The meltdown in Ninerland

Fort Mill Mike : 11/28/2014 10:22 am
We may suck even worse than San Fran., but at least our front office is making a spectacle of its self ( Steve Tisch's cringe-worthy PDOA notwithstanding because I dont think he knew he was in camera). Their GM's daughter being a classless moron on Twitter, the owner apologizing in Twitter.

C'mon, man!

The Giants don't have much to show for themselves on the field these past two seasons but at least we have the talented, classy Mara girls. Hopefully no one in our front office says or does anything stupid the next 5 weeks.

Oh, good grief - this is what it's reduced to?

How long until pitchers and catchers report?

JPP and Rolle. In the meantime, I think the bigger problem in Frisco is how awful Kaep is looking. He can't seem to throw or run this year.

Was thinking that last night too. Two years ago he looked like the next breakout QB. I wonder if his choke job near the end of that Super Bowl when he had 4 downs around the green zone to get back in the game rattled his confidence irreparably.
Please excuse all the typos

I shouldn't post from my phone.
49ers had a consistent 3-4 year run of success

Difficult to sustain much longer than that, and the Harbaugh situation looms large over a team that's had a ton of injuries that wrecked their defense.

I think you're seeing a mentally tired group.
I'm too lazy to look...

There is constant chatter that Kaep is more about refining his image as a top QB than actually becoming, you know, a top QB.

HC change or not

Iupati and others might want out of there, like Suh did in Detroit last offseason.

They lost 2 All Pro linebackers for the season. They lost a huge chunk of their secondary in free agency. And somehow their defense is playing well.

It's their QB. He cannot make NFL level reads. Pressure or perceived pressure gets him immediately off balance. And he doesn't have the wheels to break out and off like he did a few years ago.
And we lost to this team..
Dave in Hoboken : 11/28/2014 11:15 am : link
at home, no less. We are truly the bottom of the barrel, or damn close to it.
SF is still a good team

They have 10-11 win talent, they're just trending down instead of building towards a peak.

Kaep gets love from the media but everytime I watch him play I just dont see it. He's fast and has a strong arm but it doesn't or hasnt translated on the field consistently.
The 49ers are pretty good, any predictions of their demise is
PatersonPlank : 11/28/2014 11:23 am : link
over stated. Fact is G.B. and Seattle are by far the two best teams in the NFC. They will be fine. The fact that the Giants almost beat them, and the Cowboys, at home tells you we are better than BBI says. We are a 7-9, 8-8 team. Lose tot he good guys and beat the bad ones. Hopefully next year our D gets better talent, and our O is better with Cruz back, and the OL with a year more experience.
It's makes you respect even more
mrvax : 11/28/2014 11:23 am : link
how good the Patriots have been pretty much year after year. I know the AFC East is stinky but they beat other teams just as well.
SF is still a better team than the Giants are.
arcarsenal : 11/28/2014 11:25 am : link
But they got so close 3 years in a row and could never seal the deal. It's extremely difficult to be within striking distance like they've been in just two consecutive years let alone three. Inevitably your talent pool starts to thin out whether it be via injuries, players going elsewhere, etc.

It just seemed evident that their window wasn't going to stay wide open forever and now it's starting to fall shut.

You have to be able to capitalize when you get as close as they did. It's hard to keep getting back.

is a problem, but the biggest problem is the offensive line. It's been atrocious for them, particularly in pass protection

And I told him that outside of Beckham and Eli his whole team is better at every offensive position.

On defense, they are better at every position outside of maybe DRC and Rolle. I really like Reid on their D though.

Do you guys see any other positions where we have a player clearly better than they do?

Their OL is not dominating n the run game like they used to
oipolloi : 11/28/2014 12:45 pm : link
Gore is also finally showing his age.

That has placed more pressure on CK to make plays and he has been exposed. He has not shown the ability to pass from the pocket. He takes his eyes off the receivers to look at the rush. In a sense, his running skills are working against his development as a passer.

Harbaugh realizes this kid is never going to be any good. That's why there is speculation that he is going to bolt.

I agree with your post on most of the things. I disagree with a couple of things. One, if Harbaugh leaves it isn't going to be because of Kaep. Wasn't it Harbaugh that chose Kaep over Smith? Two, the OL hasn't been as effective running the ball because they pass so much. The easiest way to take the "nasty" out of an OL is to constantly ask them to play in retreat mode by pass blocking. I feel if they just emphasize the run game more then their OL will start playing better in that aspect of the game. There is no reason for their OL to not be dominant in the run game.
Staying on top in the NFL is a tough, tough proposition
NYG82 : 11/28/2014 1:01 pm : link
That team has already reached their peak. Conference Championship loss, Super Bowl loss, Conference Championship loss. It is all downhill from here for the 49ers. That 3 year run will be the peak of the Harbaugh era in San Fran and while it was impressive and possibly a touch disappointing for niner fans it's over.

See y'all in about 15 years when you become title worthy again and you re-appear from your hibernation.

The best 49er's team in the past three years - was the one that played us in the playoffs in 2012 - and the Giants bested them -- matched them strength for strength and the 9er's blinked --- they never recovered from the Giants knocking them out --- you want an example of how great a coach Coughlin is - look to that game, because he out coached Harbaugh plain and simple -- Kapernick is a flash in the pan player and the book is out on him - he's reached his ceiling -- It was a hugely bad football move getting rid of Smith - Smith was perfect for the strength of the game Harbaugh coaches

But that's Harbaugh's responsibility because he made the decision to switch from Alex Smith to Kaepernick

their past few strong years, but yesterday they played a team much better and peaking at the right time for the playoffs. Two weeks of defensive dominance.

Be happy Niners of the past few years, but the division is slipping away from you.

That's your reality.
Fangio's movement is likely tied to Harbaugh

the 49ers will have a real offense again, one way or the other (Harbaugh in or out). They just gotta make sure it's not at the expense of defense. Even in this era of scoring, it's nice to see a team carried by defense.

This down year is probably good for rebuilding purposes and to look at long time Niner players with an objective eye instead of an emotional one (Gore, Vernon Davis, Iupati, Crabtree).

I'd like to see a new offensive coordinator and a real play made for AP. Gore used to be able to run effectively against 9 in the box, but no longer. Pre-Harbaugh the dude was sick and would have easily carried one of these Harbaugh teams to a Lombardi (even with Alex Smith). He's the only other RB in NFL history to have two 78+ yard TDs in one game (Barry Sanders is the other). His best NFL season was 1695 yards at over 5.0 YPC, back when the team had nobody on it (2006). Now he needs help to be effective, but can still be good in a secondary role.

Would be nice to get someone who can dominate from the running back position. Carlos Hyde has potential but is only really good from the read option right now. If he had Gore's vision he'd be awesome with his speed and power, but that ability takes time.

I personally think it's easier to fix the team around Kap than get a new QB. He needs help but so do about 28 other NFL QBs in this league.

The Niners made a mistake in thinking Kaep was ready to lead a 4 WR offense. They must embrace their power O identity, and just get a person who knows how to execute it better (would love Norv Turner back on the team).

Harbaugh can still coach but his offense is obsolete. Roman is to SF as Fewell is to NYG.

Both of these guys remaining on their respective teams will cause a lot of anger in the offseason. That's about the only thing I know with any real certainty.
