any advice would be appreciated thanks.
Can't comment on the brick part of it.

But to be honest with you our TV above the fireplace works great in the room. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having it up there either. I'm laying down watching it now and it's easy as anything else - nobody minded being above there

But you cannot mount a tv above a fireplace.

Having to look up, above your normal field of vision damages your eyes and eyesight in the long term, and leads to severe eye fatigue in the short term.

Unless you standup the entire time while your watching the television?

The tv is actually supposed slightly below your field of vision so that you glance down at it.
ours is above the fireplace

For 3 years and so far nobody has died yet.

If the bricks are secure I would mount into the brick with good masonry anchors and a slim mount-try to keep the weight and as close to the wall as possible.

and I've gone to lots of movie theaters

That had the screen above my line of sight.

You have to be an imbecile to mount a TV above a fireplace.

I knew a guy who did this once, and we would all stand up to watch the Giants games.
I don't know about the eye sight

but if you used the fireplace often I would be worried about what damage the heat might do to the television over time.
People look up at TV screens pretty much regularly

Wow this guy Haha

With the eye sight and severe fatigue wow

Anyway I don't recommend putting it over fireplace because it really won't be comfortable at all to watch TV but you won't die from it like this imbecile is hinting at.

I put a TV in a basement in brick wall and it was very very tough I'd hire someone.. I can put a TV on a wall with ease but going through brick isn't easy

I went out and got huge screws that were about 12 inches and drilling was tough and the screw didn't really screw in kinda just pushed in and it sat in there.. It didn't feel right but once we put the TV on the Mount I realized it wasn't going anywhere those screws were in there a foot

But again be careful to not drill too big of a hole because then the screw will be loose and wobble in the brick and it won't sit right

Did you drill directly into the brick itself? When mounting something to brick it is best to drill and screw into the mortar/cement between the bricks.
I drilled into wall
CruzShip52 : 11/27/2014 11:55 pm : link
Then put anchors in the holes along with the screws still it didn't feel as snug as wood studs
My 55" TV has been mounted above

my gas fireplace for almost 5 years now. Everyone who comes here and watches it loves it. Most of the seating is located about 16-20 feet from the screen so I think this helps and I mounted the TV so it leans a few inches (about 4-5) out from the wall at the top so it faces down slightly. The grandchildren can play on the floor and walk in front of the TV without impairing your view which is also a nice plus when watching Giants games! We have had zero issues with the TV from the heat or anything else. I find it very relaxing to be able to rest my head on the back of the chair and still see the TV clearly. Having your TV above the fireplace gets a big thumbs up from me!
By the way, my fireplace is made from stone and I left

an opening in the stonework with studs to attached the TV mounting bracket to and run the wiring, so I really can't offer you any advice about attaching it to the brick which was your original question. However, a contractor once told me when attaching shutters to my house to run the screws into the mortar and not the brick as it was more porous and would tend to crumble and not hold the screws well if info this helps.

Well I'm going on 5 years with my TV mounted on my fire place so I'm not so sure I agree with this. It's called laying down on the couch.

similar story- went straight into the brick, popped in some anchors and screwed the mount in. 4+ years, no issues, just delightful.
They did something similar ...

... on Ask This Old House recently; a large mirror, so not as heavy as a TV.
